I think Emery is a great hire for you guys, surprised people would be disappointed. Way better than giving the job to Arteta
I didn’t talk myself into Arteta as much as I just accepted it as inevitable, so this is definitely a surprise. We seem to have done a strangely good job of keeping things under wraps. Pretty apathetic to the hire, hope I’m proven wrong.
I feel like there's always a narrative made up; I don't follow that many arsenal people on twitter but most I do expressed big reservations about Arteta. Now, everyone is upset it's not Arteta. Which 1 is it. Talked myself into Arteta but this makes more sense for a squad of most our best players all reaching 30 or there. Probably won't last over 3 years but hopefully can build us an identity because we don't have 1 right now. The "beautiful football" hasn't been seen in years.
“Look at me” as fuck but I don’t care.... visa sent me this tweet about 5 minutes after I walked out of the PSG Store on the Champs-Elysees. Y’all welcome.
I was ready to plunge into the deep unknown but at least we got a guy who has managed a single game in his life. He’s a pretty defensive minded coach right or am I off? From my incredibly uninformed perspective, his Sevilla teams seemed to at least try hard and in an exciting style. That’s pretty much all I can hope for at this point.
I'm happy it wasn't Arteta, hiring a former teammate to manage the coddle culture with the Arsenal locker room would have been a shit show. Arteta is too close to be the bad guy, and Arsenal needs a bad guy manager right now because the squad is filled with a bunch of bottlers. However this is an iffy hire considering the candidates available. The only good news is I know, and everyone knows, this isn't going to be a long term replacement. Two years tops. Emery does not speak the language and isn't a long term squad builder. This is a short term hire meant for short term results. Whatever. What Emery did in La Liga with Valencia and Sevilla is completely defensible. Which is why I brought up Ramos, because he too had Sevilla skins on the wall and was considered at the time of the hire, a game changer. At PSG, Emery had zero control of the room and was considered a dead manager walking for the greater part of the year. Tuchel was essentially hired months ago. I will deep dive more into Emery later but... 1) This really shows how Wenger and Kroenke holding on fucked over the club. Retire at the right time and Arsenal gets either Pep or Klopp. Retire at the wrong time and this is what Arsenal gets? Fuck. Wenger did not put this club in a good position for the transition. That'll be part of his legacy also. 2). Out of all the major candidates available, this is the guy Ivan can close on? Doesn't bode well for Ivan or the future. Allegri should be the hire right now. Ancelotti. Nagelsmann. Conte (I'd take Conte over Emery). Enrique. I think Nagelsmann would have fit this operating structure better and would have had an opportunity to be a legacy hire. We will back in this position sooner rather than later.
I'm excited to have a coach who will prepare the team tactically for the opponent as opposed to just doing the same thing every match and expecting the talent to shine through.
He managed probably 80% of his career against a stacked deck, which is great from my perspective. Continually lost players in Spain and put other guys into his "system(s)" who flourished. Obviously managing a larger club is more difficult but he did his job at PSG minus getting out of the knockouts, but we're used to that.
Was he considered on this go around for them? I figured now would have been the time for them to make that hire if they were going to do it.
Like Emery better than Arteta and not really sure why Arsenal twitter is outraged. It’s a meh hire but certainly better than the other options thrown around who were actually interested.
European soccer club buys players. Tune in at 11 for our expose on how a youth academy and vast scouting network was amassed, by one Spanish wizard. Riveting stuff. Spoiler Good read on the lad there. Doesn't change my opinion at all.
Not familiar at all with Emery’s teams, reads like if Rafa Benitez had people skills. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/may/27/sevilla-manager-europa-league-final-unai-emery Spoiler: 442 Tactics corner (with Michael Cox) "Back-to-back Europa League victories with Sevilla means Unai Emery must now be considered one of Europe’s foremost tacticians. "On the face of it, Emery seems like a classic Spanish coach – he likes attractive passing football; he wants quick wingers and intelligent central midfielders; he usually plays a 4-2-3-1 system, with a two-striker formation considered something of a daring alternative.
I like the hire and think he will be better now than Mikel would’ve been Did I see someone mention Enrique as a better option? What? So with him liking the 4-2-3-1 what are we looking at with the current squad? ———————-Lacazette Aubameyang———Özil——————? —————Ramsey——Xhaka Monreal——-—-?———-?————Bellerin ?
I'd imagine he would play Ramsey higher and on the right more if he stays No idea what he is going to play out of the back of the midfield. Jack out wide is reductive. So many interesting questions, especially through the middle. No idea how he is going to handle some of our players that have had zero positional instructions or limitations. Finally SS, Cech took the 1 today so that's a pretty safe assumption he's there. Ospina out as well I would assume.
Pretty stoked we didn’t go with Arteta or Viera. Will be digging into Emery’s tactics over the next few weeks.
i have nothing to add other than to say ornstein memes are, at worst, a top 5 meme on the internet imo
Listening to Arsecast now. They were going all in on Mikel for a good bit. I know it was posted and saw on twitter. Can't wait for the bomb to drop. Edit: It was hilarious. Good listen, if you want to skip ahead 40 minutes or so to hear the Emery part you wont miss much. Really enjoyed Phillipe's assessment, cliffs, disciplinarian and tactician. Definitely what we need and with that we should have some guys slot into some actual positions and at least be able to evaluate if they will work or not.
