Winds were certainly hitting 50+ on the 10th and 11th, and once I got over to peak 6, they shut it down before I could make it up. Imperial was also down most of the time, so never made it. It snowed for 24 hours into the 12th, and I finally got to the top of peak 6, and visibility was pure shit, but it was a hard work blast. Probably got 6+ inches, yet epix mix and weather channel said zero. Very odd. My 9 year old did very well for his 1st time skiing. Wife and 6 year old struggled with altitude sickness. Wife did pretty well for snow boarding for the first time in 20 years, but she might switch to skiing after seeing how much easier it is to move around on skis with poles. We all loved the town of Breck, the convenience of staying at the Village, almost zero waits on slopes, damn good food, Green Dragon, so it was a major success. Cant wait for next year.
vail was amazing Thursday. Did breck yesterday and it was good. About to head out to Breck again shortly. Snow much better than I expected.
Fall snow can be a bad thing for the snow pack as that base layer becomes incredibly unstable . You want the snow to start and not stop or oddly you want it to melt off. That said, there are whispers on a nice clipper in the 14 day for Utah and the Rockies that could kick this thing off nicely. We’ve got peak fall colors right now in park city.
Going to Salt Lake City for a conference in mid-November. Going to go out the wknd before the with gf. I remember one of you lived in the area when I went skiing out there a couple years ago and head good suggestions for the PC area. Any suggestions on what to do there in mid-november? Would we need to rent a car to get to PC and hike if we went that route, or Uber is easy? Anything else in downtown SLC we should be doing? She will only be with me for a couple days.
Mid November is an awkward time of year here in PC. A lot of the Main Street restaurants close from about now until thanksgiving. Hiking options can be limited due to the (hopefully) snow on the ground. And you’ll miss the fall colors as we’re just now hitting peak Aspen trees turning. Uber/Lyft are readily available, but may be marginally harder due to the shoulder season. An Uber to Main Street to downtown slc would likely run about 40-50 bucks each way. Having said all that. If it’s snowy on the mountains, but dry lower down, there are tons of local hiking trails around the PC area that would be beautiful to enjoy, the Utah Olympic park is always a cool place to visit no matter the time of year. When it comes to slc, if you’re staying in downtown there are a lot of good bars and restaurants down there. The area is growing like a weed. The jazz will stink this year, but their games are always fun, and tickets should be cheap? Go to the red iguana
Love CB. Find your way to back bowlsvia the T bar. Spellbound and Phoenix are pretty epic if you are willing to hike for 10 min. That and Bannana funnel chutes are very cool. There is some insane shit out there too so make sure you know where you are once you get up high. As for town, not sure you can really go wrong. On a blue bird day, it’s worth it to leave the mountain a little early to get down to town and sit outside in the sun with a draft beer. One of my favorite feelings in the whole world, CB or elsewhere. Every time I’ve gone we drink at Eldo Brewery (second floor patio) and Public House.
No thoughts on ski season, but just got back from a weekend trip. I have bar/restaurant recs if you want them, but honestly if you just base it off google map reviews, you'll be aight
Thanks fellas - much appreciated I'm a single black / blue type skiier so probably no chutes for me. Paddy Murphy how would you rate Phoenix and Spellbound in terms of difficulty? Looks like all double blacks which I have not tried before - I'm like right on the cusp
If single blacks are the upper end of your skill range, these are probably a bit much. Mostly because there’s no way out once you are back there. I do think that if you can ski blacks you can get to double blacks pretty quick if you want. Mostly just about being patient with your line and trusting yourself enough to put your weight out over your skis in the steeps.
we are doing Tahoe again. And maybe throwing in a Crested Butte trip. Whistler is definitely on the list for 2023-2024. maybe just a long PNW snowboarding trip.
In regards to traffic, how dumb is the idea to wake up at 5-6am on 12/10 in Denver and then drive to Breck?
Not that dumb? Should be limited traffic if you leave at 5, maybe a little denser by the time you get to highway 9 if you leave at 6.
Think it’ll come down to how the weather is too. Traffic shouldn’t be so bad, but if there’s any sort of weather it likely will be
I do that pretty much all season. Very rarely do I splurge for lodging or get lucky enough to have someone offer me a place to stay. I'd set that alarm for 445 / 5 tho.
you may be clear in December, but I have seen enough I-70 traffic to tell me it is worth it. Rather safe than sorry.
Probably spending the holidays in Canmore/Banff. I swear to god if the in laws insist again on not skiing at Sunshine or Lake Louise for one day and just sitting inside playing cards I will poison the maple syrup.
think I am hitting the slopes for the first time sunday. Will also probably go 2-3 times before Xmas. can't wait
100 inches in Jackson already. Two trips to Jackson on the books (5 days at JH, 2 days at Targhee) and a quick weekender to Alta Snowbird. If there is a good storm in the next two weeks I may sneak a few Copper days in the week before Christmas. Just need a handful more runs to open up to make 1.5/2 days enjoyable and worth the travel.
mountains in Colorado have been getting good snow this week and will this weekend. Vail is at 74 inches of snow so far. Breck is at 69 (nice).
If anyone needs a skiing buddy this winter holler. I have ikon again this year so will be hitting copper regularly on weekends
Still trying to plan my wk out west this year. Going to be a guys trip of snowboarders. Just looking for some decent snow, good restaurants, and a good hang. Have done all the usuals that are closest to Denver and Park City lately. Anyone got any feedback on Crested Butte? Thinking there, Whistler (havent been in 7 years), or probably something near Denver since there are direct flights there.
On the list. Buddy in my group went last year and loved it. He mentioned Crested Butte as being similar, but easier to get to.
