Sweet! Now you can grab beers with me in Charleston and explain this whole travel deal/CC thing to me like I'm a 5 year old! #SilverLinings #Blessed
I'll drive my ass to New York to catch that plane to Thailand if necessary. I just really don't want to
I know this pretty lame for you world travelers but my wife is taking me to a Bulls/Bears game for my 40th this weekend in Chicago. Riding the Lake shore limited to Chicago from Toledo, Bulls game Friday, check out the city Saturday, and Bears game Sunday. Any advice on must sees Saturday (we’re gojng to stay in the loop).
I’ve always thought about taking the California zympher across the U.S. but now I’m not so sure. I’m actually planning to drive cross country this summer with the kids like I did when I was younger (my dad lives in San Diego). I thought if the train was a nice ride the kids would like it better, probably going to stick with driving as the plan.
I've done the train from Ann arbor to winter park Colorado and back a couple of times as a kid. It was fucking awesome
Imo it's all about the food.... Try to grab reservations at Girl and the Goat, because that is apparently the best though I've never had it (because I can never get in). By best I mean, that it is or was the #1 restaurant in the world per trip advisor. That said, the actual best restaurant in Chicago is named Alinea, and it's like top 25 in the world per food critics. (I've never been, because I've never wanted to pay that kind of money. Alinea is very expensive). If that's an issue, try GT Fish and Oyster or Publican. Both of those places are incredible, in the loop, and affordable. (Girl and the Goat is also affordable). The best burger in the world (per bon appetite magazine) is at a place called Au Cheval. If you wanted to go see Blue Man Group, they have a theatre and perform every weekend in Lincoln Park. Buddy Guy's Legends is one of the most famous jazz clubs in the world. Second City if you wanted to see comedy. Many, many famous comedians started there: Bill Murray, John Candy, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Steve Carell, and Stephen Colbert to name a few. During the day.... Walk around. Tons of good sports bars to watch some football as well.
My buddy just flew them from San Diego to Paris. I know they cancelled his flight last minute and it was supposed to be direct and he had to be rerouted through like Minneapolis or Chicago. Said food was fine, seats weren't particularly comfortable. Said it was worth the money he saved though. I think the big risk you take is that the flights are more likely to be delayed/canceled and its not like they can just put you on the next flight a couple hours later like if you are on a bigger airline because they'll only have like 1 flight every day or every other day and have no partners.
It was the next day, and instead of having a direct flight to Paris, he had to go through Minneapolis or Chicago. He still said it was worth the money saved, because it was like half the price of flying with any other carrier and no one else had direct flights. Kinda just a roll with the punches type thing. If everything is on time its a great value.
Right. I was just curious how long he had to wait since I imagine there was a whole plane full of people they needed to accommodate just like him
heading to Mexico City in a bit. have a compressed 5-day schedule, but wanted to fit in San Miguel de Allende. have any of you guys been? we'd only get 1.5 days there based on our schedule, and it's about a 3 hour drive there. looking to see if it's worth it.
Nothing to add but please report back. Mexico City is high on my list, think I'm going to head there or Tulum for a long weekend in early 2018.
Munich, Prague and Krakow leave tomorrow come back 12/13. I felt so prepared for the last couple weeks and now I think I'm under prepared but i'm not sure why
God I am jealous, I love Krakow with all of my heart. Doner Kebobs there are the best I've had in Europe, Istanbul included.
Milk bar isn't a specific place, it's what they call the old commie cafeterias. I don't remember which specific one I went to, but they are all pretty good. Just make sure it doesn't look like fast food (yes, there are milk bar style fast food places there), and they have bigos (best, most delicious shit there). If you check those 2 boxes, you'll probably be in good shape. I'm sure Lonely Planet or Yelp has some ideas as well. History here, not sure if I'd trust the reccos without proper research: https://theculturetrip.com/europe/p...ing-polish-food-the-best-milk-bars-in-krakow/ I think we ate here, because the picture of the menu looks familiar, but they all may look like that I have no idea: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaur...w_Lesser_Poland_Province_Southern_Poland.html
I haven't really 'avoided' Mexico, but it's always been pretty low on my list because it's kind of always there/so close. Mexico City has really blown up the past few years and it's at the top of a lot of lists. That and Tulum are my top places to visit down there, but 2 entirely different feels obviously.
I know nothing about MC and why she loved it so much. Tulum blew away any expectation I had of the Yucatan Peninsula. I've always been real apprehensive bc mega resorts is a massive turn off
Big fan of Krakow. Food and females were both off the charts. This is a pretty cool place to visit while there https://www.wieliczka-saltmine.com/
Mexico City was number 1 on the NY Times 'Places To Go 2016' list. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/01/07/travel/places-to-visit.html
Other than both the Bears and Bulls losing we had a great time, great city. We did all the touristy shit, hit the Millennium Park, Magnificent Mile, ate some Chicago style pizza (Al Malnati’s), Chicago style hot dog (Portillo’s). Would definitely like to go again maybe during the summer to try some other food, Navy pier, and check out Willis tower.
Now I have 2 years to plan an epic 40th for my wife since she hit me with sports weekend. She set the bar pretty high.
Agreed, I think you could spend your whole life seeing cool shit stateside and never run out of things to see. Maybe when the kids are grown I be able to talk her into world traveling.
Yeah, curious what the rationale is. I don't meet a lot of people who refuse to go out of the country out of personal choice. The ones I do are all in some weird visa situation.
She’s a woman so I would say a little of both. I’m not sure what her rationale is. I think she’s anti-3rd world counties with resorts and doesn’t really have a desire to see Europe/Asia. I think I could talk her into Europe. My ultimate life goal is to get these kids raised, buy a VW bus, and travel the U.S. like a couple of hippies....she’s not feeling that either.
