    Who Is the Young Pope?
From Paolo Sorrentino, director of the Academy Award®-winning 'The Great Beauty,' ‘The Young Pope’ tells the controversial story of the beginning of Pius XIII's pontificate. The ten-episode series stars Jude Law as the complex and conflicted Pius XIII, the first American pope. The cast includes Diane Keaton as Sister Mary, an American nun living in Vatican City, as well as Silvio Orlando, Scott Shepherd, Cécile de France, Javier Cámara, Ludivine Sagnier, Toni Bertorelli and James Cromwell.

I watched it. Some funny parts, but not really compelling.

I'm sure they get into how he became a Cardinal so young and how the conclave voted. You don't need to know a lot about Vatican politics to know that a Cardinal under the age of 50 is extremely rare and an American pope may never happen in our lifetime.

Im guessing blackmail of some sort. Add what you said w someone that's as brash and smug as him - something doesn't add up

The first ep was really bizarre, but in a good way. I'm interested to see where it goes, but I think the wife is going to give up if ep2 isn't better.

Now that it aired - At some point we have to get something more than being just a prick. Is he going to pipe that teacher? Is he going to corrupt the church? Im ready for shit to start happening.

They've made a mistake by making him selectively pious. It would have been a better show if he didn't utter blasphemies but was still a huge asshole.

Riveting? Fat chance a real Pope would be able to pull that off. He's trying to put the Church back to the dark ages. That doors been closed.

I wanted to wait until it ended to comment, because I really had no idea where this show was going to go. And after finishing it, I still don't know exactly what this show was about or what the point of it was. It was absolutely gorgeous, the scenery, the costuming, the sets, the soft glow they had for certain scenes. And there were some great performances, highlighted by the guy that played Voiello (Cardinal Moley). But I just couldn't get over some of the dialogue that just seemed out of place and overblown in some cases.

Also, every episode seemed like it was some weird stand-alone episode which made for very little cohesiveness to the overarching story (whatever that was). I felt like I really wanted to like it, and that's why I stuck with the entire series. But I didn't necessarily hate it, either. It was entertaining enough for 10 hours, I guess. Absolutely ZERO rewatch-ability value though.

    6.5/10

Just finished the show, I thought it was fantastic. I agree with Boyd Crowder that the show was very disjointed in its overall plot arc, but then again this isn't a show that is plot driven like most traditional TV shows. I feel like the show encroached upon the territory of film, in the way that film is the primary medium for cinematographic excellence and visually driven narrative (i.e the cinematic wordless nature shots in The Revenant, and The Thin Red Line). It seemed like there were a lot of moments where no words were said, and it was the visual that was driving our interpretation. It's funny that Lenny decried exhibition so much in the final episode, because I feel like the whole series has basically been one giant exhibition of self indulgent cinematography. Make no mistake, the shots are beautiful, there can be no doubt that they make the show a more unique experience. However, the plot is so disjointed and fragmented I think it would be hard for a traditional TV audience to really get behind it. If it wasn't for the amazing cast helping prop up the lack of plot development, I feel like you wouldn't really be able to call this show a success. Jude Law had some fine moments, Voiello and his Napoli references were amazing, James Cromwell and Diane Keaton were solid as always. I feel so mixed about this show, I tuned in whenever there was a new episode, but I can't point to a definitive why. One of the weirdest and most unique seasons of TV I have ever watched, in a good way.

Felt like I gave it a chance but with 3 episodes left to watch to finish it I just don't really care to complete the season. Kept waiting for them to get the story straight but aside from the visual it never felt compelling. The story of a young dynamic pope taking over seems like a great idea; who thought the direction of Jude Laws character needed to be this off the wall?

Thoughts on the New Pope with Malkovich? Enjoying it so far. The papal conclave in the first episode was great. Malkovich is damn good when he appears in episode 2.

    Love the writing and cinematography.
