Explosive decompression at close to 30,000 ft would absolutely render you unconscious and almost instantly at that

A horizontal stabilizer failure can cause a dive like that. See the Alaska 261 crash
Although the plane being only 7 years old makes that unlikely

G forces most likely tore off the wings during the dive

I am in no means making a comment about anybody in particular in this thread, but nothing is more comical than the average interneters knowledge of flight mechanics and aviation in the immediate aftermath of a commercial airline crash. Three second grainy CCTV video and the internet (again, more generally speaking) has it solved before lunch.

Yeah fair. I have done trajectory analysis work on many failed missile launches and been in the “pilots” seat on a number of crashing drones but I am not an avionics or wide-body aircraft crash expert.

Of anybody on this board, I would actually take what you say seriously. My comment was mostly abut the phenomenon across the internet and social media when it comes to commercial crashes.

More like 30 seconds or so. I’ve done explosive decompression training and you have more than a few seconds to get your mask on and push oxygen before you pass out.

Fun fact: your ears hurt like shit the next day unless you pop them regularly

It’s actually a pretty fun day; they put you in a pressure chamber and take you “up” to about 20,000 feet and you take your mask off and just kind of hang out until you start getting hypoxia symptoms. Since they’re different for everyone you have to do it so if you’re ever in a slowly leaking aircraft you recognize “my hands are shaking and I can’t see blue anymore, there might be a problem.” Apparently about 1% of people get violently aggressive as a symptom so when that happens, everyone puts their mask back on except them and they set the chamber to 40,000 feet until the person passes out.

On the Lockerbie crash they said that passengers were probably awake for a significant amount of time after the bomb detonated and explosively decompressed the cabin.

just me or does the last graph show a leveling out before falling again? that doesn't jive w/ the flight aware graph of a free fall from cruising altitude.

Top graph shows 60 minutes worth of data, bottom one shows 2 minutes. Coulda been an attempted recovery or just the plane getting enough velocity to get enough lift to get the nose up for a minute. If you watch dead-engine landing training videos or hyper-glide vehicle flight profiles they look similar.

you'd think if we have this many videos of an isolated crash, we'd have more UFO videos these days...

Correct this is a 737-800 or 737NG. Same 737 design being flown since the early 90s.

Unless something departed the aircraft. Like say the empennage or a critical flight surface.
Yeah, 737s have 2 hydraulic systems that can power each other in case of failure. It's not dummy proof though.

It's not really worth even speculating about imo. We probably won't ever know.

Sure hope it wasn't a Germanwings situation where a pilot decided to kill themselves and others in as horrifying a fashion as one can. Sad that a terrible mechanical failure is maybe the best case scenario.

it’s a relatively new plane flying for an operator not known for having lax maintenance standards. A catastrophic failure is kinda concerning.

It's not a Max, my dude. It's a 737-800 which has been the workhorse of most airlines since the early 1990s.

I know, and fortunately there have been no issues at Boeing in the last 20 years to give off even the slightest concern about their quality control processes

To me, it seems like a reach to say it's concerning when we have no information about 1 plane that dropped out of the sky on the other side of the world. Unfortunately, I assume we won't get much information out of China as to what happened.

Plane age is not a good barometer of plane health. Most important are cycles (takeoff and landings), hours of flight, and then age. Most inspections are built based on time and cycles for this reason

Yeah, that's not what I said. We have no idea what caused it, but if it's a pilot, we don't need to worry about the 5000 other 737-800s in operation.

My concern if it was a pilot issue, is how do you prevent that from happening in the future? Mental health issues are the terrifying aspect for me.

If this was mechanical; hopefully it could be identified and fixed immediately with additional inspections routinely going forward.

I have to think it’s incredibly more difficult to prevent a pilot determined to hurt himself and his passengers.

Fair enough. I read that in a different tone. I just don't see a need to question the safety of the other 737s.
Especially when you start to figure out how horrible the current FAA mental health policies are. Essentially, if you seek help you're done as a pilot. The current policies just encourages you to "tough it out" instead of seeking help.

Looks like the Chinese suspect murder suicide.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/madeli...gest-china-eastern-jet-crash-was-intentional/

Data from a black box recovered from the wreckage of a China Eastern Boeing 737-800 jet that crashed in March, killing all 132 onboard, indicate someone in the cockpit intentionally caused the plane to crash, the Wall Street Journalreported on Tuesday.

I didn't see what altitude it was cruising at but if it was explosive decompression at 30-40,000ft then that renders you more or less unconscious instantaneously

This is true. I read somewhere that there were reports of cabin pressure issues. If you can report it then you should have been able to react. But I wasn’t there and can only guess.

Maybe... still be pissed as fuck to see a phone recording me after thinking I was a goner

I think proving the airline is at fault for taking a dangerous route would be the main thing though

Unless for some odd reason the flight attendants didn't do the safety rundown before takeoff
