"It was short," Ptak says of his conversation with his coach. "It was, 'Joe, we got subpoenaed; what are we going to do?' He goes, 'Well, you got to tell the truth the best you can.' And that was it." Capozzoli's conversation was different, as was his relationship with Paterno. As the son of a coach himself, Capozzoli often bridled at Paterno's authority, and he says he "wasn't afraid of him." Paterno sometimes called him a "wise guy from Long Island." In his office that day, Capozzoli recalls that Paterno didn't mince words. "So right off the bat, he says, 'Todd Hodne is guilty, and if you testify for him, you're off the team,'" Capozzoli says. "So I said, 'Look, Joe'—I laughed at him. I said, 'The guy's got a million girlfriends. Maybe he dumped her and she got mad.' I said, 'I'm just going to tell the truth.' I never took what he said to heart. I testified and went home for a few days, and when I get back, my room key doesn't work. All my s--- is gone; somebody moved it. I've been moved down to this place we called the barracks, in the basement of the gym. He goes, 'You still have your scholarship; you can go to school. But you're off the team.' Isn't that, like, jury tampering? Isn't that a criminal act? But there's no recourse. What are you gonna do?"
irv pankey seems like a good guy. i am sure there are quotes out there about him being a sandusky/joepa truther but i liked this passage
A good investigative story on a monster that played football at Penn St and a lot of justice system failures along the way.
This is very easy to do when the guy is dead and you're trying to save your own ass from looking like a scumbag for hanging out with him. Almost every "friend" named in the story tries to minimize or discount their dealings with him.
Very sad story and tragic what these women went through. I'm somewhat happy that this probably doesn't happen as much in this day and age due to social media, cell phone cameras, ect.
Joe's comments, and in general how society (police, justice system, popular thought) approached rape in the 60s and 70s is pretty abhorrent. How many of those west coast serial rapists turned into serial murderers because of how rape was viewed at that time, is probably a disgusting amount. This article is well done though, even if it some what lazily tries at places to make it about football.
1. That was fucking brutal 2. Joe Paterno was a piece of shit 3. I’m glad we (Alabama) caused him such pain 4. Sheltering people from the full spectrum of what humans are capable of (both good and bad) produces people incapable of dealing with it 5. I’m gonna get fired cuz that took an hour to read
The judge letting him free after the conviction instead of keeping him in custody was a true fuckup. Haven’t finished the story yet, but what the fuck? Also Joe Pa talking to witnesses — yikes.
More recently than that...try watching Revenge of the Nerds without thinking about how Lewis raped Betty
i mean fuck joepa but he kicked him off for testifying in support of that dude. he told him he’s guilty and if you testify defending him, you’re gone.
also that conversation almost assuredly didn’t happen and the kid who got kicked off was booted for various other shithead reasons
Man that was a hard read from an emotional standpoint. The crimes he committed in New York after being found guilty in Pennsylvania would have not occurred if that judge had not released him. While this article tried to center around Penn State this should have been (also) about the holes in our legal system.
their best player in school history and supposed good guy turned out to be an insane and deranged sexual predator. so it’s already started
That was terrible. Paterno didn’t come off as bad as I anticipated but a judge, the one high school coach who kept vouching for him, and a couple others deserve hell’s fires.
Schembechler was a privileged shithead who never even won a natty and I cant believe I felt sad at his death. But I was a freshman drinking the campus koolaid back then
He was also 3 years younger than JoePa, started at Michigan 3-4 years after JoePa started at Penn State, and yet retired some 22 years before JoePa. In retrospect, Bo's heart problems might have saved us any number of bad quotes and deeds.
Imagine being the person directed to check the trail cams to see who is stealing hand sanitizer and instead you see that dude fucking a dog.... Cameras that caught Matsoukas were being used to find out who was stealing hand sanitizer at the state park, StateCollege.com reported.
Now they just need an elderly rapist, and they’ll have the defenseless trifecta. This guy needs to be put in prison right alongside Sandusky.
It’s really something when the sexual behavior of the Penn state university employees is worse than the people incarcerated in the state penitentiary.
