yes hello, I will be honeymooning in steamboat in a month. can anyone tell me if this is a good idea for 2 people who have never skied? I kind of like the all-inclusive idea (school, gear, lift tickets, etc.), but I have no idea what I'm doing. It costs $449/per person. COMPLETE 3 LEARN TO SKI Skiers-Level 1 Ages 16 and up This premier ski package is for First Time Skiers. Everything is included for three full days of instruction, including gear rental, and lift tickets. Guarantee success! This program will have you skiing on green runs or your lessons are free until you do. Learn to Ski Package runs every day throughout the season. 10am - 3pm daily Lesson tickets valid 3 consecutive days Maximum of five students per instructor
I only needed one half-day lesson to be functional on greens. I was a kid when I learned though so probably different for adults. You might want to check if you can get a better deal on the other stuff and then only pay for lessons as you go? Edit: lessons could be cool too I guess for the social aspect if you meet other people in the same boat...
If you've never skied before the worst thing you can do is do it and not take lessons. That looks like a good deal, but I would want to just ski solo for part of the day too
On their website a 3 day lift pass is $447, so you are getting free lessons and rentals compared to that price. Now, you can always get discounted lift tickets but even if you dont use all the lessons I dont think you are coming out behind compared to just your lift tickets and rentals.
Love Jackson Hole. Did you have enough snow to hike and ski the headwall when you were there? Really easy hike to an area that typically had better snow than the rest of the in-bounds runs. Right above the top of the gondola Or did you ski Rock Spring bowl? OB right off the Hobacks. God, I need to get back there.
Great questions... I didn't hike, so no to that one. I know it's lame, but if I haven't skied a mountain much I'd prefer to not hike. Hiking in powder in ski boots at that elevation winds the shit out of me. I think I mostly stuck around the top of Sublette. Hit a few cliffs off Bernie's. We also hit pretty much everything off of the Thunder Down Under lift. First day was pretty crunchy, 2nd day was about 2ish inches, 3rd day was about 30 inches.
Completely understand, I typically only hiked the headwall when the rest of the mountain was a little icy. You could always find some powder patches in the trees. Thunder and sublette are great lifts. Both quick and a good bit of vertical rise. Incredibly jealous of the 30" day. Don't think I ever got more than about 18" in one night when I was there.
Learning to ski on a honeymoon? Ballsy my friends. I don't know if I'd do that per se, but it does look like a very good price. Keep in mind that ski school will be awful with a huge group, and 3 days of that shit would be unbearable. I couldn't handle it as a child, I couldn't imagine how miserable it'd be as an adult. That said, if you've never skied, 1 day in ski school would probably be very helpful. After you feel comfortable on greens and and some blues I think private is the way to go. If you don't take the package, for ski rentals, my favorite guys to use are Ski Butlers or Black Tie Ski Rental... I use the latter every time I'm in Steamboat and they are quite literally the shit. They will bring everything to you, so you can get your skis fitted without the hassle. All you have to do is order in advance. Perfect company to use for a honeymoon imo (We used Ski Butlers in Jackson Hole, and Black Tie in Beavercreek the last 2 weeks). See what the price of that would be per person for 1 day of adult ski school + black tie + lift tickets, and compare.
It started snowing the 2nd day, and then turned to really light powder by the end of the day. Didn't stop until the next night, so I think we woke up with 2 full feet and then got another 6-12 throughout the day. Man, that 30' day was great snow, but my intermediate friends and below had no prayer skiing it effectively (and they all had Soul 7s). If someone ever says "I love thick powder, but hate bumps" you know they are lying. My best day was definitely day 2. Drank a bunch of beers at the Casper Lodge and then when balls out on the Mountain. Great, great day.
Haha, this could not be more true. I'm so out of shape right now that I doubt I could effectively ski 30" of powder.... Shit I'd probably struggle in 18"
Gotta go get powder ski demos to help. Have them set your bindings back instead of neutral to help keep your tips from wanting to nose dive
Oh, I know. I'll typically ski a new pair of demo's every day i'm out West. I was just referring to the fact that my thighs are going to be on fire if I tried to ski deep powder right now. Downside of a desk job
If I hadn't gotten arthritis this december/january I'd be at aroudn 15 days on the mountain by now. Kinda pissed. I guess 7 is still pretty good so far
I have mammoth season.. Will do epic next year after skiing northstar.... Surprised out how awesome it was.
This dry spell in Tahoe is killing me. Blue Bird Groomer Days are legit, though. Get to the parking lot a little early, smash some beers and smoke a little ganj and you're set for the morning. Trying to get out Friday before my pass is Blacked Out for the weekend.
Mt Hood was in the path of that freight train storm that came through in December. Bend got it pretty good too, but I saw something the other day that claimed Meadows had the 4th deepest snow pack in North America. Come on up for the weekend.
Shoutout to user OZ for the recommendation with the Darn Tough ski socks, I just bought a couple more pairs and some kids socks for my mini.
Just leaving Whistler after 6 days. What a mountain(s) and village. So many restaurants and bars. The snowboarding was great. Huge mountain (most skiable terrain of any resort in North America by far). The strong dollar made everything 30%, which was a great bonus. A ton of Australians work there apparently due to the easiness of obtaining visas. For the guy looking to steamboat for his honeymoon; definitely take lessons. Worst thing you can do is try to hit the mountain before any lessons. If equipment rentals are included in your package then that's great. If not, use Black Tie ski rentals. Just used them in Whistler and have used them in Steamboat and Telluride the last three years.
 Got a couple more myself, also have to send back a pair that my finally got a hole.....because my dog decided the first thing she will ever chew a hole in has to be an expensive pair of socks.
Just booked the 3 day school. It's 5 hours of school a day with an hour of free riding after. I figured with a max class of 5, it should be interactive. Also having clothes and whatnot delivered from golden. I'm excited
It's a damn good deal. If you're learning, it is a good bet. The only problem is that it takes one shitballs, unathletic, no talent loser to ruin it for the other 4. If that happens, you can leave early feeling good bc you're essentially getting free lessons.
We got some up here in the WA cascades, but it warmed up last week and has been fucking raining. Good thing the areas have decent pack. The temps need to drop again soon. Snoqualmie is supposed to get another foot later this week.
Yeah, I think a small system is coming in tonight/tomorrow and bringing about a foot by thursday. It does look like we could start to get some constant low temps again as soon as this high pressure ridge breaks.
Bachelor is getting a foot between Thurs and Friday. Headed over the mountain Friday evening, going to break out the snowmobiles and go find some bowls on Sunday
Yep, Squaw / Alpine is calling for almost 2 feet by Friday. Looks like I'm skiing 5 days this week. Took Monday off when all the Bay Area dorks were leaving town and gonna take tomorrow off, too. Come on Miracle March!
Friend was there last weekend, chick said it was -35 celsius. Said it was record-breakingly cold, but that's a whole different level.
looks like it's going to be good this weekend in Bend, but overall the next 10 days are a warming trend with temps at Bachelor projected in the 50's :(
Couple Avalanches at Squaw and Alpine today. Closed a road down and pushed a bus with 3 people 30' into a home. http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2016...ly-rescued-after-avalanche-in-alpine-meadows/
Not much fresh snow on my trip to Vail so I mostly stuck to groomers and bumps on the front side. Took a couple runs down Sun Down bowl and Sun Up bowl plus a trip back to Blue Sky Basin, but for the most part it wasn't worth the logistics of getting back and forth if you weren't going to spend all day back there like you would with fresh snow. Lift lines were pretty short the whole weekend though which can be a concern there. In the past I would do a lot more tree skiing, but now with a kid I didn't want to - especially alone. Cliffs: there are worse ways to spend a vacation than 40 degree sunny days skiing groomers.
Moving into house on Saturday Hoping to ski A Basin or Keystone on Sunday Should be a glorious weekend
man...Killington is shit this year. Zero snow on any of the surrounding mountains or area around Killington. They are hurting. Tons of trails closed. What was open was covered in ice and clumps of whatever they could make overnight.
