What is TMB's opinion on this?

I'm a good tipper. Always have been. I do feel like it's somewhat ridiculous that bartenders and servers seem entitled to a percentage. Most, not all, but most bartenders / servers perform the same amount of work regardless of where their establishment prices the drink / food. Mrs. Titties and I got into a heated debate about this over the weekend. I normally tip 18-20%; however, due to poor service this weekend I deviated. Mrs. Titties used to work in the service industry and seems to think it's our purpose in life to fund every bartender and server's existence. What say you TMB?

I understand it's the industry and "right to work" etc etc... but honestly, what's the "fair" expectation?

Depends on their performance but I usually do 20% unless they just absolutely suck.

Baseline 20% at sit down restaurant. If they’re good then more (upwards of 30) and if they’re bad usually no less than 15%

Bars, it’s usually $1 per beer and I hardly ever order hard liquor/mixed drink

The $1 per beer thing is always a norm for me if I'm just sitting at a bar having some drinks. I just overheard a bartender talk about how they loathe happy hour specials because their percentage is lower because they wait on people that "don't get the service industry". It made me think about the tipping scheme all together.

I start off with five crispy $1s on the table (arrayed in plain sight). Each time they do something wrong, I take one away. I don’t give them their tip, they earn it!!!!

$1 per beer seems standard. You’re literally putting a glass under a tap or twisting a bottle cap. It doesn’t warrant anything beyond that.

I typically do $1 a drink during happy hour or if I'm drinking cheap beers, and then 20-25% when I run a tab. If my tab comes out light, I'll bump that up to 33% sometimes.

I tip at least 20% unless the server is a total and complete purposeful asshole to me. If the food/service/etc is garden variety shitty, my personal philosophy is that those folks generally have tougher lives than I, so I’ll give em a break.

I worked for tips in college, so I'm usually 30% but I've gone higher before for spectacular service or if I felt like I asked a lot from the server.

reality is this: if you want cheap food, tipping is what we do. If you're prepared to get that 1 topping pizza that used to cost $9 or something and now pay $16 then we can abolish tipping but people usually cry their eyes out when prices are raised anywhere so this is the situation we're in.

If I run a tab for myself I tip $20 regardless and it’s a rule I follow because I become very generous when I drink and that has lead to me tipping stupid amounts in the past. Restaurants I tip 20% unless the service sucks and then it’s probably gonna be $5

I bring extra money to sneak on the table when I go out to dinner with my in laws. We basically take turns covering the bill. If I’m in Dayton, they pay for everyone, if they’re up here in Cleveland, I pay. However, no matter what, I sneak an extra $20-$30 when they pay because they are embarrassingly bad tippers. My mother-in-law looks for reasons to be dissatisfied with the service, making excuses for chincing. I imagine the two of them eat and drink a lot of urine/poop particles in their nights out.

My FIL is always a “I’ll get the check” kind of guy. In the last couple of years, I’ll steal one, but most of the time he grabs that shit as soon as it’s set down and it’s ridiculous to argue over it. He’s also a notorious over-tipper. Like if the bill is 50-60 for the 4 of us, he’ll try and drop another 20 for a tip. The women on my wife’s side of the family are notoriously cheap, so my wife and SIL are constantly talking him out of it.

When someone is nice enough to pay for dinner, I usually insist on taking care of the tip. Not because I'm trying to be nice in return but instead because I don't trust them.

I won’t get into the debate with the ‘what is or isn’t a good amount to tip.’

But remember, if you think these people just pour you a drink, or go and get your refills you fail to pay attention.

A good bartender (and server) is usually involved in conversations they don’t want, being hit on by guys (or girls) that are cringeworthy, have to be on the same playing field socially from somebody 60 and somebody 25.

Making a person feel comfortable in a setting isn’t easy, that’s part of what you are paying for, otherwise, go home and make yourself a drink for less.

I used to bartend full time hours and I still bartend part time when my main job is in off-season, so I'm generally a pretty generous tipper. Even if there's a screw up, I know I've messed up before myself and most servers feel terrible about it so i don't hold mistakes against them unless it's clear they just aren't giving a fuck. That's seldom happened to me, but in the rare instance it does, I'll stiff them on tip.

20 on a 60 is a pretty nice tip but I wouldn't say it's extravagant, depending on the type of establishment and what kind of service you received
