In fairness, he was calling himself out about calling Masai by his first name. But yeah, he’s been calling GMs “Danny” and “Darryl” for as long as I’ve been listening.
I fully expect them to focus on the Oscars around Oscar time. But doing preview shows, breakdowns, etc., like it's a playoff race is just stupid.
Media people calling coaches/GMs by their nicknames (like Russillo has done for years with people like "Griff") will always annoy me more than the first name thing.
Bill's insistence that every single sports league needs to lean way more into gambling coverage is tiresome, I just don't see how that's interesting as in-game banter, and I say that as someone who isn't against sports betting in any way shape or form. I'm not sure what makes say PGA golf more interesting if one fo the broadcasters says "Tony Finau's live odds just switched from +1000 to +250 after the birdie on 14, Jim!" like....ok? Just seems like a banal way to take in sports as they are happening
i'd be curious what the % of sports viewers who are gambling is I can't imagine it's that high and it's already annoying hearing it beyond minimally
especially considering it's still only legal in a smattering of states. The only way it gets interesting/useful is if you really get in the weeds with analytics and math and at that point you've lost most of the audience entirely, so you're just left with talking heads sounding "informed" by taking someone not in the top 3 of a prop bet and calling it "value" Cousin Sal has carved out a career for himself in sports being the "gambling guy" and he's mostly an idiot. A likable, usually entertaining idiot, but still nothing resembling an expert gambler.
I’m totally turned off by gambling talk. It’s why I rarely ever listen to him and Sal’s pod during the NFL season.
Kind of a shitty thing to throw out there by Kitna. Saying there was a drink player in the huddle was all that needed to be said. Saying “and he nearly had 200 yards” had to have trimmed the possible answers by a lot.
Prematch, pre tournament, etc. Fine. But to clutter up the broadcast with it as if that will increase engagement. No. Bill acts like this is a new frontier (Which is all he ever looks for)...except sports have been broadcast in countries with legal sports betting for ages and they dont do this.
just glancing at the game logs, it doesn't look like it was either of them. honestly it doesn't look like anyone had "nearly 200 yards receiving" in any game while he was the qb there. chad had a couple of 150 yard games. darnay scott had one.
I wonder how much Bill regrets telling the former Keeping it 1600 crew to walk like he's very wealthy so it's whatever, but because he's a psycho i'm sure it eats at him
pretty much, iirc bill said he didn't really want partisan political content on the ringer long term and not an expansion to where it'd be a big part of the site so he gave them contacts to go set up their own shop didn't seem to be on the greatest terms when it happened then as time progressed the ringer dabbled more and more in political content/pods/etc while psa exploded
are you a big PSA fan? I can only listen to it on occasion. they are just major cheerleaders and sometimes it gets annoying.
I haven't listened to a pod of theirs in years but I am always intrigued by Vietor, so I keep an eye on them. Hard not to on Twitter
Two of my guiltiest pleasures are hate listening to Bill Simmons and watching the bachelor, so that Rachel interview was great. Bill is still not quite getting it when it comes to race in media.
They got into activism so I can’t imagine this would’ve been a match at all for simmons or the ringer. That said, talk about missing out on politics dominating pop culture by bill.
I never found this explanation that convincing as it was the party line in the moment. They did a lot of the same shit with the original pod, if they went from 80% activists to 90% that was the breaking point? Bill seems like the stereotypical rich guy who never is content so disagree here. Basically anyone who fell out with him talks about his sociopathic competitive nature and narcissism, which would never be able to deal with the millions he left on the table by not having PSA under his umbrella or at least just as a founding partner, etc.
Bill Simmons, anti-union business owner and liberal activist, ehh. Whatever the % of activism you assign, would an impasse have occurred when psa wanted to go from 80 to 90%? Seems like the partnership would’ve come to a quick end, regardless.
Yall building your own arguments here. He could have just as easily used his capital to help them found the company for a stake as a silent partner. Maybe they declined that offer and that's why the split wasn't real amicable, or as we've learned he didn't like their politics and once their initial podcast contract ended he said bye, either way, missed opportunity to make some big money.
We’re talking about a hypothetical, alternate reality so building your own argument is kinda implied. I’m sure he wishes he could’ve profited off psa. It’s wildly successful and they were under him before they blew up. Edit: I’m here for the Ryen Russillo right wing pod to keep the ringer fair and balanced. “Are we gonna do this thing” would be top tier merch next to Ben Shapiro liberal tears mugs.
wonder what they ever did with the Keeping it 1600 feed, probably just deleted it them taking JJ's feed and rebranding it the NBA pod to keep those subscribers was so sketchy but if they thought of that with the giant following Keeping it 1600 had I imagine they would have done it back then
Somehow Bill blames the NFL on the NBA having the All Star Game even though the NFL cancelled their version of the All Star Game.
There are three episodes still on iTunes from 2016. Two of which are interviews with Chuck Todd and Ana Navarro. Gives you an idea of how far those guys have moved politically in the last four years.
Was gonna post in the nba thread but ringer fans might appreciate it more. Jason Conception is on the latest Athletic NBA show and it’s hilarious.
oh hell yes. I might actually listen to something Simmons for the first time in ages. Lebron is now in the ownership group of the Red Sox.
Lebron is definitely gonna be an owner one day. Interesting to join the Red Sox group now. Wonder how he will parlay it into future ownership
Ryen - “Look, I’m usually pro-player on these kind of things. Players play the game, they don’t own teams. Just have to wonder if this will take away from lebrons focus on the court.”
