FYI, it's on apollo now. With the exception of one real head scratcher (Rocks Gears...) it is an excellent follow up album. I have a feeling the head scratcher may be interesting live though.

I guess I care? Pitchfork, Stereogum, et. al. are one of my primary sources of discovering new music and I find the insight they, and other sources of music criticism, offer into music I like amplifies my general experience and makes learning about new music more enjoyable. So I am interested to know what seems to be their issue with the new Grizzly Bear music, as they seem to be overtly critical to a band they've provided interesting context to in the past.

I look at pitchfork these days as just an information aggregator type of website. theyve broadened their musical scope in the last few years and are more or less just an 'edgy' rolling stone. I still like reading some reviews and its a decent place for info on some things, but I cant remember the last time they tipped me onto something new.

Yeah, I guess I'm not too cool admit I go to the site. They had a great Sunday review on Fugazi's third album a couple weeks ago and did good justice to Hammersmith Odeon '75 the week before. I got over my "PITCHFORK SUX WHO READS THAT" faze like junior year of college.

i read it too. no shame. i definitely like to make fun of it, but they've led me to a lot of good music over the years and i tend to really like their retrospective lists of different eras and what not.

How much do indie bands get paid if their songs are in movies or tv shows?

I agree with everything here. Both new Grizzly Bear songs are great. LCD Soundsystem and HAIM songs suck like everything they do. I'll never get the love for either of those bands.

Hello yes I got too drunk to figure out why Live Nation wouldn't let me complete my purchase last night. So I bought tickets this morning. Beach House/Fleet Foxes and then Sturgill at fucking Red Rocks is going to be a ridiculous two days.

Going to that same show at the Hollywood Bowl in September, super pumped.

I love these double bills at big venues. Have tickets to Fleet Foxes / Beach House, The National / Local Natives, Belle & Sebastian / Spoon, and Phoenix / Mac DeMarco at the Bowl this summer

Just got back from Hangout Fest.

Saw these bands/artists for 1st time

    Local Natives
    Phoenix
    Mac Demarco
    Chance The Rapper
    Mumford and Sons

I predict that Local Natives will be headlining festivals in next 5 years. They were just incredible.

Local Natives are in a little bit of an odd situation right now. I feel the same way about them - saw them twice last year, thought they would explode and take a major "step up" at festivals for 2017, thought they'd take a step up to Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes level popularity, etc.

But it just hasn't really happened that way. In 2013, they were billed 2nd on the 4th line on the Coachella poster, in 2017, they were 1st on the 4th line; essentially flat. Their album release show I went to at the Greek Theater in LA last fall had about ~20% open capacity; my buddy went to their album release show for their second record in 2013 or 2014 and said it sold out (Greek around 6k person venue). They're getting so-so billing at a lot of other festivals and lukewarm critical reception to their last record.

Just a bizarre case because I feel they are incredible live, just kind of stuck on a plateau right now and unless they change their sound a bit, may never get bigger.

They basically put out a depressed death album. I think that killed their momentum more than anything else. I didn't enjoy their last album even a little bit. It literally brought me down.

Edit Hummingbird. Very much enjoy the most recent album.

Yeah, sadly I think they have a pretty easy path to increased popularity if they put out a pop indie-folk album ala Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men, Mumford, etc. It would be my least favorite potential route of theirs, but I think if they purely wanted to get as popular as they can, that's how they'd do it. Other than that, I think they'll continue just being solid mid-card at festivals and playing medium sized venues.

Loved the first and most recent album. Literally can't make it through that one without feeling shitty. I don't feel like it's a step back musically, just not enjoyable for me.
