Lol at resorting to some sort of backhanded Sepinwall insult. He's 1 of like 5 reviewers I regularly read for most shows I watch, and I often disagree with his view of shows (breaking bad for starters).

This comment "I am not sure what people were looking for, but I guess if you were looking for this to all of a sudden turn into season one there would be major disappointment." was you speaking for people that were disappointed in the season. I simply pointed out that plenty of people I've seen itt, friends I've talked to, people elsewhere on the internet (ie reviewers) were disappointed in this season for reasons that had nothing to do with S1.

Yes the plot connected the dots, but it did so in such a convoluted way that many people, myself included, lost the ability to give a shit about any of it along the way. My twitter feed was filled with national media taking shots at S2 yesterday and today because the 4,000 word Slate preview was necessary to understand wtf was going on heading into the finale. That sentiment is echoed throughout the media coverage of S2, so I'm far from "speaking for other people" by pointing that out.

I'm not going to compare it to 95% of the shows on TV b/c imo that sets the bar way too low. If we're playing the TO ME game, it falls pretty far below quality hbo dramas and was worse than 2 of the main shows I watch airing right now (halt and catch fire and hannibal). If someone told me hbo was starting true detective S3 tomorrow and it would be comparable in writing/acting/plot to S2, I'd probably skip it.

Yeah that's a pretty dumb view on things. I had bought back in to season 2 re watching episodes 1-7, but that finale killed all that.

But I will accept that nothing could have been written/filmed in 12 months-ish time that could have lived up to the hype. It's like in coaching, you never want to be the one to follow a legend, you want to be the guy that follows that guy. So maybe season 2 served its purpose of calibrating expectations and we can now enjoy seasons 3 and beyond apart from any expectations.

I understand that widespread corruption was a theme, and with that comes a lot of bad guys. But the show was 8 episodes long and how many different bad guys did we have?

    The twins
    The Mexicans
    Caspere
    Osip
    Blake
    Burris & Holloway
    The rapist
    Pitlor
    Tony
    The meth dealers
    The drunk driver

I don't have a problem with complicated plotlines, but the quality of the show needs to warrant them. To be blunt, trying to keep up with everything in S2 felt like a chore and made me put off watching every episode.

Hell, half the fun of S1 for me was coming to this thread afterwards where we discussed everything for the entire week leading up to the next episode. There were some really fantastic observations made by some posters.

My dad had never seen season 1 before so we thought it'd be cool to watch each seasons episodes 1 by 1. That was a mistake and really highlighted a lot of the issues I had with season 2. We watched the season 1 finale last night and when the credits started rolling my dad looked at me and said, "That was a hell of a lot better than that shit we watched last night."

I liked the whole premise of urban industry and government blackmailing leading officials through prostitution rings. That concept and environment was very in depth and believable. It just came down to the acting and dialogue to me that wasn't up to par.

However, I want season 3 to go back to the backwoods of some forgotten part of this country that deals with cults and serial killers. There are plenty of white trash in this country they can use. All those pictures, clues, and conversations that were in season 1 still creep me out

saw it last night and here are my issues.

So frank and Ray this gangster and this dirty cop all of a sudden are gunslingers and go all military ?

How the hell do the mexicans fit into all this ?

The whole thing with Ray having to see his kid, it was so scripted and if you know there is a tracking device on the car why not just take the money out and leave the damn car there.

I thought it was gasoline, and was expecting it to blow up at any moment. Was that a film set error, or was there something going on there?

Before this season aired, I thought there were going to go somewhere like Barstow or the Salton Sea and basically make a really dark CHiPs, or go someplace north and base part of the story off of Leonard Lake and Charles Ng. I still didn't mind the idea of Vinci but they did a poor job of world-building and those fucking aerial shots were so nonsensical.

I think an overlooked aspect of this season's failure is that Pizzalotto is from Louisiana and has only lived in California for few years. He knew the world he was creating in S1 but was totally lost with S2. Losing Fukanaga obviously didn't help either because he seemed to really grasp Pizzalotto's vision.

Once he saw the tracker he realized that they had found him and had eyes on him. Regardless of what he did next he was caught and if he went to meet with mcadams whether by car or on foot he would have lead them right to her and they'd both be dead

I took that part where he's smoking and looking around in the street as him coming to terms with the fact that he's a dead man and formulating his next move

So I am sure I will be chastised for this but after looking back on the season in its entirety.... I don't think it was bad at all. I enjoyed it. Was it as good as season 1? No. But is this show still better than most anything else on tv? Yes.

Ray was dead as soon as he saw the tracker and he knew it. He knew he had eyes on him, so he couldn't just switch cars or run. His only play (after going to see his son and basically sealing his fate) was to get them away and give Ani time.

Sorry, his car versus a big ass SUV? You notice he passed a cop car while he knew he was being followed? That was just bad. He could have lost that tail if he tried (in reality), but the plot didn't allow for that.

Yeah even with a tracker on his car. I feel like he could pull a move to at least lose them for a good several minutes. Especially if he had to drive all the way up north on a highway.

what do you guys think a tracker does? How is he going to lose them for several minutes? Also if he drives evasively and gets pulled over, hes also fucked.

he should have never gotten in the car with the tracker. assuming a guy like him knows how to steal a car (he mentioned doing it as well), he should have just robbed any other car on that street.

He had to assume that he was being watched tho. That's why he didn't run or anything.

I agree tho, if he could have stolen a car then maybe he could have at least lost him.

What I don't get is what he thought would happen to his kid if he got away....they would have totally murked Chad

This could've been his last thought when he was contemplating getting off the highway to go see him one last time. Maybe he wanted to get found and get killed so they wouldn't go after his family.

...which would solve the tracker issue but not the issue of them now knowing which car he is in due to them having eyes on him

Either way he was fucked. And I think after seeing his son and seeing he still had his fathers badge with him and had made friends(he was happy) Ray was at peace with his fate

Imo had he gotten on that boat without seeing his kid he wouldn't have closure and never really would be happy.

He knew him going to see his kid likely would have sealed his fate and he was willing to risk that.

this. i loved that he saw his kid one last time bc despite his flaws, he really was a dude who just wanted to do right by his son and bond with him. he already ceded custody and him knowing his kid was doing well and still loved his dad was all that mattered to him. that salute was kinda cheesy but i thought it was an awesome moment

Whatever awesomeness that could have been possible at that moment was ruined by the predictable stupidity involved in Velcoro taking that exit and sealing his fate. It was so cliched. And the idea that the fat kid would be walking around the schoolyard with that badge is beyond corny.
