I think the rules say to pick starting party blind, but I think in a 2 player game you may want to google and see some good starting combos. I could think of a few that paired together would be tough, especially if forcing your wife to play.
It's fun. Once you get the hang of it it's hard to stop. Plus it takes for fucking ever to put everything away lol
Played last week for the first time and it was a really fun time. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Group was 1 guy who was stereotypical Simpsons comic book guy, a 15 year old kid, and 3 seemingly normal people (2 women and a guy) was great, but not sure if I’ll play again ever, was hard to make that time commitment work.
i started playing d&d a month or so ago. tonight is our 4th session. i love it, but i hate how long it took me to play. also we have a ton of people and i wouldnt have it another way.
I had a group for about 3 years. It’s a ton of fun, but we moved and haven’t found time to get a group in a new city.
I am temporarily retired until my kids get a little more independent/40% of my usual group returns from a 2 year job commitment in Abu Dhabi. I would say I'm out for at least a year. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have though. I know Shuffles Game Bar downtown has a weekly DnD night, and Top Deck, the sweatiest and dingiest game store in town (31st and Sheridan) does as well. I would probably avoid Top Deck though.
I play XWing at Covenant in South Tulsa and there’s a few groups that play there. Everyone also collectively rags on Top Deck too lol
Yeah, Covenant is a much better option if you have the opportunity. Friend of a friend runs that place.
I'm currently playing a half-orc fighter with an intelligence of 6. He talks with a lisp, stutters, but is the most lovable D&D character I've ever played. He's Faerun's dumptime.
Human variant monk. Retired roadie/bodyguard for a traveling group of bards. Looks like what I imagine a 50 year old former hair metal band guitarist would look like (beer belly hanging over monk belt, greasy and stringy long blonde hair with massive comb over, personality between a Boomer stoner and a golden retriever). Also since retired, kind of a hobo (hobo pack on quarterstaff for flavor). the place I played at basically runs pick up games, sign up in advance first come first serve, honor system for leveling and gold. They do a pretty amazing job based on their website they run, especially since there’s like 40 people who play and something like 8-9 different rotating DMs. Standard point buy and very limited magic items to be fair, no home brew stuff, only things published by WotC allowed. I dropped cash to help pay for the private room at the place but they don’t require a fee or anything. for me with job, wife and kids, signing up in advance and committing to 4 hour chunks is nearly impossible. But holy shit, it was actually really enjoyable. My group, outside of comic book guy min/maxer without any contribution to anything but battle, was a blast, and to be completely honest not the stereotypical people I’d expect to play DnD. was a great experience, would recommend to anyone who doesn’t mind using their imagination as a grown up and being outside their comfort zone with RPing. Felt stupid as fuck at first but was into it by the end. 9/10 would play again. Definitely see the benefit of a recurring campaign especially with a good group of people, but that’s nearly impossible to schedule with my life. There’s a billion YouTube and internet written guides. It took me an embarrassing amount of pooping time to pick my class and background by reading and watching guides on how to build a character. Don’t regret the monk choice but I think a barbarian would fit my play style better.
Wow, that is really irreverent and different for your first character. You should be very proud of yourself. And yeah, DnD is for anyone that likes shooting the shit wiith friends. It's good fun for sure.
Yeah basically once I picked a class that sounded fun, I tried to think of a backstory and character that sounded fun and different than just like a standard archetype.
I’m way too into DnD at this point in my life. Besides DMing for my kids (which is way harder than I thought it’d be) I listen to way too many DnD pods which I find wildly entertaining
Which ones? I watch/listen to critical role and Acquisitions Inc.. then I’ll catch WOtC’s livestream when they drop a new set
It's a very small time commitment compared to Critical Role, around an hour per episode, first campaign wrapped in 67 episodes iirc
so I started with AQI, then went to dice camera action but that died so I went to high rollers and once I caught up with that I started critical role (waited so long because they didn’t put their stuff on podcast for a long time). Crit role is fucking amazing, I started on season 2 and am currently catching up on Vox Machina. Can’t wait for the animated series to start
He also has very good players. I’m sure there are DM’s at or even above his level, but it’s all about just having fun at the table.
Nailed it. My boss’s boss was in the room and said I was outstanding and he couldn’t believe how well I did. I’m choosing to take that the right way and not that he had very low expectations.
I've been playing a lot of Suburbia lately - it's a quick game the wife and I can play while watching TV. I also played another game of Root with one of the new expansions, I've only played it twice but I really enjoy Root. I also played a new game called Parks, its basically you're a hiker exploring all the national parks. It's pretty simple, but fun, and great artwork. A guy I know got the game Kings Dilemma, and it's supposedly a 15 game legacy style game that we're going to start up soon. I don't know much about it, but I always enjoy legacy style stuff.
I've still never played anything DND related but I'm very much intrigued. Not sure I can make the time commitment yet, but maybe in a few years when my daughter is older.
Someone set up a TMB dnd game on roll20. Also started listening to TAZ based on this thread and started off a little weak but there’s a lot of bits I’m literally laughing out loud
They're on their third campaign. I would start at episode 1, campaign 1 (balance is the campaign title). It does start slow because most of them had never played before but it's consistently very funny.
Once I catch up on CR (currently on Ep 73 of Campaign 1), I'm going to start on TAZ. They're making an animated series for that too
It’s one for me, but that’s because it started at the hero levels and only grew. We are just now getting to the fun levels of campaign 2 and even then there seems to be a lot of wrapped up story lines.
