I'm going to use this as a running list to reference at the end of the year. I'm horrible at remembering what came out in the first quarter by the end of the year.
my end of the year list is gonna have like six of my very favorite bands on it. Thanks to those bands for releasing sweet new tunes during this difficult year
I still need to give the new Khruangbin album a good listen. I had it playing while I was at the driving range a couple weeks ago, but didn't focus on it much. Listening to that new The Beths now, and this shit rocks.
I try to keep my year end list to 30-35 albums and it’s going to be tough. Tons of good music has been the only bright spot of this dumpster fire of a year.
Hit me with some of your best from the first half. You may have already posted, so you can just quote that post if so.
This covers multiple genres, so your mileage vary slightly. Here’s what I’ve liked so far: Futurebirds - Teamwork Tre Burt - Caught It From the Rye Spanish Love Songs - Brave Faces Everyone Beach Bunny - Honeymoon Best Coast - Always Tomorrow Soccer Mommy - Color Theory American Aquarium - Lamentations Ratboys - Printers Devil Momma - Two of Me Empty Country - S/T Swamp Dogg - Sorry You Couldn’t Make It Jaime Wyatt - Neon Cross Waxahatchee - Saint Cloud Katie Malco - Failures Pure X - S/T Ohmme - Fantasize Your Ghost Lilly Hiatt - Walking Proof Gum Country - Somewhere Blushh - RIP Apathy Caitlyn Smith - Supernova Country Westerns - S/T HAIM - Women in Music PT 3 Zach Bryan - Elisabeth The Beths - Jump Rope Gazers The Dead Tongues - Transmigration Blues Will Hoge - Tiny Little Movies Khruangin - Mordechai Gladie - Safe Sins Diet Cig - Do You Wonder About Me
I need more of the rock/guitar. Seems like a lot of low tempo stuff lately. MMJ will hold me over for a while.
Check out the Pure X album if you haven't It's different from say MMJ, but it has some really nice guitar work in it.
Just read on COS that MMJ have another album nearly done and ready for release. I assume we would get that when they are cleared to tour.
mmj record is good and it was a good listen and later this weekend I’ll post some new stuffs that I like but work is busy and I don’t have the energy for more internet gbr
post more and don't take it personally when people don't respond, like everything else in this thread, the hit percentage will likely be low for me, but there's a vacuum itt for the kind of stuff you bring to the table
Sure thing. Always happy to share. Sad truth is, I don't hear as much new music as I used to (or would like to, really), especially now. Still though, I can pop in more than I have. Here are a couple email lists I recommend, too: Green Noise Records - retail store that used to be run by the dude behind Dirtnap records. It has since changed hands, but they still put out a great mailer. Dirtnap is an awesome label to dig through the back catalog also for those who like pop-punk especially. Marked Men, Exploding Hearts, etc. Midheaven Mail-order - I think these guys are out of San Francisco and they cover a bit broader spectrum of punk sub genres. They include solid write ups of new releases and reissued each week. Definitely worth following. Terminal Boredom is another forum worth checking out. I suspect the hit rate would be even lower than my recommendations for most here, but there are some absolute gems I would never have heard otherwise.
officially under a week till the new Protomartyr album comes out this new MMJ really doesn't move the needle much. Maybe it'll grow on me. So you gotta go all the way back to 2008 for what I consider to be a good MMJ album. That's sad
Yeah I agree, I’ll take it. Seems like it’s any other B-side album I’ve listened to from a band I like. Less energy and I’d bet they choose their material based on wanting to play it live. Favorite of the lot is run it. I also looked last night to verify that we are indeed on course for the 17th. Can’t wait.
I'll post my list even though it's just derivations of other lists posted: Tennis Andy Shauf Khruanginbin/Leon Bridges Beach Bunny Futurebirds Best Coast STRFKR Phoebe Bridgers MMJ Checking into The Beths, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Stephen Malkmus. Was a little meh on Soccer Mommy and Car Seat Headrest compared to past releases. Pearl Jam was a big meh as was Real Estate. Tame Impala went off the list once I heard the STRFKR album. Beach Bunny is my #1 so far.
the new CSH has not grown on me like I thought it would I think it has three really solid tracks in Can't Cool Me Down, Martin and There Must Be More Than Blood. But the rest is filler not even in the same ball park as Teens of Style or Teens of Denial
Did not know an album came out, will listen thank you. Also Fleet Foxes fans, Robin Pecknold supposedly has some story on Instagram regarding a new song coming out. I do not have IG so can't verify.
it may only be on Bandcamp right now I've seen tons of musicians expressing gratitude for Bandcamp lately. Seems like they've really tried to help put money in the pockets of artists during this pandemic
I'm afraid to listen to the Cloud Nothings album, haven't enjoyed their releases in a long time Was pretty cool driving home the other day hearing Wasted Days come on our local station though, took a little detour to extend the drive
bandcamp I think has always been pretty good about that, but they have definitely stepped up the last few months to do more and also helped direct funds toward different social causes
Protomartyr put out a very brief trailer for a visual album in advance of Friday's release of Ultimate Success Today https://diymag.com/2020/07/15/watch...imate-success-today-visual-album-15-july-2020 Spoiler and I guess Whitney are releasing a covers album? https://www.stereogum.com/2091553/whitney-hammond-song-the-roches-cover/music/
In a year when a number of previous favorites have underwhelmed for my tastes, I'm a bit apprehensive with these expectations I have for new Protomartyr, but everything I've heard so far including that little 30 second teaser has set a pretty high bar
I'd say my tastes align pretty closely with Shiggityshwo and I agree with him. That said, we tend to like heavier music than what this thread generally has. It's not bad, just that not a ton of heavy shit has dropped this year.
Wasn't even making a comment on the overall output of this year, just the two acts that produced my favorite albums from '17 & '18 respectively both dropped pretty massive duds this year for my tastes, and I wanted to make a silly post about trying to not get my hopes up from an act that also produced one of my favorite albums in recent years.
first two Protomartyr albums are so freaking amazing. The kinds of albums I would like to listen to on my death bed, in case anyone here is caring for me in my final days The Agent Intellect was awesome and Relatives in Descent is awesome now that I don't associate it so much with a period of severe depression this album is going to be somewhere between awesome and amazing. And it might even be so freaking amazing. I'm excited! https://www.nme.com/music-interview...-that-actually-this-is-our-last-album-2704678
Algiers and US Girls I know the U.S. Girls album was pretty popular with this thread, but, solely in my opinion, after the two very good singles open things up it just screeches to a halt with a bunch of tracks that feel underdeveloped like they're trying to build to something but never get there, with a couple of decent songs interspersed. The closing track also leaves a really bad taste in my mouth, it's like one of those pointless recordings you used to be able to find as "secret song" on cds back in the day.
I added it to my 2020 playlist but don't believe I've heard it yet. I need to delete a lot of albums from this year or just make a more rock/guitar playlist. I use the playlist when running and it just sucks to hear some low tempo crap.
