The DM of our D&D group has moved on to greener pastures, and so we've been transitioning to Gloomhaven with pretty good results. I definitely miss the open nature of D&D, but I can't deny that Gloomhaven moves a lot smoother.
I've played neither. If I ever started something similar, I don't know which of these 2 I'd choose, but I'm leaning Gloomhaven unless convinced otherwise.
Played Orleans for the first time yesterday - really like it. Worker placement/deck building type game. I've been playing a lot of Wingspan and Scythe lately - those seem to be my favorites at the moment.
Yeah, but even with fightclub the difference in building a character vs not having to build a character seems pretty significant
Picked up several games recently: Hive - great 2 player game. It's basically a less intense version of chess Love Letter - Didn't really get into this one. As a 2 player game, it seems like pure luck of the draw The Mind - basic game of playing cards in number order but you aren't allowed to speak or gesture. It's really tough at first but pretty fun once you figure out how to read the people you are playing Camel Up - good group/party game. Players take various bets on a camel race, then roll dice to move the camels. It's a mix of luck and understanding probabilities and with the right group (or amount of alcohol) people get really into every roll of the dice
A friend of a friend is trying to get a full group for Twighlit Imperium, I've never played it - what can I expect besides about 6-8 hours?
best thing to do is watch some tutorial videos - get an idea of how things move and then the basic strategy. it's also REALLY helpful if you choose/assign races ahead of the game so that you can read a guide on how to best play that race. It's a really good game as long as everyone's into it - if you have one person slacking then it'll stack up the person closest to them...sort of like RISK or Diplomacy, etc... I really have enjoyed it though the 3 times I've played a full game!
Looked to see if there was a Watch It Played video of it, but there isn't. Rodney does probably the best job of explaining the more complex games that I've seen.
Target buy 2 get 1 free https://slickdeals.net/f/13125799-target-buy-two-get-one-free-all-board-games?src=frontpage
Going to take advantage of this, just need to figure out which games to buy. After a quick search, here are some of the leaders in the clubhouse. Spirits of the Wild Azul Bob Ross Art of Chill Codenames Splendor (Love it, and play it on my phone often) Santorini (Haven't seen it yet, but assume it's there. I've bought a Santorini at a Target before as a gift) Viticulture (Already have Agricola, and no one I play with loves worker placement though() Expedition Zetta (though that's a high effin price) Eldritch Horro Scythe 7 Wonders/7 Wonders Duel Dixit Sheriff of Nottingham Citadels Tsuro (For my nephews) Islebound Five Tribes Diplomacy (Never played this one actually, but it's probably not going to make the final cut) Elysium Roll Player Blood Bowl Power Grid This is only through 11 pages of the strategy section (and about 2 hours of watching reviews and researching all of these). FML. Is this game an option? I see an expansion in the list, but don't see anything about a sale when using the link below. https://www.target.com/p/ancients-6th-edition-board-game/-/A-76084817
Might double up and get 6... Great way to get my nephews presents for Christmas. For them, I think definitely Tsuro, and not sure what other one would be good. They are like 7 and 9.
I have - Azul, Codenames, Santorini, Scythe, 7 Wonders / Duel, Sheriff and Citadels. All of those are great games.
For the first order, that wasn't for me, I did Islebound, Bonk (for a 7 year old -- it's a newer/better version of Crossfire from the 80s/90s), and Tsuro. The next 3 will be Scythe, Duel, and maaayyybe Citadels. If not, it might be one of the more obscure ones on my list above.
Noted. My issue is that I have enough party games (I think). Bang!, For Sale (4 or less -- it's great), Sushi! Go Party, Jackbox Party Packs 1-4 (on XBox when I'm home -- this wins every time), Cards Against Humanity, and F**ctionary.
Played Twilight Imperium for the first time last weekend, I never thought that would be a game I was into but I have to say it was pretty great. I couldn't play it often just because of the time commitment, if I have that much time to play some games I may rather get a few different ones in - but I could see a few times a year playing that. Also, a group and I have been running through the Rise of Fenris campaign for Scythe, and it's a lot of fun. If you like Scythe and have a group of friends to run through it with I can't recommend it enough.
Played this weekend. Was a big fan, and highly recommend... I played it with folks that weren't hobbyists, and despite the learning process, they still loved it. The thing I loved about it was all of the different mechanisms it uses. Somehow, it's only #718 on board game geek, but I think it plays more like a top 100 -- no idea why or how it's so low.
I received my copy of Tapestry last week, have played it twice with the wife at just 2 players. I really like. I know it's getting a lot of flack online for being too heavily based on your civilization, and the tapestry cards but I don't get that. So far we both really like it - really looking forward to playing it at a higher player count.
https://deadline.com/2019/10/board-games-concourse-media-afm-trailer-gamemaster-1202768049/ my friends made this
Won my first meaningful game of Catan on Sunday. I've won playing online and with people who aren't great at it before but the guys I beat Sunday are pretty good and have been playing a lot longer than I have. I did it with my longest road being maybe six pieces and I was totally blocked from the jump
Just here to say Ticket to Ride is really enjoyable. I'd play every night if everyone else was into it. Also have Pandemic which we didn't crack open yet but looking forward to it.
Once you get a few games of Pandemic under your belt look into Pandemic Legacy- that was one of my most enjoyable board game experiences. Sure - I don't have the time now, but one day I'd like to give it a shot.
Has anyone played Terraforming:Mars yet? Might take the Gloomhaven leap. Or Scythe. May came down to what's a better value.
yes to all 3, pretty different games though. Gloomhaven is awesome but it’s hard to get to the table unless you have the same group that can commit to a few hours per session pretty regularly.... I think there is a new not quite as deep Gloomhaven coming out terraforming is an engine builder with little player interaction and it kind of feels like a cheap game but it’s a lot of fun. Scythe is my most played game- it seems like a lot but once you play a couple it’s very straightforward. can’t go wrong with either of those just kind of depends what you’re looking for.
Just bought this because I think it's a nice gift for someone with a lake house. Don't know anything about the game, but the reviews are strong.
Depending on where you live, some stores that sell DnD/Gaming shit will run games where you can just show up and play. Might be a good way to find a group.
There's also roll20 and other online places where you can find a group. Just buy the player's handbook and have a read.
Theres also lots of places you can illegally download the PHB if you wanted to check it out before you buy.
