Jack never had to deal with racism on the tour. That has to make what Tiger did, especially earlier in his career, even more impressive.

I'm not a big fan of golf, but anytime Tiger was in the hunt Sat/Sunday I was 100% watching the entire round. Hell, if he did well on Thursday I would stream it all day Friday at work.

Without getting too deep i think jack is a genuine asshole whereas tiger has some personality and emotional traits that didn’t really develop due to his life long stardom. Wayyyy more stories of jack being a dick to people where the stories about tiger seem to stem from him not really understanding societal norms- ex not picking up the marines tabs at lunch. It’s kind of amazing that tiger has turned out they way that he has honestly.

My thoughts exactly when I googled those comments a little while ago. I'd read about it previously, but I'd forgotten about it. Those comments were made in an interview, in 1997. Extremely disappointing.

Michael Bamberger said in his Tiger book that Nicklaus is the greatest golfer ever (I surmise that’s because they attach Tiger’s goal to pass Jack as Tiger’s own measuring stick) and Tiger is the best golfer ever. All things considered, I think that’s a pretty fair assessment.

Thanks! Downloaded it this afternoon and started reading. Very good so far. And, as a Manhattanite, I'm finding the first few chapters particularly interesting even beyond the Woods'. I knew the Earl Woods stories and that he's buried here. Didn't know that his grave is unmarked. And maybe the most interesting nuggets about Manhattan so far is about Griffith Park. It's now a park for little league baseball and youth football, but I've learned that once upon a time it was a minor league baseball field where scrubs such as Roy Campanella, Josh Gibson, and Satchel Paige played. K-State also played baseball there. Anyways, pretty cool to learn that about a field that my kids play at occasionally. <End of facebook post>

I'll readily admit that I'm the typical millennial who is really only a golf fan because of Tiger. These two parts of your analysis stuck out to me. I've always heard that Jack faced stiffer competition at the top, and that's likely true with Palmer, Norman, Player, etc., but it becomes a wasteland pretty quickly thereafter. While the top-level talent was likely less during Tiger's golden years, seems the depth was much stronger, no?

  37. Phil Brickma

You're forgetting Watson, Trevino, Jacklyn, etc. Tiger's biggest competition was probably Els, Phil, Duval maybe Singh and some other Europeans mixed in. The rest were randoms that would pop up in majors, which he was already dominating. Imo, he is the great golfer of all time, but Jack had more competition.

Yeah, I put etc. because I knew it was likely only half the list. It's hard to remember that the current depth really came about as a result of Tiger's influence on the game and largely after his glory days.

The competition bit is tough because one half of the argument becomes “would Duval, Singh, Els, Mickelson, etc have won way more majors without Tiger?” Probably yes. The other side is Tiger also missed quite a bit of time and was non-competitive in stretches. Many of those guys still didn’t perform as well in majors as you’d expect given their supposed talent level or Tour win percentage when Tiger wasn’t breathing down their necks.

Ultimately, Tiger really did save golf. Not just because he was Tiger Woods, but also because his generation of golfer and the generation before his (Couples, Norman, etc) were known to be more likely to fail to close in big spots than they were expected to. Even the iconic players were faulty. It wasn’t a pretty era compared to previous ones.

Tiger, probably the richest athlete at the time, didn’t pick up the tab for the Marines that welcomed him in and entertained his interest in what they did because of “societal norms” he just wasn’t exposed to but Jack was just an asshole.

    lol, ok.

Guess Tiger had dozens of affairs because he just couldn’t comprehend cheating on your wife is wrong due to not understanding societal norms.

Well his dad and golf coach were banging on the side and not hiding it from him when he was a teenager. Probably not the best example but I get your point. At some point you are an adult and accountable for your own actions.

He knew when he got married that it was not ok to cheat.

He had attended many dinners before he didn’t pick up the check for some marines around the time he was in his late 20s/early 30s

I thinks it’s fair to say Tiger isn’t a good guy but he doesn’t seem to be an outright dick all the time. Everything you hear about Jack is that he is just an asshole to everybody. They are both not good people but in different ways.

This is fair, just pointing out Tiger’s faults aren’t due to his childhood and being totally unaware of how a normal human being acts and functions.

Wasn’t always this way too though. Jack was generally known as being pretty endearing back in the day. Now he’s a pompous, ornery old man. Tiger was a bit of a social outcast in his hay day. Now he’s becoming way more empathetic and human.

All I've learned from hearing about people like Jack, Tiger, Gary Player, etc. is that Arnie is the decent dude. 95+% of pro golfers never struggled in their life, silver spoon from day one. Arnie grew up very poor and was the single reason golf turned into a layman's sport. he never stopped being able to relate to the middle class and was forever beloved for it. also, his thoughts on Trump have been well documented by his daughter (said little about pre-presidential run Trump, disgusted by what he saw during the 2016 campaign)
