Hello everyone, not sure if you’d be able to help me. I’ve decided that I’m gonna start playing regularly at the local poker rooms. I’ve only ever played online and home games. I used to have a friend who would go to the tables, but he threw clubs like a child on the golf course so I ended the friendship. I only work 3 days a week so I thought I’d start to devote At least one day a week to playing in person at the tables…you know assuming I can break even or don’t lose my bankroll that I’ve allocated for it. Just curious if anyone also plays live in a poker rooms and have any suggestions or tips to get started.
I play live fairly often, at least once or twice a month with a fairly large group of friends. Haven’t gone to casinos much since Covid because of all the non vaxxed meth heads blowing cigarette smoke all over the place. with regards to playing style… imo it depends on if you’re going to the same casino or not. If so, you’re gonna need to switch it up a bit with aggressiveness or playing tight/premium hands. There’s a lot of regulars and people that play together. Not sure what kind of bankroll you’re working with… but set yourself a limit the first few times you go until you get a feel for live poker. If playing 1-2 NLH or 2-5, I’d just stick with a couple hundred until you get a feel for it. Pay attention to when you’re in the kinda, don’t fold out of turn, don’t act too quickly and don’t talk with anyone. Don’t get greedy and try to go for huge paydays. You get up a few hundred, see a couple more rounds of blinds to see if you get a premium hand and then walk away and go grab a beer and a steak and go home. For tournaments it depends on the tourney and blind structure. If there’s re-buys and all that shit. Most important advice: don’t get absolutely shit-hammered like blind dog and piss yourself and get kicked out
I’m not sure what kind of tables they’ll usually have, but was thinking I’d generally like to play a 1/2 cash games, with the intent to play all day but have the option to cut if I want too. Play style Im usually more of a trapper than pusher. I have rules for hands I’ll play, and don’t usually deviate and try always to get the thought out of my mind, if I had just played that hand etc. I wish i had a regular card night with friends but it’s usually a once a quarter thing. I don’t usually lose at the gone game, but know I’m most likely going to for a time. also I don’t drink anymore so don’t need to worry about that .
