Vail is a poorly run company and they underpay all their employees. My friend works there. I always buy an epic pass
Maybe my best two consecutive days ever. Heavenly was way warmer than the forecast said. Galaxy bowl trees were awesome
that’s why I bet on it to go up. Terrible run monopoly that mistreats employees is usually Wall Street gold
Insane that people do not wear helmets, no matter how good they are. Got absolutely rocked for the first time ever today by an older guy zooming out of the trees at a horizontal angle. I was on a downslope going straight down so I fell for a bit and my head hit the snow. But I was able to bounce right up and he apologized. If I was too cool for school like the dozens of people I saw today, I’d been fucked
Was a young teenager going out skiing. Didn’t think i needed a helmet. Fell hard the first day on a trip and my head bounced off a patch of ice and I got knocked the fuck out. I don’t even remember skiing that day at all. Worn a helmet everytime since. My mom had me ride up a lift on one of the last days to take a Xmas card picture. To this day my older brother has that picture on his bedside or dresser. My mom asked him why he always kept that picture with him, he responded because of how pissed off i looked in the picture.
Going to bend Oregon Friday. I’m excited. I have a a good base layer jacket. Renting board, helmet, shoes. Borrowing bibs and jacket, goggles. Guess I just need socks and some base layers and socks?
Sorry I just saw this - I assume you’re going today? My buddy was just there on Saturday and had a blast, but I typically do Northstar, Heavenly and Palisades. Haven’t been to Kirkwood in years.
Ya I’m going here in just a bit. My friend goes regularly and gave us some insight. I’ve heard it is quite the advanced mountain, forward to going for the first time.
You won't need much on Bachelor on a sunny day. It warms up real quick. Splurge on a good pair of socks though. I love my Smartwool ones. One of my first mistakes when I got into it was wearing multiple socks to deal with the cold instead of just one high end pair. You'll lose circulation, especially on rental boots that aren't custom to your feet.
If you’re in California, absolutely. It doesn’t get that cold here. If it’s somewhere very cold then insulation might help. Versatility of layering is generally a good thing, though. Shells work better for this.
I get insulated and then if it is too warm I pass on a jacket and ski in a bib with good under layers
getting to that sad time of year with closure details from some of the smaller resorts or resorts that have to close down due to animal migratory issues. heading up to keystone this weekend, and probably have a mid-april trip to breck planned. Might try to fit in a closing day at Vail. will just see how the rest of things go.
Any advice for best places to watch for usually having best skiing in late april early may? Or is it really just like wherever randomly gets snow?
Different resorts tend to stay open later than others. They’ll start putting out closing dates for epic resorts over the next few weeks, I bet. If you are flexible, I’d pick a weekend and just monitor weather reports. Might be worth doing a free trial on OpenSnow’s app. Check base depth levels, recent snow and predicted snow for the next 10 days. You can either chase snow or warm weather. I know vail has got like 30 inches in the last week, plus more incoming. I also know that Tahoe rules. And Utah has got great snow this year. I’m happy to screenshot you forecasts on from open snow if you want. But no way to know who will get “good” spring snow.
Went to park city this past weekend. First time there since they connected canyons with the gondola. Had some good meals. Went over to deer valley for a drink at the st Regis. Of course I left on Sunday when snowfall really started to pick up. Saw four auto accidents on the way to the airport Sunday.
Hell yeah, that’s awesome. What resort you been to the most? I had day 17 yesterday. Hoping to get to 20
Closing next Sunday, right? Do they close early due to migratory patterns? They’ve been getting consistent snow.
You are correct on close and forest service lease. Snow has been consistent, but temps have negatively impacted snow pack.
Did my third snowboarding lesson today, spent the money for a 2 hour private session at Mt. Hood Meadows. I god damned FINALLY got my balance and was going down the beginner slopes connecting turns.
We're supposed to have more snow than average hopefully in the Cascades because of La Niña. I'm hoping I can get a couple of more lessons in before we take a trip to near Bend at the end of the year. I want to go to Mt. Bachelor for one of those days and not completely eat shit.
building playlists for the upcoming season has begun. As have preparations for trips to Crested Butte, Telluride, and Tahoe again.
