I have had two Pebbles, the original Kickstarter and now the Time, that I have been very happy with. Fitbit acquired Pebble's assets back in February, so you won't get any support for their product if there are issues but they are still available for purchase (at least based on my Amazon search).
Yeah I had the second pebble, looking for something a little more. Problem with the Android watches is the battery life
Battery life is what I like most about the Pebbles I have owned; I would not enjoy having to charge a watch every night.
So I either changed something somehow without knowing or the recent update to Chrome Beta put the address bar and bookmarks at the bottom of the page. I don't hate it but it's def taking me a minute to get used to it.
Been on O since beta #2 (1st ota). No issues. Just need the pixel2 to be announced so I can plop down my $850 on a pre-order.
Just realized that nobody in here has posted about the essential phone: https://www.essential.com/ It's had a bunch of hype but I haven't been following too much. Kind of a 1+1 from a company that isn't shit, or close to the pixel line. https://9to5google.com/2017/08/22/essential-phone-first-impressions-video/
I liked Moto back before they got bought up by Lenovo. I've been hesitant on them ever since due to Lenovo's far less than stellar track record.
It's nice for sure but the lack of water resistance is laughable for something that is supposed to be a flagship level device.
And the lack of a headphone jack. To be fair though if it's like the pixel, it might be water resistant and just not certified.
Tyrion has a movie that's free for 2 weeks before it goes to the theaters on google play. https://www.engadget.com/2017/08/15/peter-dinklage-film-rememory-hits-google-play-on-august-24th/
Anyone here use a Fitbit? I've got a Surge, and when I paired it to my SG8 the Surge's battery drains like crazy; it was full Sunday night and it was at low battery this afternoon. When I had it synched to my iPhone, I could get 4ish days between a charge.
go in the settings within fitbit, there are two settings that can greatly reduce battery on both. I have both turned off FWIW, it only syncs my info when I manually tell it to.
Is there no longer any benefit to buying through your cell phone provider? I'm looking to get a new phone here in the next month and am probably going to go with a Note 8, S8+ or Pixel XL 2 and mostly just want to know if I should just go through Samsung or Google to get whatever I choose instead of Verizon since, as far as I can tell, you pay full retail price regardless. I haven't bought a new phone in a while (currently have a Note 4) so those were still the days of paying like $300 for a phone and getting a 2-year contract. Also, any input from those of you who probably research this stuff a lot more than I have would be cool on the 3 phones I mentioned. I've seen a lot of people saying to just go with an S8+ because the Note 8 is basically just a more expensive version of that. I liked the Pixel XL and actually planned on getting one last year but my order got screwed up and I didn't bother redoing it.
I don't know about the current phones but I believe when you were under contract they essentially gave you a $200 stipend to update your phone. For me, it wasn't worth the $400 stipend(total for me and my wife) I got because moving to a monthly plan saved me like $600 over the 2 your plan's monthly rate.
Yeah, I don't even pay for my service (covered by work) so I only ever had to handle the cost of the phone. I'm just trying to make sure there's no reason to go through my provider anymore.
I don't know anything about the Samsung phones but one major advantage to getting a Pixel/Pixel XL from Google instead of Verizon is that you were able to unlock the bootloader much easier if at all depending on when you purchased it. This may or may not be the case for the Pixel XL 2 but should be a consideration if you like getting root access, running custom ROMs/Kernels, etc.
Re: where to buy (warning, long) Remember when you'd have an upgrade on your line and you'd buy a new iPhone outright for $250 from your carrier and sign a 2 year contract? Gone. Based on my understanding of the economics, Apple was largely behind that business model innovation of getting the carrier to subsidize most of the hardware cost. Now, most people are paying the full cost of the phone (often $700+) over the course of 2 or so years in monthly installments. Sometimes they give you a small monthly credit, sometimes not. Sometimes there are trade in incentives, but I don't like those, because it essentially means you rented your device @buy dont lease. I got to give it to carriers, they've offloaded the entire hardware cost onto the consumer, when they used to subsidize it. Personally, I'd buy my phone outright from whoever will give me the best warranty (read: replacement/repair) coverage. With $900 cost, bad or exploding batteries, boot loops, etc, its important to be protected in case something fails. For the Pixel, that is (in order) 1) Fi store 2) Google Store 3) Verizon Unless you want to risk it, I wouldn't recommend buying from any other retailer, unless its an official channel (eg best buy selling you a VZW Pixel). I almost bit at buying a Pixel XL on ebay for $500 a month or two ago, but the warranty coverage is very limited at best. My N5x failed right outside of the warranty period, but Fi replaced it for me with a new one. They've replaced it a total of 3 times, and because of that, I'll be smashing F5 on Oct 4th on the Fi website.
We are the same. On my fourth Nexus 5x and anxiously looking to upgrade to the new pixel before this one dies.
I have the 6p and am trying to hold off on getting a new phone. That year of google phones was not good.
Took advantage of a promotion and turned in my s6 edge and got $300 credit, then used my work $650 tuition/seminar/gadget reimbursement and got the Note8 yesterday. Basically got it for free and now my monthly payments on my phone will be $25 / less a month because I'm not on their next plan anymore since it's paid off. It was a good day and I love the phone so far, but it's huge, will take some time to get used to The dual camera on the back is awesome. It'll let you focus in and zoom on an object and simultaneously take the wide shot. I haven't played around with it much yet. Also battery life is way better than my s6 edge, which was extremely bad and was my only real complaint about the s6 edge
Like Duvel said, VZW also does consumer unfriendly stuff like locking the bootloader, having delays in software otas, charging higher price than Google etc
The Android blogs say that there are intermittent accounts of people sending their N6p in to Google for repair only to be replaced with a Pixel XL. That would be quite the customer service, were it to happen.
My battery life is going to shit and it randomly cuts off. I want to get a new phone but not sure it's worth $800 to me
I'm going to wait and see if the original Pixel prices drop at all after 10/4 and see what the availability is like. I'm getting to the point where I don't care about the latest and greatest I just want something for a decent price.
I think you can get another year of really, really high performance out of a Pixel XL...and 2 years of solid performance. I'm still getting the new one in a few weeks, so if someone wants to buy my Pixel XL, it will be available. I'd do a market rate(Swappa, Ebay, etc.)- $100 for a TMB'er.
Pixel's are good phones but sorely lacking in features for a premium device. Got to be better than the last NExus phones though. Great phones but didn't generally hold up well. From what I have seen from the Pixel phone leaks, another uninspiring release. I'm likely done with purchasing whatever phones Google decides to release any more. Google needs to learn a thing or two from Samsung on the software side. Stock Android is great, what Samsung does with it (aside from the UI still needing work) is even better. If Samsung could just get with the times with OS updates... Pretty happy with my S8 right now, will either stick with Samsung or switch to iPhone in a 2-3 years.
Superior screenshots capabilities, multi-tasking is better though Google is stealing or has adopted that from Samsung, theming without having to root, etc.
Forgot until recently how easy it is to run emulators on Samsung compared to Apple. One app download later and I have a Nintendo DS in my pocket.
I'd be happy to spend $800+ on a device that addresses things like durability (to their credit, manufacturers have started to get better at this), longevity, and battery life. I don't need more processing power, really. The s6 I use now can do way more than I ask it to. It's the decline of the battery than makes me want to upgrade. Thats it. Hopefully lower end phones continue to develop, it seems like there are better options coming every year there.
My s6 battery got awful, to the point it'd die before lunch at work. My note 8 battery has been great so far especially given the large screen size
Yeah if it weren't for the ability to throw it on a wireless charging pad on my desk I'd be in trouble.
I just can't justify dropping $1k on a Pixel XL with 128GB. I really want to but there's just no way.
Yuck. After grabbing an S8+ and seeing the Note. And the new iPhone x or whatever and to throw out a ohone with them bezels......wtf
I think they both look good The smaller bezels look good but they're going to be a bitch when trying to use your phone with one hand imo.
