Santiago or Ivory by Michael Resnick. They’re heavily allegorical science fiction meets American frontier tall tale-ism with a scathing undercurrent of criticism towards African colonialism. Santiago is the swashbuckling popcorn movie novel and Ivory verges more on high lit.
