Settling in to watch them at COA. If his shitty posting wasn't enough I can confirm that Joe Pesci is indeed a fucking moron because Gorija are garbage.
They arent really my favorite but Gojira at its core is a death metal band. If you're not into that, you're going to have a bad time because nothing I've heard from them has clean vocals, but I haven't really listened to anything from them after 2014ish. I saw them open for Mastodon and I thought they were really good. Their playing was super tight and polished.
Also I just learned the other day that John Tempesta of White Zombie fame is now the drummer for The Cult.
FYI Maynard sounds as good live as ever. Other than hearing the new stuff his voice was the highlight of the show. Was a bit disappointed in the rest of setlist though. Aenema sounded really good and was a cool opener but compared to their other work The Pot, Parabol and Schism are kinda meh for me. Plus I've seen them all live many times. Part of Me might be my least favorite Tool song. Had my heart set on seeing Intolerance as it's one of my favs and was quite disappointed. Since it was a festival and not their own show the no phones policy wasn't at all enforced which meant hundreds of assholes had their shit out the entire time which was annoying as fuck. Invincible is a good song but Descending is far superior, especially live. It's been said a million times but it bears repeating - Danny is a generational musician. Just too good. GF's first Tool show and she enjoyed the people watching. And Jambi. Will def see them again when the fall tour rolls around.
I understand that you need to give 10+ minute songs a little latitude but Invincible strikes me as a little disjointed and rambling. Almost jam bandy at times. Descending sounds much more cohesive and flows better.
Hush is the worst. It’s so bad. I’d be upset if like 40% of a Tool show was Schism, the Pot, Parabola, and Part of Me. That’s bad.
One of the idiot Sirius hosts mentioned that "a new song" is coming some time next month. I assume it's going to be a shortened and more radio friendly version of one we've heard but still noteworthy. Excited to hear the studio versions.
FYI Maynard is on Joe Rogan's podcast today and the band's social media teased that he'll be announcing/discussing some interesting things so maybe a single release is immanent or will be mentioned? No idea what time the show will be posted.
Awesome. Interested to hear Maynard in that format. I hope he's really up to date on UFC and Alaskan wild dogs.
I don’t listen to the Rogan pod but in searching for things tool previously he’s been on there. He’s cool as shit, as always, worth a watch.
Yeah, I listened to both of his Rogan episodes a few days ago. Really interesting guy, and like you said, he was knowledgeable about and interested in things I wouldn't have expected.
I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected Enough to step aside and weep like a widow To feel inspired, to fathom the power, To witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain, To swing on the spiral, to swing on the spiral, To swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.
I'm a really big fan of this Tool on Spotify thing. Lateralus is quite an enjoyable grocery shopping album FYI.
Apparently the artwork was done by a Turkish graphic artist. There's been speculation that the album was going to include some sort of battery or LED light source which kind of corresponds with the work he does.
