Obama welcomes Super Bowl champs Saints

Great picture if not for the guy on the right:

By ILEANA MORALES Associated Press Writer

    Posted 6 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) - It took one shout of ``Who Dat!'' to get the celebration started in the White House on Monday as President Barack Obama saluted the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints.

The band played ``When the Saints Go Marching In'' as team members came in smiling to cheers and shouts for quarterback Drew Brees. Team owner Tom Benson pumped his fist in the air, flashing a Super Bowl yellow-gold diamond ring.

Obama congratulated the team, owner and coaches in an East Room ceremony. He said the team lifted up ``the hopes and the dreams of a shattered city'' in the wake of the ravages of Hurricane Katrina.

The Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts, 31-17, in Super Bowl XLIV in Miami.

Obama said the Saints' Super Bowl win was huge for New Orleans and for the country. He noted that after Katrina, the Saints had to play an entire season on the road because their home stadium, the Superdome, was ruined in the storm.

``Back then people didn't even know if the team was coming back. People didn't even know if the city was coming back,'' Obama said.

Now, the president said, the Saints proved their team and city are here to stay.

Brees presented the 44th president with a No. 44 Saints jersey. The Chicago Bears fan joked he couldn't get away with wearing it in Chicago.

Coach Sean Payton is also from Chicago.

``You've got to be tough to be a Chicago guy. I make some tough decisions every day, but I never decided on an onside kick in the second half of the Super Bowl,'' Obama said.

The Saints took a risk using an onside kick - called ambush - against the Colts to open the second half of the championship game.

``I'm glad that thing went alright,'' Obama said. Players and members of Congress and Obama's Cabinet laughed.

Brees, in a previous White House visit, filmed a public service announcement to encourage kids to exercise for 60 minutes each day. The team spent the morning in Washington playing football with kids from the Boys and Girls Club. Later, they visited wounded troops and their families at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

``These are big guys with big hearts, and shoulders big enough to carry the hopes and dreams of an entire city with them,'' Obama said.

Obama also talked about the BP oil spill, the latest disaster to hit the Gulf. He was optimistic about the battle to stop the flow of oil now that the leak appears to be plugged. His administration, he said, remains committed to the Gulf's recovery.

The president said seafood from the Gulf is now safe to eat, and the White House served some this week. Team members showed off some of New Orleans' famous cuisine. They served some shrimp to the White House press corps and were sharing recipes with White House staff, including, according to Obama, a 30-foot po-boy that was to be served at lunch.

But before lunch, there were autographs, silent cameraphone clicks and more cheers. Players standing on bleachers in the East Room snapped pictures of the president as he made his way around to shake their hands.

Then the Saints left the same way the came in - to claps, chants of ``Who dat!'' and the band playing their song.

    still a horrible owner:

I like Sean Canfield. He made Oregon State relevant again, and he was very impressive in the skills competitions that I watched him in.

He's definitely better than Chase. It's hard not to be.

I think the plan was to move one of Robinson or Jenkins to safety. I don't think it's been decided yet. I certainly don't mind Sharper and Harper holding down the safeties, but I wasn't impressed by Jenkins at corner, so I think he could be better than Roman.

    - Jenkins is going to play safety this year. He was working with the safeties while we were down there.

    - Canfield has a very smooth delivery, and doesn't look bad. He's skinny though, needs some weight. It's between him and P-Ram for the #2 spot. Daniel sucks ass and is a midget.

    - Payton admitted in his book that he had 6 beers before he made his "We'll be back next year," promise.

    - Jimmy Graham is the best rookie on the team, easily. He's one of the better athletes on the team as well.

    - LB's should be a cause for concern for you Saints peeps. They are underwhelming to say the least.

    - Lance Moore has easily been the best looking WR in the practices that I saw. Runs the best routes, has the best hands, etc.

Those are just a few observations I made from being "sentenced" to Saints camp/OTAs 3-4 times this summer.

That was the same incident I'm talking about. He said he had 6 before the parade/before he made his promise. Probably had more like 8-9. He was drunk as hell.

BTW, speaking of Saints coaches, G. Williams is hilarious. After the first day of training camp, the rookies were running off the field with everybody else's helmets and pads, and he's like, "See, we got mother fuckers out here carrying pads, this ain't Cowboys camp." :nahnah:

Patriots ready for two practice days with Saints
    AP

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- For three years, Matt Light blocked for Drew Brees at Purdue. On Tuesday, the Patriots left tackle and the Saints quarterback practice on the same field.

The Super Bowl champs are coming to town.

For the first time since Light was a rookie in 2001, New England is holding joint practices with another NFL team. Starting on Tuesday, the Patriots will work out for two days with New Orleans, the team Brees led to its first title last season.

"There's going to be a pretty good buzz throughout practice this week," Light said Monday.

It comes at a good time -- nearly two weeks after the Patriots began hitting each other in training camp and two days before the Patriots and Saints meet in their first preseason game.

In 2001, the Patriots were coming off a 5-11 season and held joint practices with the New York Giants, who had lost the previous Super Bowl. Light was just starting his NFL career after being drafted 17th in the second round, 16 spots after Brees.

"It was just a whole different way to approach practice," Light said. "I think everybody was a lot more mentally ready to go. They were really working on what they had to do individually. It's a great competitive atmosphere."

The Patriots won the preseason game after the practices, 14-0 over the Giants, and went on to win the first of their three Super Bowl championships. But the workouts didn't seem to have helped since the Patriots lost three of their first four regular-season games.

Still, players would rather face real opponents than their own teammates.

"We can build team chemistry," cornerback Leigh Bodden said. "When we scrimmage against somebody, it's just our team versus their team and we can kind of build that bond and build that cohesiveness and cheer each other on."

There wasn't much for the Patriots to cheer last season when they were routed in New Orleans 38-17 as the Saints improved to 11-0. Brees became the first player to throw for five touchdowns in a game against New England since Bill Belichick became coach in 2000.

The beating took place in the Louisiana Superdome where the Patriots won their first championship, and they went on to a 10-6 record and a first-round playoff loss.

"They were the best football team in the NFL last year, so we can throw accolades at them all morning," Belichick said. "They're good players, they're well coached. They certainly handled us down there in every phase of the game.

"It's a new year, but we know that they're a great football team and it will be a good opportunity for us to compete against somebody that we know has a high quality of performance, coming off a great year."

Running back Kevin Faulk, entering his 12th season with the Patriots out of Louisiana State, put it more directly: "They just outplayed us, beat us, really beat us."

There are several connections between the teams besides the Brees-Light relationship.

Randall Gay started at cornerback for New England when it won the 2005 Super Bowl. Fullback Heath Evans was with the Patriots from 2005 through 2008. Tight end David Thomas was drafted by them in 2006. All are with New Orleans. The Patriots have former New Orleans linebacker Rob Ninkovich.

Belichick expects the teams to warm up and do drills by themselves before practicing together.

That should give his players a different, more intense approach than if they were just facing their own teammates again.

"It's definitely good to see a different scheme, different offense, different players, different uniforms," Bodden said. "You can bang around with them a little bit and not have to worry about if you hurt a guy, it's not your teammate, and it definitely gets guys prepared for the game."

Bodden tried to take advantage of a similar situation after he joined Cleveland as a rookie in May 2003. He used joint practices with Detroit as a way to impress coaches.

"I was a free agent so I had to make a name for myself," he said. "So I was going out there doing any and everything I could to get noticed and show the coaches that I could play (against) another team and compete at the highest level."

Now he and his Patriots teammates will do it again.

"It gets you excited. You're scrimmaging against the Super Bowl champs," Faulk said. "They're still considered the best so we've got to go up against the best and see where we are as a team."

He's outstanding. Like I said, his explosion out of his stance, his routes, hands, everything is better than all the other receivers the Saints have IMO. Now Colston is significantly bigger, Devery is faster, etc, but I think Moore has the best tools.

I love Lance Moore and have no problem with him starting. But Colston and Meachum have been banged up. Colston is the best WR on the team hands down and one of the best in the league. Colston, Moore, Meachum, and Devery give us one hell of a WR core. And you have to love Roby, Arrington, Harper etc. TE's like Shockey, Dave Thomas and now Jimmy Graham. It's really no wonder this is the best offense in the league. They are only getting better and better.

And I Bing'd Danny McCray to see if anyone else was saying anything and found this:

Danny McCray plays way onto radar
    August, 12, 2010

    By Tim MacMahon
Cowboys special teams coach Joe DeCamillis kept noticing No. 44 while he was watching film of LSU’s draft prospects.

A lot of other people are noticing Danny McCray now.

The Cowboys signed McCray as an undrafted free agent, believing he might be an impact special teams player in the NFL. He certainly passed his first test with flying colors. Now wearing Bill Bates’ old No. 40, McCray defeated double-teams as a gunner to make two tackles on punt coverage.

“He’s an athletic guy that can run real fast straight ahead, strong, hard to knock off his feet,” DeCamillis said. “He’s had a great camp and it looked like it carried over to the game.”

The 6-foot-1, 214-pound McCray, who backed up New York Giants third-round pick Chad Jones at LSU, has also surprised coaches with his performance at safety. He has picked up the scheme well and displayed good range, intercepting a pass and knocking another down during the Hall of Fame Game.

“That’s a good start for him, but we want to see it again,” Wade Phillips said. “We want to see it consistently.”

It’s long been thought that undrafted rookie Barry Church was a threat to take Pat Watkins’ job as a reserve safety/special teams demon. McCray has played his way into that mix, too.
