getting korean bbq and only needing a $2 big bottle of beer and a $1.50 bottle of soju to get a nice buzz going is clutch
Japan Rugby World Cup trip finally starting to take shape: 2 nights in Kobe (Scotland-Samoa) 1 in Fukuoka (USA-France) 3 in Osaka (Georgia-Fiji) 2 in Kyoto 1 in a ryukan/onsen near Izu 4 in Tokyo (USA-Argentina) then fly to Maui for a wedding for 4 nights. Got my JRail pass bought, tickets for the games (had to wait in an online queue for 10 hours on Saturday, started in 260,000th place in line when I woke up Saturday morning) and most of the hotels booked. Next up is getting some reservations at Tokyo restaurants. Jiro worth trying to get into or is there plenty of other good sushi with less hype?
Hostel reccos in Amalfi, Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre? Have a buddy going. I think he's 26 or 27, and going with a bunch of buddies. Pretty sure they would want the party life. He's landing in Rome, and then has 9 days that are relatively open. My recco was Rome --> Florence --> Cinque Terre --> Lake Como (if time). I think he said he was def doing Amalfi which kind of throws that recommendation out the door, so if he goes Rome --> Amalfi --> how would you guys wrap up the trip? I haven't done enough of Italy to give the best advice, and I know many of you have.
Just booked NYC for Dec 28-1. Direct flights from NOLA to Newark then LGA to NOLA were like 300ish. Staying at the Beekman in downtown Manhattan. Pretty expensive that time of year, like $500 a night.
We did the Hacker tent which was really fun. It’s one of the bigger tents and known for partying but filled with more locals. Also spent time in the Hofbrau tent which was lots of fun but almost all tourists. Walked around others just to see them and they were all cool. I would just google them and pick one that fits what you want to do and what type of crowd you want.
Was going to do a solo trip to Europe but talked my dad into going. Flying into Paris and flying out of Barcelona. 2 questions: We want to do 2 nights somewhere in between. Looking at Geneva and Marseille but am open to suggestions. Need hotel recs for Barcelona...or a part of town. He doesn't really want to stay in a hostel but I'm sure if I could find a cool one with a private room he'd consider it.
Don't have specific location recs but Airbnb has been my go to for our Europe trips; generally much cheaper than hotels, obviously more than hostels but should be comparable to a hostel private room
He told me that he was heading to the Amalfi Coast today, and asked for hostel recommendations. . I told him Hostel Birkette in Positano -- anyone stayed there?
london accepts google pay(other other contactless options) for all transit. no more oyster card needed. this trend is fantastic, Paris seems like it might be good to go by the time I get there as they're transitioning to a similar model
Going to England for the first time in November with my wife, mom and dad. We are going to be in London for about 5 days, Manchester for 2 and Liverpool for a day trip. Going to a game in Manchester and will probably do something Beatles related in Liverpool with my dad who is a huge fan. Any suggestions beside the obvious tourist sites in London? What part of London should we look at hotels in? My mom doesn't move around well and I know my dad wants to stay somewhere where he can wonder from the hotel and see some stuff on his own when my mom needs a rest.
hi sexy people any recs for dive sites in Maui? I'm staying in Wailea and I'm AOW certified so looking for something really fun.
for people thinking about Banff Spoiler Widespread deal to Calgary got us saying please and thank you to the powers that be. For some routes the cheapest available fares are basic economy, which means early seat selection is not included except for routes on Alaska which offers a limited number of seats for early selection. It costs $10 - $30 each way to upgrade to regular economy if you want early seat selection. Most routes on American and United are regular economy and include early seat selection. A checked bag costs $30 each way on all airlines in both regular and basic economy. Travel tip: Be sure to visit the oh-so-blue waters of Banff National Park. You won't regret it! Barcelona bros -- talk to me about bars and nightlife (other than it's pretty wild and goes all night). We're staying with my buddy who lives in the Gothic Quarter. Las Ramblas - this is just a street with a ton of bars and street drinking, correct? Any must-see bars or nightlife spots to check out, or just kind of wander around? Does everything kind of revolve around this area?
Las Ramblas is very touristy and just covered with tourist bars - don't spend time there. El Born and Gothic Quarter are probably my favorite for going out in. Check out Razmatazz - I'm not a club person AT ALL but it is a huge warehouse club with tons of different rooms and DJs and I had a ton of fun there... it's a unique experience and open til crazy late. https://www.barcelonahacks.com/best-bars-in-barcelona/ https://www.barcelonahacks.com/barcelona-nightlife/
Not to rain on his parade, but Amalfi coast isn't that great for partying. I went with my ex-girlfriend, I would have been pretty bored just going with friends. It's essentially a couples or family trip. If he is *set* on it, I would recommend staying in Sorrento and just doing a day trip to Positano. First, it's bigger than Positano and probably has better night life season. Second, it's cheaper and he can take a 45 minute ferry to Positano in the morning, then back in the evening. Third, Positano is pretty much a straight hill up and down - it's meant for relaxing with your significant other, hitting up the beach all day, going up and down once for dinner, then going back to the hotel. If he wants to party, try Sorrento, or even Naples. If I were him and wanted partying, I'd probably do something like: Rome (4 nights) Florence (3 nights) Naples or Sorrento (2 nights; one day see Pompeii and Naples, one day see Positano or Capri) Then back on the high speed Naples to Rome train and back out. (I also say this with Positano being one of my favorite places in the world - just not a great buddies trip)
Re-read my post, and was too harsh on Las Ramblas. Definitely stroll up in down in the day time and stop at a market and get some food or something, but just don't use it for partying late. It's touristy but worth walking up and down for a couple hours during the day - just don't eat/drink on the street.
Search this thread for London tourist spots: Borough Market, Camden Town, Hyde Park, Greenwich, Primrose Hill, Palaces, Westminster, Museums, Tower of London, etc. Spoiler Where you stay mostly depends on what type of experience youre looking for. Live like a local, see as much shit as possible, neighborhood variety, etc. But sounds like its a first time trip geared towards tourist spots and be centrally located for that. If so, and bc of parents, I would look around in this general vicinity or down by Pimlico/SloanSquare...will pay a bit more but thats what it takes to check the location box. You could stay in The City near St Paul's for a more affordable rate....but it can be dead on the weekends. Whereas West London is always happening. For your Mom - Ubers/Taxi are plentiful. Make sure youre close to a Tube stop too, esp if your Dad wants to explore. You're going to love Manchester. Lots of cool breweries and restaurants along River Irwell (towards Old Trafford unfortunately). But the Emirates complex is cool too.
Opium Mar is my favoritas club alongside Razmatazz which another poster mentioned. Opium is on the beach, I would suggest here first. Razzmatazz a bit more grimy, grinding type of place but dope Got an Airbnb 4 blocks off Las Ramblas and was held up at gunpoint so I wouldn’t wander too far off.
I second Opium. Theres a few other bars right beside Opium that all back up to the beach also. Can grab a few beach beers and head back into the club.
Man there are always super cheap flights to mainland China. Here's another: Spoiler Free members missed out on $398 *biz class* roundtrip fares to Guatemala this week. Go Premium to get all the cheap flight alerts. Get all the deals A really really really ridiculously good-looking deal to Beijing. FYI, some Delta routes can be upgraded to Comfort+ for around $70 each way, if you'd like a few extra inches of legroom. Also, some Hainan routes may have an overnight layover in Chengdu. If this is the case for your itinerary, be sure to check if it qualifies for a free transit hotel. No bag fees, etc. Travel tip: Instead of just going to the restored, touristy part of the Great Wall for a day trip, you can do a hike on the "Wild Wall," and then spend the night camping in one of the watchtowers. there's a killer premium economy fare from seattle to singapore right now that I want but with the way my schedule is i'd have to go like 8 days after getting back from Japan and only have 5-6 days over there. 16 hour flight from seattle for 5-6 days is rough plus positioning flights from here
It's really hard to justify spending 20+ hours on flights for a 5-6 day trip. If it's a redeye, maybe. We're only in Spain for 8-9 days, but flights to Europe are 10-11 hours and our flight back is 12, still feel like we're not getting a lot of ROI
I usually fly to Hawaii twice a year and have learned that 10 days is the shortest I can stay in between two flights that long (11 hours there 9 back). And even still, I have to spend a lot of money and time figuring out how to glam up those flight hours to make them an enjoyable part of the experience in order to make it worth it.
moved points to Virgin Atlantic to book anniversary trip to amsterdam during tulip season, would probably do Belgium as well realized it's Deltas old business class seat and now second guessing :0 my brain is poisoned by travel websites
Going on honeymoon to Bali in a few days and we elected to extend our trip from 9 nights to 12 nights because of that reason alone. After a 24 hr travel day, I want to make sure we’re making it worth it.
As long as its not angle flat it will be fine. My opinion is as long as the seat goes flat and you can sleep, thats what matters. I've flown like 10 different airlines internation first and business across the board from Singapore and ANA down to British and 8 across United and even though they're the "worst" I wouldn't hesitate to fly them again if I found a good points deal. Plus in my experience, using Virgin points is difficult so I'd jump on that.
Yeah I'll probably just book but also running the numbers on Delta one suites to Korea. Just better value.
What kind of backpack do you guys use as a little carry-on? For now I have been using the Ogio backpack from the office that has a bunch of pockets and has enough room to toss a couple small items in as well (like a toiletry bag and/or a couple shirts or something. I have been seeing the Nomatic travelpack pop up but that seems pretty pricey.
Those seats are fine. Big, good service, and you will get your money in booze. My issue with them is their euro flights, at least everytime in my experience, dont have Wifi.
I’m as addicted to the internet as anybody but if you can’t entertain yourself on a plane without WiFi you’re a bad traveler.
Does anyone have a preference on airport lounges? I fly Delta, American, and United about evenly and ORD has all 3. Not sure if there is anything that sets them apart.
Its like domestic first class. Wider seat, more legroom, more recline. Definitely a solid step up from economy, but not close to international business class.
Price jump on many routes is marginal. For a 12 hr trip I think I paid $60 each way. Very worth it at that price for me. Especially on planes that don't do two across by windows which are clutch when it's just me and the wife.
I'm a First/Business Class snob on long haul flights but a few months ago we got put in Premium Economy for our FRA-DFW flight and was pleasantly surprised. Even at the steep discount I get I've now had second thoughts about whether it's worth the extra expense or miles for Business vs PE
Looking at it for the ATL-Jo-burg route. GF can't come so I'll be flying solo, which should save some money. Will probably fly economy on the way to S Africa, then either Premium or Biz on the way back. Going to try and holdout until the $300 Chase travel credit kicks in in December. This is encouraging.
I've spent my Friday trying to decide between Namibia or Mozambique for a week after Afrikaburn. Leaning towards the desert. Moz beaches look amazing, but it looks a lot more touristy.
