Tipped my hot air balloon pilot in Turkey ten whole red blooded American dollars and I was nearly given flight privileges.

first time they reopened I gave a bigger tip than usual. Now it’s closed again for a while, just takeout and I prefer to cook than get takeout.

but when it opens back up I will definitely tip well. Must be so tough to be closed for 2 months at a time and during the holidays too. It sucks so bad.

Technically it’s done outside, on the loading dock, preferably where no one can see...or maybe where you can be seen, if you’re an exhibitionist.

If there is any individual I'm egregiously over-tipping, it's my hot-air balloon pilot.

Man, that could be an entire thread premise. lol

Running a nightclub podium (deciding who gets in or doesn't, table placement, etc.) in LA was nothing if not continually entertaining.

People wearing 30k watches losing their minds at a cover charge.

Go somewhere and run up a $200 tab and that's no problem but god forbid the venue has a small cover and we get to have good music. It's weird.

Our well cocktails were $18 before tax and service charge.

But that cover was just a bridge too far for many.

I think that’s a little different than paying a $5-10 cover for live music at a local bar. If I’m paying $20-$25 per cocktail, I’m probably not going to want to pay an additional cover charge for the privilege of paying those prices.

You should probably drink less, that would help you not being so cheap

Maybe my point wasn't obvious - I was trying to relay the hilarity of people flipping out about a $20 cover and then paying over $20 per drink.

But yes, I agree with your assumed point.

A lot of places (including ones I've operated) are only able to have bands and DJ's based upon cover charge revenue.

Yep. I ran a nightclub promotional company in college. We always went back and forth on when and how much cover to charge. Because our clients were mostly rich college kids or young professionals, we wouldn’t charge cover if they got there before 11 because we would make the money back from our cut of the bar. If you showed up after 11, you were paying cover unless you had a table though. On nights when we would hire national djs, everyone was essentially paying cover because the table minimums would be higher to help defray our expenses.

That’d be a weird thing to make up. It was fun when I was younger, but it got old really fast having to go to the same places every thurs/fri/sat nights.

For those of you who don’t know much about open table

a lot of restaurants don’t let open table have available times on Friday and Saturday nights because they figure they’ll be full anyway and don’t want to pay open table fees

so, if you’re looking for a reservation on a busy night try calling the restaurant even if open table says no availability

I don't really care about how much, I just hate being screwed over. I got screwed out of $50 once at a restaurant and I refused to ever go back and turned thousands of dollars of business away from them over the next five years.

    Resort fees grind my gears

nah, I don't review things online typically. I cut a work catering order from them and just told my friend group (some where there and were also screwed when it happened) and it went from a typical stomping ground for us to a place we never visited. Congrats to them on stealing the $50 though
