No its where you fight the human reaper, destroy the collector base, then escape on the Normandy. Final scene Reapers awakening in deep space
gotcha, sure i would think so. I have a lot of older lists to look through, i saw one that had destroying the Normandy on it. Not that they are the arbiter of what is a set-piece, but I would imagine most big gaming moments apply.
If it's just a moment in gaming that stood out I would say when I first saw Rapture with Andrew Ryan speaking over the radio. Still gives me chills to this day. The train in UC2 is definitely a standout. I remember thinking how groundbreaking it was at the time.
In the same bioshock vein, ascending to Columbia, getting baptized, walking out to a city in the clouds. So captivating.
Going old school and FF here but the phantom train in FF6 was something else at the time. When cyan sees his wife and child :(
Sooo, late to the last of us game but am intrigued. I'm currently an Xbox dude(was a ps2 and 3 guy but listened to my dumbass brother in-law and switched. I now realize it was dumb and never fucking play anything with him because he sucks) and was wondering should I wait to buy the five and last of us 2 or just fucking buy the ps4 now? Edit, never mind 4's are still expensive. I'll wait
I need to give it some thought if passive moments work as set pieces, or if they need to be action sequences. I agree with PeterGriffin about arriving to Columbia, that is one of the most astounding and awesome scenes ever, the first look in the capsule, walking around the welcome center with the music playing, etc. Since that is passive though, not sure I'm going to include that, but it gives me an idea for a "best game-worlds" article.
Scarecrow is a good one, I'm tied on UC4 between the Clock Tower and the chase scene. Chase scene probably fits the definition better
Maybe save it if you want it for a cornerstone in its own article. I would say absolutely the moment you enter a new area and there's some triumphant orchestral moment should count. Riding to Mexico in RDR and building the house in RDR2 are spine-tingling moments when first experienced.
I’d wait. Either we’ll see a price drop on the Pro in the next few months or you can buy the PS5 for just a little more than the Pro currently retails for somewhere around November.
Thanks for the set-piece stuff y'all! I'm really excited for my next article, it's an interview with Colin Moriarty about his game development stuff, he just bought into the indie studio that he made his game with earlier this year so we talk about that and what's next for the studio, etc. Should be published in the next day or so.
Didn't even know he was still in gaming. Last I saw he was trying to do a YouTube channel but hadn't heard anything in a while.
Yeah he's still at it, arguably more successful than ever. When he left Kinda Funny he started Colin's Last Stand, he thought he wanted to do political stuff because he was burned out on games, realized like the rest of the world that politics actually sucks so he pivoted back to games, now he has the largest video-game/nerd culture patreon going, almost 10,000 patrons. He made a game last year with a small indie studio called Lillymo Games, and a couple months ago he bought half the studio, they plan to keep making games.
Patreon is such a weird thing. I've yet to see any content someone made that made me consider giving them money.
Colin is the only one that I have seen that I would consider doing that for, the dude puts 7 to 10 hours of content up each week plus he's streaming on Twitch a couple times a week, answers all the comments on his videos and whatnot. Very accessible and good to his patrons, I think he's definitely worth it at any price
Seeing Columbia for the first time Bioshock Infinite, Colussus #5 Avion from Shadow of the Colussus, Entering Mexico in Red Dead Redemption,
White Phosphorus and then having to walk through the aftermath in Spec Ops: The Line was haunting. The Boss fight against Psychomantis in MGS
I used to really like Colin, especially when he was paired with Greg. After Trump, Colin became unbearable, even though he isn't a Trump supporter. I think he just likes taking the contrarian view point on things. I also don't like his partner, so I could never get into his new shows. But, props for getting that interview. That's huge.
Yeah I’m really excited for OK and proud of him for landing that interview but I’m apprehensive to read it because I detest Colin so mightily
I'll read it later but nothing can change my mind that Colin Moriarty is a rancid piece of shit after the last several years.
He’s just similar to the guy from The Quartering. He tends to feed the most toxic side of the gamerverse
Was just gonna post this. Not a fan really, but we’re all grown now where we can justify a $10 increase for literally days of entertainment.
I’ll be honest, I’ve been seeing the argument for increasing game prices or decreased game budgets and I was soooo hoping for the latter
I mean there are certain sports games like Madden and some could argue the Show too, that should improve their product incrementally before charging $70 every year. $70 for patches to franchise mode is bullshit. $70 for games like GTA, Red Dead, TLOU, etc, well worth it imo
I certainly won't try to change y'alls mind on him, though if we were all together drinking beers I think I could. Regardless, I appreciate the good thoughts, the interview is strictly about his game dev stuff and gives a good look into how a small team makes a game. As for Colin, I'll say to my point of view, he has gotten a really raw deal in the press, so if that's all you know of him, you're definitely going to hate him. This board leans way left so I know libertarian and conservative viewpoints don't work here, but Colin is really down the middle on a lot of stuff. I've met the guy IRL, spent a bit of time with him at his home recording a podcast, followed his work for years, he's a legit good dude, humble and extremely hardworking. I'm not one of those guys who judges someone based on what his twitter fanbase does, but he's a way different person than he is portrayed. Anyway, enough of that, hope you enjoy the interview if you read it. Also, I emailed PushSquare today trying to get on with them as a freelancer, so here's hoping something comes from that. Cheerio.
Reminds me of most confrontations on The Last of Us Part 2, I was fully stocked, thought I was good, after the fight I've got two bullets and a fucking arrow. I couldn't shoot for shit to begin that game lol
