Stopped by Parkside last night and was told Feris is going to expand/merge into the space and intends to add an outdoor stage for live music.
Headed up to Birmingham tomorrow for the weekend and to go to the Alabama/UT game. I think we're either picking up from or going to Ollie Irene tomorrow night. Never been there before.
Haven’t had to do this in forever but what’s the best Jefferson courthouse/county location to go get car license plate issues handled?
I always go to the one on 31 in Hoover because it's closest to my house. I can usually get in an out within half an hour. One Two
We ended up going to Fig and sitting outside on the back deck for dinner Friday night. Was pretty good but not life changing.
I think the fam wanted to go somewhere casual. At first they wanted to pick up and I guilted them into going out to dinner by saying I'm never in town and eating in was lame.
I wish Hop City would carry more Monday Night /Westbrook/other awesome breweries. They obviously have access to it. I know they are trying to support local places. They tend to have tons of inferior beers from local breweries. I loaded up on Trim Tab again, got some Duclaw stuff from Baltimore, some Westbrook, and they had a bunch of stuff from Pipeworks out of Chicago so bought some of that, and some Omnipollo. Went by Trim Tab and asked for stuff that was brewery release only. The back outside area was packed on Friday afternoon.
Looking at taking a quick weekend trip with the wife for our anniversary sometime in the next month or so. We’ve just spent a small fortune on a new septic tank and field lines so we aren’t looking for something extravagant. Any recs on a 4-6 hour drive. Thinking Asheville, Chattanooga or something.
We went to Old Edwards just before the pandemic and it was amazing. Looked to do a potential babymoon this February and they were booked for almost a year out.
Was going to be my recommendation. Best time of year to go too. Couple of smaller hotels, Park on Main and 200 Main that are nice and a fraction of Old Edward’s. Lots of good restaurants nearby, but drive 20 minutes to Canyon Kitchen for dinner, best view food and cocktails in the area.
“Not looking for anything extravagant.” Bham thread: “Old Edwards Inn!” One of the nicest hotels and mountain resorts in the country All joking aside, I love it as well. We also did a “baby moon” there. Lots of nice rentals in Cashiers too. North Georgia like Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Dahlonega, etc. are always fun as well.
Check out some of the Airbnbs around Rising Fawn. Slightly BFE but you get some good views and can find some cheaper options.
Better hikes, better food, better beer, better city. I’m not a spa guy, but my wife likes the Grove Park Inn enough (though she says Old Edwards is clearly superior.) Highlands is just kinda stuffy and can’t hold a candle to the food/drink game of Asheville. I also like the little bit of grit there.
Not really sure Asheville to Highlands is an apples to apples comparison. Different places for different things.
To each his own, but I don't really think that Asheville v. Highlands is a fair comparison. Asheville is a legit city of 100k people and Highlands is a mountain town of like 1500 full time residents.
Highlands rules in the summer, too, because you can drive 5 hours from Birmingham and have the daily high temperatures drop 25 degrees.
What do you like to do in Highlands? Honestly asking, because we go every now and then and I’ve never had a great time (unless it was a wedding.) Not playing golf or doing the spa probably hurts me here.
Yeah, if you don't play golf and have no interest in the spa, your options are primarily day drinking and short hikes. Lady Tegg likes the shops and art galleries, too.
where's some fine dining i can plan on getting into on a friday night? i've got a gorgeous dress that most the restaurants around town aren't worthy of and i didn't quite anticipate the importance of a reservation
Cashiers > Highlands. Way more relaxed vibe plus even better food IYAM and more casual spots to drink and eat. But you can also find plenty of stuffiness if that's your thing. Can't hardly avoid it in Highlands. The access to forests and hikes is also better in Cashiers.
sry to be invasive but clicked on your past posts cause i don't check other threads very often and just wanted to say congrats. as someone with a trans sibling--one who left bham in part cause she was uncomfortable with the lack of community (granted this was like 2017)--i hope that you don't have to deal with too much shit i don't have much to add on the fine dining front--kinda tough to know on a friday. i feel like shu shop, even though it's not really "fine dining," is solid for getting some top notch food and has dressiness all over the map (in a good way)
Any new food worth trying around bham? Saw the back forty burger talk a while back...definitely gonna try that
