It makes sense, but it’s a bad look unless it’s a dive bar or small town joint. Those costs should be priced into your food.

This was inspired by a next door post about a local Mexican restaurant (that just re-opened15 months after getting destroyed by a flood). I’d rather get that 4% than have each and every menu item go up and add double that cost to the bill I guess. I like that they told her to kick rocks if she didn’t like it.

I just can’t comprehend getting worked up over 4%, especially at a Mexican restaurant.

Not sure if it is still the case but at one time you could call credit card companies and report business that did this and they would revoke their ability to use their brand credit cards. I remember my roommate doing this to a gas station in college over a minimum charge amount.

Yeah it's typically a contract term where the business can't explicitly pass the charge fee onto the customer.

It's like how I know people that will straight up refuse to go somewhere that has even a small $5 cover charge. That's your line? I just can't fathom $5 mattering in the grand scheme of an evening out.

People going to Vegas always bitch about a $25 resort fee on top of the hotel price then go play blackjack for $100 a hand for like 20 hours.

Had this happen to me at the coffee shop on Monday. My coffee is typically 3.10 and I just round it up $0.90.

Accidentally hit the 0 twice and left $9.00. Said "oh, shit" when I saw the screen and the lady tried to give me a refund but I said no and felt bad making them reverse it and said "tis the season"

I go multiple times a week so maybe I'll get my espresso cut in line or something. If not, whatevs

The fees need to be built into the cost of doing business at this point. What are the alternatives. Cash? Most businesses hate dealing with cash and it’s ripe for theft by employees, miscounting, etc. Checks? lol. Also not going to happen. I understand having a minimum charge though and I try to tip with cash because I don’t think a business should have to eat that portion.

Tipping has gotten to the point that it doesn't really mean anything here. When Lady Tegg and I went to Bali, I gave $20 to the bellman and I think he's going to name his first born child after us.

I hate places that add an additional CC fee on top. Bake it in and eat it. The salon I go to next door started doing that and their processing guy said he could set us up to do the same and I just hate it. I'm probably going to a new place because of it.

Tips have gone down dramatically as a percentage of revenue in most markets.

Obviously a large part of that is the removal of interaction between the staff and customers, which sucks, because that's the predominance of the inbound revenue they are expecting.

I was thinking it would be the opposite. I guess more places are doing carry out instead of dine in, which results in lower tips.

Places where I typically haven’t tipped in the past (Jersey Mike’s, carry out pizza) I’m giving a few bucks now.
