Defense kind of underperformed from what was expected this year. We had a lot of injuries and covid so idk, maybe just wasn't a good year
The Florida game really hurt Lannings reputation with the fans imo feel like they ran the wheel route like 10 times and he never could figure out how to stop it
The rumor was Muschamp would lay low for a year then become DC. Can he jump straight into DC role with his son on the team?
I feel like a lot of fans also just have completely unrealistic expectations of what a good defense in today’s game. Y’all were decimated by injuries on that side of the ball, and I’m not sure you can really place blame for Alabama or Florida’s offenses doing what they did because they did it to everyone. Just the nature of the beast now.
Yeah I don't know how much a defensive coordinator matters now, especially when your head coach is heavily involved
Well, from a Bama perspective, we were really good with Kirby and Pruitt and then went to shit with Golding. That was with Nick still involved at all stages. Now, there was a period of a couple years under Kirby (specifically 20-13-2014) where the defense was uncharacteristically bad, but we were reforming our defensive philosophy at the time. I think Pete just isn’t really a good teacher and has poor instincts when it comes to game flow.
If I were to make a list of the defensive coordinators in CFB where there is anywhere close to a consensus among fans that they are good, I believe the list would something like... Brent Venables
Even he’s gotten smoked recently though. LSU, ND 1, Ohio State. Would’ve loved to see them vs UNC this year.
And immediately after, I started reading things from randoms online about how he's overrated and is only good because he steals signals.
"We posted last night what we were hearing from our Texas site about the Longhorns targeting UGA defensive coordinator Dan Lanning. We confirmed the interest was there from Sark and that he reached out. Now Dennis Dodd is reporting that Lanning interviewed earlier in the week and is a leading candidate for the Texas DC job. I have my doubts. We have to be clear here. In coaching circles, interviews are pretty intense, with situational questions and philosophies discussed. They are usually done in person. Of course with Covid, stuff like this can happen over a phone now but there is still a difference between a full interview and calling someone to gauge their interest. I am told Lanning was contacted, but did not interview in the classic sense. Of course, that all can change. Texas could put a huge offer on the table. Our sources out there say the Longhorns want a “big name.” As it stands now, Lanning has been contacted, but has not interviewed. My opinion is that he is unlikely to go anywhere as he is maybe one year away from being a head coach somewhere."
I think yall will like Lanning a lot. It makes sense for him to get out and prove he can do it away from Kirby. If he kills it at Georgia and then Texas he is on a fast track for a good P5 job. He will know the saban structure Sark will be trying to implement. Issue will be Sark will let him have total control, and from that he will have to get a lot of his asst hires right.
Appears so, running out of spots to ship him off to. Some of our fanbase are trying to convince themselves that he made progress over the latter half of the season, especially in the playoffs, but I’m not optimistic.
I do think he got his unit better (probably with Saban's oversight and some kids growing up on the fly) as the season went on, but yall could certainly do a lot better obviously.
Biggest thing was just improving on fundamentals, which we did. Not sure how much of that was Pete vs guys simply getting adjusted on their own (no spring ball, limited tackling in the fall) but there won’t be any excuses this year with what we have coming back.
he was getting one either way, I dont think we pinch on salaries. really think this was just which way is fastest to a head gig. His unit should be good again; if he can recruit a good CB off a roster after spring practice. Texas would take more time.
The Pole Assassin makes me reminisce about the rivals days. There would have been a hilarious thread to follow as information was dug up
