I want to be very clear here. I thought he would be done and fired for his lips comment. Not bc I was offended, but I expected several of his players would be offended and that’s who really matters in this situation. If the players are offended by his actions it’s pretty much over. Then you consider the fact that this game is one built on sales of merchandise and tickets and a large amount of the fan base is in the Bay Area and Las Vegas, and his time was coming. Those areas pride themselves (rightfully) on being fairly progressive and supporting a coach making comments like he did is unsupportable. I simply asked about cancel culture bc I saw several posts about how it didn’t exist or isn’t really a thing. I believe cancel culture absolutely is a thing and it’s not a bad thing. It is what it is. In my mind this is 100% cancel culture and I am fine with it.
When did it go from people being held accountable to cancel culture? What's the difference in the two?
No. I don't think "cancel culture" is a thing. I think people are being held accountable for their actions just like they have for all of time.
Creating a new term for something that's been around forever like it's a new thing is dumb. It's not new.
You’re using a term invented by RWNJs to complain about people being held accountable for their actions.
Cancel culture would be like firing someone because who they voted for or what their political beliefs are. Firing someone for writing derogatory language that offends/insults basically everyone but conservative white males while also illegally sending nude photos is called being held liable for being stupid.
“cancel culture” is a term right wingers throw around so they can maintain their victim complex when they’re held accountable for their actions. you can call it whatever you want but consider the implications
there is no such thing Lyrtch said the term “cancel culture” implies something unjust occurred. But, that isn’t what generally happens. Usually it’s the consequences of one’s actions. People who are used to being able to get away with anything are being held accountable for their actions.
im glad people, notably our chuddier contingent, just admit cancel culture is a useless term now instead of the moral panic conspiracy people like chappelle propagate i don't believe them, but it means they lost the case
gambler will claim himself a victim of cancel culture when he gets run off the board in the next 16 hours
I’ll somewhat disagree. The people who are being held accountable are those who have been able to get away with shit in the past and that’s why it is being called “cancel culture”.
Cancel culture is a made up conservative universe because they are mad that a free market will not tolerate racism, bigotry, homophobic speech, and hate. They are mad at their precious free market. It’s fascinating to watch.
The problem with the term "cancel culture" is the right had coopted it into a phrase to martyr bigoted assholes.
I think it's just things that used to be ok aren't now but it's still just people being held accountable for their actions.
Do the cancel culture watch dogs not understand these emails spanned a period of 7 years? These thoughts are institutionalized in this man. He didn’t just have this great awakening when he took over for the Raiders again.
against my better judgment, I'm going to engage in hopes of educating you. it's perfectly reasonable to see someone and make remarks (silent ones that stay in your dumb head) about their various physical appearances. it's even reasonable, although sometimes uncouth, to discuss such appearances with other people. where it goes wrong is when the sole trait you seem to identify someone with also coincides with racist tropes e.g. it's perfectly fine to notice that Paul Kim, your Korean coworker, has epicanthic folds (these folds cause the characteristic eye shape that many Asians have), it is not OK to send an e-mail to your friend and say "Kim has those slanty eyes". if the union leader Gruden was discussing was bald or obese and Gruden called him a balding fat fuck then those things, while again uncouth to discuss in an email, would have passed muster when examined because there is no stereotypical association of baldness and obesity with black people.
It actually kind of is for people of Gruden's status and power level. How anyone could frame that as bad is a mystery to me
"cancel culture" is an intentionally vague boogey-man that has been pushed into the lexicon by bad actors with power who don't like facing consequences for their actions. It's the same moral panic that "political correctness" was before it. It has no real meaning and is used in whatever way is useful to those who wish to undercut whatever situation they find themselves in
People facing consequences for their actions having a new term that started as a joke on black Twitter that was then adopted by right wing media to drive grievance among aging whites doesn’t make it anything different than what it really is.
i get its a small minority of this board but still cant believe there are cancel culture warriors trying to litigate that its a thing
Man if people came for me for shit I said that turned out to be 100% true I'd go on TV and roast that mother fucker too.
“This #MeToo movement is going to make men give up on having sex with women.” - Same people complaining about “cancel culture”
It’s a small number of weird or absurd cases that stick and get shared. Nothing specific even comes to mind, but that’s how most panics get oxygen. This is so blatantly clear that he needed to resign, idk why anyone would utter “cancel culture”.
Gruden was an announcer for MNF at the time. Although technically not employed by the league, he was one of the more higher profile non-players associated with the league
I make fun of the whiteness on this board sometimes, but man, when some of them shoot their shot, they dont fuck around.
