A lot of entry jobs are kinda eat shit and grind across different industries, but this seems particularly egregious. Holy shit. Was that what tate was making toward the end of his time there?
its interesting how almost everyone at grantland and post largely had good things to say about bill but basically everyone who has left the ringer in various ways seemed to....not have that same dynamic
Bill had ESPN as the big bad whenever someone had a problem with Grantland. He doesn't have that cover at The Ringer. I have to think a lot of his former employers Bill used to talk all that shit about for years have really enjoyed seeing him eat all of this now that he's the boss and his employees are returning the favor. Not to say those ESPN/Disney people or whatever were the good guys or anything. It's just funny to see Bill's career arc from "always disgruntled employee" to "boss whose employees are always disgruntled".
Tate alluded to it on one of his recent pods. Didn't mention Bill by name but left it for the listeners to read between the lines
Maybe not year round, but between the prep and actual recording time, I could see it if he was doing it all by himself
they definitely did and still do prioritize recording right after games/events/etc to get stuff released so he also probably worked really strange hours
even if they're working 7 days/week (which i doubt), that's still nearly 12 hour days. it's just not possible.
Bill literally still forgets to hit record when doing pods, I imagine anybody who does logistical things for him is forced to go above and beyond the job description
also probably did not help when Tate juxtaposed his situation with Nephew Kyle (who worked less, was paid more, and less talented)
False. Listened to that today. He said that is what Ellen paid him. They did an AMA on his and titus’s pod and was asked if he actually worked for Ellen or if it was just a joke.
Why are you asking me this question? As if I know his CV. I just repeated what he said on the pod. I don’t have additional information
i think the implication is that bill = ellen tate, according to his linkedin, never worked for ellen. he worked for "ellen".
that was an inside joke of their show that he left the Ringer to work for Ellen, he didn't actually work for her this, Ellen was a euphemism for a demanding boss. Plus Bill looks like Ellen.
Ryen was at home punching holes in a wall or punishing a body pillow with haymakers while that staff meeting took place.
he might have been better off just never talking about it “It was an awful week. And the thing that I actually was trying to do when all of a sudden I became a Trump supporter through the media, which just isn’t true—I didn’t vote for him either time. I was saying, ‘Hey, I wasn’t exactly running around in 2008 with an Obama Hope hoodie on, but even I, as someone who isn’t way left—look, I can’t stand any of the politicians. … It’s funny because people were like, ‘You’re just another ESPN lib, but now I’ve become MAGA boy because I said, this awful week, whatever the demands are, at the very least, one of the easiest things about the job is understanding decency, understanding how to be decent in the moment. Sometimes the country just needs a f------ hug and you need to say the right thing and Trump was incapable of ever doing that. So even if you’re a Trump supporter listening to this podcast, I think you have to, if you are of moderate intelligence, go, ‘Hey, it would’ve been nicer if he could’ve just not pissed everybody off in the aftermath of another horrible thing happening.’ And even listening to this, people aren’t gonna hear me. But I was trying to shake the listener, going, ‘Hey, not even as the biggest Obama guy, either, I can understand he would be so much better right now because he would know what to say; he would act more like a leader. He would actually be, as cheesy as this sounds, a little more presidential. And maybe none of that stuff matters and changes anything in the grand scheme of things, but I was presenting that. Then I woke up on that Monday and I was like, ‘Uh, oh.’ One of the New York papers said, ‘Russillo defends vote for Trump for tax purposes after George Floyd murder,’ and I was like ‘You gotta be kidding.’
Ryen Russillo and Bill Simmons should not talk politics. I don't think either have the ability to empathize really well, and both have "bootstraps" themselves upward from grinding talking about sports, into I get paid 1% money just chatting shit about sports. Do think it hilarious Russillo reads books like Barbarians at the Gates and Billion Dollar Whale, and concludes he is a savvy businessman.
Then I woke up on that Monday and I was like, ‘Uh, oh.’ One of the New York papers said, ‘Russillo defends vote for Trump for tax purposes after George Floyd murder,’ and I was like ‘You gotta be kidding.’ But that is exactly what he said at the exact time he said it
Ryen and Bill talking all-nba picks Bill spends as much time talking about Larry Bird as any current player
Bill shitting on Ryen giving Kareem’s scoring record as one of his notable records he still cares about because no one knows the actual # and then reading off a bunch of inane records that no one knows the # for was very on brand. I’m sorry i don’t know how to not make that such a long, run on sentence. Btw I like to shit on Bill’s shitty takes and him contradicting himself in a 5 minute span, but I still like Bill and Ryen together. They have a good rapport with each other.
You're telling me you didn't like the 3000/1000 Club?? Surely it must be a coincidence how every statistical "club" Bill makes up always includes Larry Bird
i don't think people really know NBA records because of how big the numbers get the ones i knew about growing up and/or care about now KAJ's scoring record (no idea) Wilt's points in a game (100) Stockton's career assists record (no idea) Scott Skiles assists in a game (30) 5x5 games Triple Doubles where one of the double-digit categories is Blocks or Steals also, i am really fascinated with the "Lebron" 27/7/7 scoreline where LBJ has never actually finished a game with that box score (though it could've changed recently). In fact, a bunch of superstar players never matched their career averages exactly.
