There have been some decent westerns on Netflix lately that have come out in the last few years. The Duel Badlands To name a few off the top of my head.
That is a deceptive trait; the moniker “Western” is more related to the country of origin than the style of storytelling; i.e. it’s set in the American Frontier West because that was the easiest point of reference on a cultural level. Space, like a future frontier colony world, can function just as well as an 1870s New Mexican ghost town; it’s all about the order and structure of the narrative and the setting.
Similar to No Country for Old Men. I think I'd classify it as a neo-western or a postmodern western. And I think QT says "Django Unchained" is not a western, but a "southern."
Oh buddy, thank you for this. Just found it on a stream and let me tell you. It's good. Not a western in the same way Yellowstone isn't a western. But it's modern day western. Hell, I think half the cast plays in Yellowstone.
Watching Bone Tomahawk rn hell or high water is absolutely 100% without dispute a western you god damn scrubs
Shoot out scene in Wind River is absolutely incredible. Spoiler When Renner opens up with that 45-70...
I think you have to put a time frame on it, cuz otherwise shit like Breaking Bad could be considered a western. Hell, you could almost argue for There Will Be Blood as a western.(It's not, but a lot of the elements are there). I just hope we someday get a quality Blood Meridian adaptation
I’m of the opinion that westerns don’t just stop happening because of a time period cut off point. Breaking Bad is as much a western as sicario is and I consider both crime sagas. no country for old men hell or high water wind river these are westerns.. stories that are as much about the western frontier as they are the stories that take place within them.
Read my post again. I know Yellowstone is a western. I was trying to say Yellowstone is more so western than Wind River. I guess it's the same thing. I don't want to get off on small technicality. Good ain't it.
I'm debating on whether or not I should try to convince my parents, who are in their mid 60s and typically avoid rated R movies, to watch.
Years ago (~15?), they happened to be in the room while The Ring was on TV, and because there was nothing else to do, watched it with us. After the movie ended, they were pisssssed, and I'll never forget my Dad marching up the stairs to bed yelling to himself "freaking KIDS THESE DAYS" lmao.
Did anyone watch The Kid? 44% on Rotten Tomatoes -- I can't remember the last time I liked one with that low of a rating, but I still may give it a go.
Godless is fantastic. Worth noting that it was made by the same guy who made Queen's Gambit. Jeff Daniels puts on another sterling performance in that one.
jeff daniels is amazing in this. the whole series cast was good imo. Merritt Wever was great as mary agnes
She was good in Unbelievable as well. It was another, somewhat overlooked miniseries. Not nearly as good as Godless, but worth a watch.
