Never went to Chiang Rai but I had 4 days in Mai and didn't see the value in spending the travel time either
between 150-250 depending on how many pieces and the material. He’s got all kind of materials and prints. It was a bit overwhelming so I just asked for a popular grey print in the silk/cashmere blend since I already have the standard single-color suits. He had a burgundy suit being made for someone else that looked sexy af. But I recently bought a burgundy coat a couple months back from bonobos for ~$300
Idk man there’s so many tailor stores in the big cities and all of them have a salesman outside soliciting people it’s hard to not think about them
If you want to get a suit in SE Asia, just spend like 30 minutes online doing some research. There are a ton, but I'd imagine only a few are top quality. I got a whole wardrobe in Vietnam for like $800 -- 3 suits, 2 jackets, and 3 shirts, all perfectly tailored.
Need bag suggestion: My wife and I are doing 2+weeks in Europe. City hopping. Madrid, Athens, santorini, Rome, then Cruise back to Barcelona (Naples, Florence, Monte Carlo, Spanish island). Since we will be on the move a lot, looking for the ideal backpacking style bag for that trip. I assume we will pack for half and wash.
I have this. Held everything for a 10 day trip in Europe without having to wash. Zip off daypack is nice bc you can break it down in two smaller bags when you’re getting on a bus etc
I second the digital nomads are generally insufferable It’s pretty cool for a North American big city imo, especially in the summer.
Never been to Canada so that'd be cool in itself. Obviously even better if I could stretch it out and go another place or two while up there, but not sure if I'd be able. Thanks
Ottawa and Montreal are only 5 hours away by car/train so should be feasible to add one of them as you see fit.
If I did it, I'd think Toronto + Montreal + maybe somewhere a little more outdoorsy. Ottawa's kind of generic government capital city, isn't it?
Good bag. I got the next size up and agree the day pack is very convenient. Pretty easy to rig a camelbak out a hole in the top zipper thru an elastic slot on one shoulder strap. water bag fits nicely inside the furthest back pouch inside that has a water-resistant divider from the rest of the inside.
Question about Spirit airlines. I have never flown them due to the stellar reputation. We're supposed to go to Zion in March, plan was to fly in/out of Vegas. GF waited too long to purchase tickets, and now they're super high. There is a somewhat cheap option that leaves Seattle at 6:00 AM, non-stop ... on Spirit. Would also have to fly back to Seattle on Spirit. Would you risk it?
you can do the math* if you look up their on time performance between those two cities, but I think McCarron (sp?) is a hub for them. *The math on the risk factors for the trade off between say Delta and Spirit
Spirit is fine if you know what you’re getting into. If you’re willing to pay a few of the up charges for a better experience it won’t be much different from another airline. Granted my only experience was on a DFW-Denver round trip, but it was an average airline experience
Just know all the hidden costs. Outside being late, the biggest complaint is ppl don't know they will get nickle and dimed for everything
I'd only fly spirit if they take the route more than once a day. I know too many people who got cancelled on and rebooked for 2-4 days later since that was the "next flight"
Happened to my gf trying to meet up with me in Chicago a few years ago. Had to connect through DFW and the flights to and from PHX were both canceled and the next flights were some absurd amount of time later. I've never flown them myself after that debacle. I've never seen a fare low enough compared to other options that was worth the potential headaches.
I’ll be flying my first budget domestic airline (Frontier) on Friday. Not feeling so comfortable. However, I do have a few things going for me: one hour flight, only carrying a small backpack and it was $26 for the one-way. Do I have to be at the gate sooner than normal?
The_Baumer thoughts on doing a self-drive in Namibia, specifically Etosha? Our group is considering driving ourselves from Swakopmund to Sossusvlei, then driving Sossusvlei -- Windhoek -- Etosha, spend two full days in Etosha doing it ourselves. Lots of information online regarding doing it yourself...
As someone who flies spirit and Allegiant more than 30 legs a year, I can say they get a bad rap. My experience overall with them isn’t much different than The mainline carriers especially now with all the basic economy options which are basically the same as flying a budget airline.
for the record I have been butt fucked by Southwest more than any other airline combined. their airport ops outside of their hubs is atrocious.
Has anyone been to Roatan/Bay Islands in Honduras? Looking for recs on where to stay. Going to spend most of my time diving.
Spent a week in Utila getting my open water license. Stayed in a hostel that was hot as hell and had mosquitoes everywhere.
yep we went in July. It was enjoyable, and luckily our days lined up perfectly to miss the cruise ship peasants We stayed at Puerta Azul in Sandy Bay, and it was around $90 a night for a private casita right on the beach. It was a 10 minute or so drive to West Bay, and remote/small enough that it felt relatively secluded. The reef is swimmable from their pier and was incredible for snorkeling. We didn't dive but I can only imagine how beautiful it must be around the island. If you're into spicy stuff there's a great hot sauce that was on nearly every table we sat at on Roatan, and since my BIL is a hot sauce enthusiast we brought him a bottle. He loved it but his research indicates that it's almost exclusively available on the island and nowhere else. It looks like this: Spoiler
Thanks, going to do West end since it's where all the dive shops are. Where do the cruise ship peasants congregate or do they just take over like cockroaches everywhere?
Heading to Southeast Asia at the end of May for the first time. So far all we have is we're flying back from Bangkok on 6/6. Planning to leave 5/22 and get in 5/24. Going to spend time in Bangkok (probably front end), Chiang Mai, and Siem Reap (to see Angkor Wat, thanks BayouMafia). It's our honeymoon so soon to be Mrs. Saint would like to get 2ish days in on an island. Research seems to say Ko Samui for early in rainy season? Other thoughts?
The gulf of Thailand has different rainy patterns than the Andaman Sea. Ko Samui is good for a two day jaunt pending what the weather forecasts are.
Any recs on where to stay in Rome? 5 of us in our early 30s looking at different airbnbs. Not sure which areas of Rome are better than others
Search AirBnB for a place in Rome called “Nobility and Elegance”. It’s located at Via Monterone, 4. There are 5 bedrooms. It’s in the Largo Argentina neighborhood and very safe. The Pantheon is a 4 minute walk. Restaurants, Cafes and bars all over. A small grocery store is 2 doors down. Bus, tram and taxi connections are a 2 minute walk. 15 minute walk to the Colosseo and Trastevere. 20 to Vatican City, Borghese Gardens and Termini Station. What time of year will you be there? April through October make sure your place has Air Conditioning. Also, AirBnBs are taxed in Rome. Make sure you ask the host about the amount prior to booking a place.
GF flying to Copenhagen for 2 weeks for work today. She found out that she had to go only on Tuesday, so I won't be joining her. She'll have to go back for another 2 weeks later in this project she's working on. 100% going to try to join her for a bit that time. Excites.
Yeah I looked for the place you recommended and it isn’t available our days. Going to try and book something in the next day or two
We stayed at Pantheon in the Window. Only 3 bdrms for the five of us but perfect for our needs since the wife and I tend to share a bed Edit: looks like it's been slightly renovated since we were there a year ago.
Any safety tips/info for Cape Town? I fly there next Sunday and basically want to know how comfortable you were walking around during the day and at night. I’ve read a bunch of stuff but opinions seem to vary from “totally safe as long as you’re not an idiot” to “don’t go outside until you can see your uber out front”. I’m not worried about my personal safety per se but would prefer to not get mugged and lose my phone.
its impossible to get a read on safety anywhere with the insane fear mongering on the internet unless you know people who've gone its really annoying
Was there in 2010, parts of long st were a little shady but I never truly felt at risk. I felt like I was in more danger when I’ve been to Baltimore
It’s fine, we walked everywhere. Just be smart. Where are you staying? There’s one street near downtown that gets pretty sketchy at night, but I cant remember the name of it. But it’s not somewhere you traditionally would go out.
