Last real lifting day of the year tomorrow. Not the strongest I've been this year or the freshest(definitely the fattest I've been) and not gonna push for a 1RM but gonna try and maybe do a 3-5 set of a weight I've never done before. We'll see. New year's resolutions list is gonna be long
It would be interesting to hear everyone’s goals for the new year. Any and all fitness related goals are welcomed. For me: Squat - 267.5/589lb Bench - 167.5/369 Deadlift - 290/639lb Total - 727.5/1,603lb total at 105/231lbs body weight. Stretch goals: Squat - 272.5/600lbs Bench - 175/385lbs Deadlift - 300/660lbs Total - 747.5/1,647lbs and that would qualify me for Nationals
Lose an inch or 2 on my belt, damn sugar cookies 600 trap bar deadlift, 545 conventional. 405 Romanian for at least 5 reps. 300 bench 200 OHP Being good at pullups again, used to be awesome at them and 2019 was a disaster Get my ass back in the pool and swimming again Maybe a squat number in there but not sure at this point, I'm more about reps on squats than a big number
I usually set goals by meet date, but I would like to hit 655 kg total this year, which is also a qualifying total for nationals. For old guys...which I’m another year away from qualifying for...
Amen. Having so much messed up and refusing to get cut on has left me in awe looking at the big numbers these guys put up and I just don’t want to get injured now.
Haven’t posted in here, as I don’t compete, but I finally was able to get back into lifting heavier on legs. I know everyone has injuries, but as a stuntman, I find them more frequently and have less opportunity to rest them, so they linger. In the past year and a half, I partially tore a psoas muscle (and erector) on my left side, sprained my MCL in my right knee a couple times (also tore some cartilage), and had a sports hernia at the beginning of the Summer. Coupling those injuries with me doing intermittent fasting (kind of messes with workout energy), has been a bitch. I had to drop straight bar bench a long time ago in favor of dumbbell, and cleans a long time ago, due to shoulder injuries (dumbbell bench has been a life saver for my shoulders). I also had to stop doing dead lifts, to heal up my psoas and erectors. With all of that bitching out of the way, I have been able to stick with high-bar squats (low-bar doesn’t cooperate with my shoulders and low back) and dumbbell bench/incline for my heavier lifts. I don’t keep a log or have any particular rep count I’m going for, I just warm-up light and go up by 20-50 until the weight feels like a good place to stop at. Yesterday, I stopped at 455 for 3 sets of 5, which is finally the weight/rep range, that I started the year at (have dropped 35 pounds during that span, so gains were difficult, and the sports hernia set me back quite a bit). I don’t use wraps or a belt, so I’m considering something along those lines (if there are preferred brands/types, I’d like to know) to make 2020 and on, less injury prone. I’m hoping that belts/wraps might also allow me to get back into dead lifts again too (miss them). I also don’t use supplements much (have a whey isolate shake immediately after lifting), and have been out of that game for a long time. If there are any recommendations on that front (non-hormonal based), I’d gladly take that advice. My only current plan, is to take creatine and glutamine again, once I drop another 10 pounds of fat. Sorry for the rant.
Lurker here Consistency is my goal. I need to apply it to eating well and sticking to a workout schedule.
That’s a lot of injuries to come back from and to move 455 for 3x5 is strong as fuck. Way to fight back, man. For a belt I would go Pioneer or Inzer. They make the best belts on the market and, outside of growing out of a belt, they will last forever. In terms of wraps are you just looking for general knee support? A tight sleeve may be a little easier. SBD, Stoic, A7, STrong would be good places to look there. As for wraps, my only knowledge is on the competitive side and I’m not sure those would be right. As far as supps, creatine and whey are the only ones that really have enough science behind them to confidently say people should take them. Everything else is a gamble imo.
Make an insulated section in my shop where I can set up my cage to do squats in non freezing temps. Also get squat/DL into respectable territory.
Figure out a cure for age and stop getting hurt so my gains can gain Conquer High Bar Home Gym life if I buy a house with a garage
400 DL, 350 Squat, 275 Bench Almost had this in may before I injured my groin. Just now getting back into the swing of things and holy shit did I lose a lot of strength
Thanks for the advice. Might have to get myself the belt as a post-Christmas gift for myself. I’ll give some tight sleeves a shot. Looking for more stability overall in my squat, but never wore a belt or did anything with my knees, so it was never into that was in my wheelhouse.
Ive been fortunate that I'm busier than hell and manage a day or two to keep my numbers. Getting fat as shit but pulled 565 the other day.
Good stuff, man. While I use an Inzer lever belt, I'm thinking the Pioneer belt might be better for you. I'm going to assume that depending on the role, you may have to fluctuate a bit on weight? Pioneer has their own hole design that gives you a lot of flexibility and I've heard nothing but good things about them.
Correct assumption on the fluctuating weight. I’ll try to find a place in North Metro Atlanta that sells them and try some on. Appreciate the input, gentlemen!
490x3 trap bar(PR triple) 420x8 330x13 Romanian amrap some DB leg curls and a DB chest session Merry Christmas to my glutes
It really is difficult to not try to coach someone at the gym. Guy deadlifting next to me, a whole 185#, is absolutely slamming them to the ground. Like, bruh, I know this ain't Plant Fitness, but Jesus christ you're going to literally crack the plates. They are bouncing two inches off the platform. Additionally there are a full fucking set of bumpers with each platform. Additionally 2, the guy literally across him is repping out 465 and making less noises. I know the time for grievance has past, but fuck. The only thing I probably interpret ppl about is being morons and ruining $1,000 Olympic bars and putting them in a rack. Not on my watch, bub The guy acroaa
There was some young guy(actually looked in decent shape too) a couple weeks ago doing singles of 225 (with his belt on) while screaming and slamming that bitch to the ground every rep. I mean he had the bumpers but it was god damn pathetic. I ended up squatting beside him and worked up to 315x3 with my belt still sitting beside the rack. I hope/like to imagine he went home and felt like a little bitch.
I can get on board with shit talking someone for screaming, slamming weights, ruining equipment, etc. I’m not down with shaming a guy just because he can’t lift as much as you do. You don’t know how long he’s been lifting, what’s in his medical history, or what his story is. For all you know, deadlifting two plates is a monumental achievement for the guy.
For me it's not shaming, it's like ur doing it wrong and going to break shit. He's literally rattling the plates massively loose even with collars on
I’m on board with that. It’s why I quoted the other guy. Someone damaging equipment deserves to be corrected and I’m fine with shaming them for it. I was referring to:
Yeah, I was just giving my view. The owner is here training another guy, maybe he doesn't think it's bad.
The slamming shit is obnoxious. The floor at my gym is warped in some places as a result so you have to carefully pick your spot. Gym should fix it by now, but still don't be a selfish fuck
He was on the FSU cross country team (according to his t shirt). If he was some dude coming back from a broken back I’d have been there to yell encouragement but it was a 22 yo ‘athlete’ who thought his 225 singles made him a bad ass. sorry not sorry
one of my first chiro’s did Ironman races, competed pretty well when he was younger too, i was floored when he told me he had never benched more than 135.
I played soccer in college (a decade ago). Last month I ran my first ever 5k ,hungover, in >25 min. I would be embarrassed if I was dropping 405 in the manner he was. But I do I work out at Momentum (formerly a Golds, the local body builder gym now apparently), so it do kinda be like that sometimes.
I also apologize for jumping back in the thread so aggressively, I’ve been drunk in Milwaukee for 4 days and will not starting thinking about real life until the 2nd week of January (at least).
There's a roided up young dude at my gym that likes to do some sort of military press in the power rack where he scrapes the bar against the rack all the way up and then drops it down into the hooks. It makes this horrible screeching noise, and I'm shocked the staff hasn't told him to quit it yet.
First off hensleya is a scumbag for not giving me the sanddune stepper for Christmas. Hope you choke on some coal 2. Im at a NJ lifetime and some guy asked to use the pull-up bars. I said fine I'm only using 1 side of the cables. He pulls out a bosu ball and proceeds to do 1 pull-up then balance each leg on the ball once and then did a 10 sec wall sit. For a few rounds. To my left is a guy DL in the Smith machine.
just got my back adjusted. i was all kinds of fucked up. haven't lifted in 2 weeks and have lost 8lbs.
Btw about yesterday. I don't remember a time I considered asking both gentleman. "What in fucks name are you doing?" The bosu ball guy was rocking a Yale tee. The idiot in the Smith machine was slamming the bar down.
