yeah that match was incredible. really bizarre too, the deal with the microphone, the hot umpire, the ball girl running into Sandgren. watching it late at night made it seem even more weird than normal. They just said on the broadcast Federer wasn't on the practice schedule today. Seems like an outside shot he beats Djokovic
Searched online and couldn't find any logical explanation. Why is it that in tennis seeding the players aren't just matched up on paper to be 1/8, 2/7, 3/6, 4/5? The 1 seed playing the tournaments 5 seed in the quarters seems pretty stupid.
Here is the way it breaks down per side of the bracket. Here are the top 16 players and you can see how they balance it out. Not really sure how else you slice this up with such a large field of players? The first round is 80 singles matches alone. 1 seed side: 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 15, 16 2 seed side: 3, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13,14
feels weird given how his career is gone, and he is clearly the elder statesman (at 26) of the younger players, but I never would have thought Thiem would break through first. But it looks like he has the best shot. He is playing great
Why not just divide it based on traditional seeding matchups? One side of 1, 16, 4, 13, 8, 9, etc. There seems to be no advantage to being the 1 seed versus the 2 seed, which strikes me as fundamentally wrong.
I think they tried to change it up a little bit just to make sure the matchups were not the same forever. So for instance the 1 & 2 seeds flip for 3 & 4 seeds. Then the 3 & 4 flip for the 5 & 6 seeds for the quarters while the 1 & 2 flip for the 7 & 8 seeds. Then 1-8 are set, they flip for the 9-16 seeds.
I’m trying to understand what you’re saying but remember it was a quarterfinal. They’re going to meet eventually it’s either the 5 against the 1 or 2 seed eventually. I guess I’m just having a hard time understanding why it’s better that he plays the 2 seed as opposed to the one. If you are doing what you propose you are still putting these into quadrants or halves, for balance logically the 5 will meet the 1 if there is even distribution. And it would be at the exact same spot unless you intentionally skipped any sort of logical placement. I’m sure Rafa would take Thiem 7 days a week at the quarters, over Rafa or Djokovic, coming into the tournament. Just like I think either of the latter would take Thiem at that spot as well.
Hmmm I think we’re not understanding each other. Any 1 seed in a tournament should be rewarded with the easiest path to the final on paper. That means playing the 8 seed in the quarters. It should just mirror traditional NCAA hoops seeding. It makes zero sense to have the 1 seed play the 5 seed in the quarters because that’s the hardest possible seed for the 1 seed. Before the tourney started, Nadal should’ve had to play the 8 seed in the quarters with Thiem and the 4 seed in Nadal’s half of the semis.
Not that it matters and I don’t think it’s some point of pride or anything but Laver compared to Ashe cracks me up. It’s like a minor league stadium. That said I’d take a match in Laver over Ashe 10/10 days a week. It’s just the pre match spectacle that gets me.
One of my favorite things is Kyrgios, native Australian, hates playing on Laver and asks to play on Melbourne Arena for as long as he can in the tournament. Prefers the Aussie crowd that can get into Melbourne Arena with grounds passes as opposed to the crowd he gets on Laver.
well US isn’t in January but just saying I’d take the intimacy over the mega structure. Either one your leaving with swamp ass. But I will say Ashe is so massive it’s literally intimidating walking in the freaking thing. I’d watch any match on TV over going there.
I caught that interview the other night, love it. Said he always requests it but not in his hands, man of the dingos.
Even FILA has the budget to do it and pretty sure they give them multiple ones but Kenin probably didn't pack a lot of them.
They all do it, you think this is horrible try watching some doubles. Looks like a poor high school that couldn’t afford reversible jerseys.
Kenin in the visor helps a bit I think the only people I see wearing FILA gear are international students from Asia and tennis players
