David Simon and Ed Burns Based on the Phillip Roth novel HBO Winona Ryder Zoe Kazan John Turturro Premiers in mid-March
From the good people who brought you the Wire. The premise being what would America look like if FDR lost to Lindbergh and we got fascism 80 years ago after siding with the Germans in WW2. 2004 Philip Roth book. Premiers tonight.
I never heard of this before a few weeks ago when I saw a preview for it, and I decided to read the book. The book was written in 2002. My jaw was on the floor w how much it relates to current events. You could have convinced me the author had a time machine. The book was amazing and I cant wait to watch this. If I read it 5-6 years ago, it would have been an interesting alternative history book. After the last 3 years, it's pretty incredible.
Knocked out the first two parts yesterday. This actually made me do a deep dive on Charles Lindbergh's life as well. Talk about jumping down a Nazi sympathizer rabbit hole.
I'm all-in on this after watching the first two last night. feel like the kid who plays Alvin is going to be the breakout from this show.
Agreed, the story moved on a great deal. The entire DC trip made me paranoid a good bit. The "Just Folks" program sounds like it will not end well. Given the time period and Lindbergh being potus. I expect that we see some Klan activity in Kentucky.
Yeah, this episode definitely accelerated things with pretty much every character. It's just like every Simon show, though. Not something you can watch casually, but a show you need to be locked in on the whole episode to really feel it. And I bet ratings are low, but it'll get rave reviews.
It feels like a great show but damn it just scares the shit out of me and that is sapping my enjoyment in some respects The diner scene with Herman singing and Mr. Taylor's presence however was very uplifting and a little needed for me to relax a bit while wathching. I must say though I was screaming at my TV for Herman to just STFU with the political talk because it had me on edge waiting for something bad to happen ... Also, Bess played by Zoe Kazan AKA Andrea Martino
It made me very uncomfortable the entire time. Am I correct in believing that the dude who dropped the "If this was the south. you would be out back riling up niggers" line was Henry Ford?
Evelyn's line to Henry Ford was pretty funny. Unfortunately, I believe the Rabbi is setting up a terrible situation with this Homestead Act.
this show is starting to have a Black Mirror effect on me in that it's a great show, but I hate the way I feel when I'm watching it.
This is a really good show. It’s tense and feels like it’s building to something terrible. I have really enjoyed it thus far. It felt so good when wifey backhanded that shitty teenager straight to hell.
This is one of the better book to film adaptations I’ve seen in a while. They’re doing a really good job.
The two big things were they set up Limbergh being under Nazi control more. They were the ones who kidnapped his kid and held him ransom. The other is FDR won the election, we entered the war after Pearl Harbor and history went on like normal. Once the figurehead in Limbergh was gone, the rampant antisemitism and racist died down. The ambiguous ending of the show is a much better ending and social commentary imo considering current events.
