Was the thong song a childhood staple? Yes it was. I was just laughed at for positing that, and that is horseshit.

Childhood staple seems like overstating it, but I definitely remember it from that time. I remember the first time hearing it/seeing the video at my friend's house in like 5th grade.

It was undeniably a world-wide hit song, so in that sense yes.

In terms of being a staple for the youth demo, you can make an argument that MTV was in its cultural death throes by the early 2000s as far as music goes, and it probably wasn’t as relevant to that age bracket as it might have been a few years earlier.

I can’t say I ever heard a friend pop it on the speakers when I was in high school, and in the future anytime someone played it, was for the lulz.

Are you under the impression that Thong Song wasn’t a cheesy white boy pop anthem? Like, it was released 3 months after Dre dropped 2001.

Maybe there’s a bit of an age difference here—I was 16 by the time it came out, and I think the general consensus among my peer group was that it was kinda hilarious and a good video, but it wasn’t like we made a point to play it or rushed out to buy the album.

I didn’t really appreciate how fun they were until rewatching Space Jam with my kid about a year ago. One of the greatest title tracks of all time, and it all aged well. Started throwing them on rotation occasionally
