Great idea, I won't be one of the people doing that (I'll be one of the last to get back on the travel train probably) but for those willing to it'll be a great deal

Really hoping to take advantage of this but I doubt I will. I'm in the airline industry and while my job is safe, we're facing possibly pay reductions and certain loss of annual bonus which is rather large so I doubt it will be financially prudent to take a vacation during that time

I will add that many counties are preventing real estate companies from doing check in’s until July. Big hit for them obviously.

edit: Let’s be honest, no one should make any plans to travel in the US until August and even then it is 50-50. If you have a hook up that is different (family house near a private beach, etc). Don’t spend any money that is non-refundable obviously.

man, we are going to see a travel boom when the time comes.

I've just been taking credits and cash refunds for flights so far, I feel like trying to book anything out at this point is just going to lead to more disappointment.

Still don't have a waiver in effect for my flight home from Bangkok in early June which is extremely frustrating.

It most certainly will not be financially prudent for me to travel after this is over.

And I will give zero fucks.

I read this morning in the New York Times that Trump has ordered the building of the wall to be sped up so that we can prevent the further spread of COVID-19 from Mexico.

My dream for a while has been to travel full-time, or at least 6-8 months out of the year. But I'm pretty risk-averse with my finances, so unless I win the lottery or get an unexpected six-figure inheritance, it would be pretty irresponsible for me to go. But this pandemic sort of puts into perspective how little that shit actually matters. Not to the naive extreme of not needing money, but an understanding that I don't need a six-figure income. I could get by on like less than 1/2 my salary (especially when not paying $2-3K/month for housing), especially in many non-Western countries. So why the fuck not? Sick and fucking tired of staring at a computer screen for 9-10 hours/day, for what? Really the only thing I can't leave is my dog.

I've thought long and hard about it -- one thing that's not often mentioned is you're going to miss out on lots of developing friendships, friend's weddings, friend's bachelor parties, lots of sporting events with college buddies, stuff like that -- can't exactly catch a flight from Thailand for a weekend in NOLA. Hard for relationships, too (unless you can find the right partner with a similar mindset). Most of my really close friends are married, and lots of them have children, so many of those days are behind me; but you're going to miss out on a lot of family and friends. Just a reality of it.

I've already begun the process of going minimal. Have a bunch of clothes packed up to drop off at Goodwill immediately after this is over; going to put a bunch of furniture for sale; start getting rid of "stuff." Right now my loose goal is to take off in fall/winter of 2021.

We faced the hard truth last night that the entirety of 2020 is likely lost. Any plans or things scheduled for the future just got reset and pushed back a full year. Travel, career aspirations, etc.

I’m in a higher at-risk category. I’m looking at extreme social distancing/stay at home until a vaccine is approved and distributed. So at least a year, and probably another six months beyond that.

What is the likelihood of most of the world barring travel from the US in 2021 because we end up being terrible at this?

imagine chase will be able to get my money back easier since the hotel is literally shuttered so I wouldn't be able to stay anyways

Got an 80% refund from the truck company in Namibia, which I'm more than happy about. So after canceling Zion and Africa, I'm out less than $500 all together. Take that as a win.

If you've spent enough time in Italy shouldn't surprise you. Nomads love Vietnam

There should probably be a separate ranking for remote work type of living versus having a regular office type job living. I’d imagine places like Vietnam would be high on the remote work one but much lower on the regular job one.

Feel like this is for nomads vs living in place. Most of the worst cities have extreme high cost of living

They should probably change the title from expats then because I wouldn’t consider nomads expats since they typically are on tourist visas iirc and hop from country to country.

After reviewing the website, I think this is accurate -- it's more about trying to get a local job and grow a career in a foreign country. Still, good for cost of living, livability, etc.

But I overall agree, big difference between being an expat and working in a foreign country vs getting a remote job in the US and traveling.

or if we didn't have six figure loans to pay off requiring going to countries that pay high salaries

I’m skeptical that places Ho Chi Minh are great for that. How many non Vietnamese speaking career type jobs are there?

Same with Montreal. Not knowing french is generally known as a huge hindrance in the french Canadian professional world.

At the end of the day I guess none of these lists are ever perfect as it’s highly dependent on one’s situation, skills, wants and needs, etc.

Question. What happens if i skip the last leg of a flight. Say my outbound flight is A-B-C. And Return is C-B-A but i jump off at B and don't take the last flight to A? I assume nothing happens and all is good to go?

If you do it without a valid reason you risk losing status if you have it. Also, I imagine you know this, but you won’t be able to check a bag coming back.

It's a whole thing called skiplagging or "hidden city ticketing." It's been a controversial topic.

Also, beware that if there are delays they might rebook you A-D-C and you never get to B.

Plus obviously you can't check a bag
