This was not a good episode. Vaughn isn't selling me, McAdams looks like an off putting dyke, kitsch was good in the office with his boss but Im already tired of the deep painful looks he gives in close up shots, and Farrell's character as the alcoholic cop has been driven into the ground. Im just not sure where the plot is supposed to grip me. City corruption meets sexual occultism? They're going to need to introduce some serious intrigue into the equation to really get things off the ground and it isn't good that they didn't do it in the first episode. Shit, they were able to do it in the first ten minutes of season 1. I'll watch every episode to give it a chance as an entire body of work but they need a rebound next week.
My bad, I thought the girl that Kitsch pulled over was McAdams' sister without the wig. Stop being mean to me
Couple of things that I expect to be important 1. Missing Mexican girl-she said she found better 'work' up near Sonoma (north of San Fran) 2. Caspere not having his laptop in his house and his secretary saying he had spent a bunch of time up in Monterrey 3. Bezziriddes father leading some Dharma worship church, which was extremely prevalent and founded in the Monterrey area. This is probably a reach, but those that follow the whole Dharma mentality do some fucked up stuff 4. IDK what the deal with the Russians are, but I'm going to guess that them wanting to meet Caspere means they are somehow behind his death I think right now the main themes will focus around kidnapping girls and forcing them to do weird Internet porn. The whole concept seems a little like LA Confidential, but I love that movie so if it's like that, I'm all for it
From reddit Let me try to recap the episode: Colin Ferrell is Ray Velcoro, a detective in the city of Vinci. Vince Vaughn's character Frank Semyon gave him information on who raped his wife and this made Colin in his pocket. Basically its assumed that Colin's son is not biologically his. In addition Vince is helping him legally with the custody of his child by providing an attorney to Colin The city of Vinci is going to be apart of a state mass rail deal with potential for profits for local businesses. Vince's character needs the city manager to help make it progress and secure a deal with, who I assume, is a Russian businessman. Vince's character is a cross of businessman and gangster like qualities. Its assumed that Capser, the city manager, is holding Vince's money. A article in the local paper talks about local city corruption. Vince gets Colin to beat up the reporter to intimidate him to not write any more stories and he stole the information he had. In addition Colin is on the case to find the missing City Manager. When they show up at his house it becomes clear that its a kidnapping. Rachel McAdams plays Ani Bezzerides who is a County Sheriff. She busted a presumed prostitution ring but it was a hazy legal porn cam business. She discovers that one of the women is her sister and they have a rocky relationship because of the sister's life decisions. Later on she serves a notice to a family that's going to be evicted. The wife of the family asks Rachel about her missing sister getting no help from local police. She says that she got some new job and it leads her to a Dharma Yoga/Meditation center. The person who owns it I assume is her father and she has relationship issues with him, I presume. The missing sister no longer works there so the mystery of her whereabouts will continue. Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh who is a California Highway Patrolman. He pulls over a woman for speeding and reckless driving. The woman tries to bribe her way out of it with sex. It's suggested that Taylor arrested her but she lied about him accepting oral sex to get out of the ticket. He's suspended. He's also a war veteran with scars and has sexual problems with his girlfriend (leaving to the bathroom to get hard). Distraught about the suspension he takes his bike and goes for a ride going at top speed and turning out the lights in a apparent suicide but he backs out of it. Where he stops he finds the dead body of the missing city manager. Rachel is called to the scene because its in her county's jurisdiction and Colin is called because he's on the missing person's case to find Casper. Basically the 3 big cops of the show Colin, Rachel, and Taylor meet at where the body was dumped. Edit: (because I got 20+ messages just because of this post) Many are saying that Taylor Kitsch' girlfriend is the missing sister to Rachel McAdams character. I'm not sure if its clearly stated in the episode as I didn't pick that up that she is but its a possibility. Thanks for the spelling correction to Vince Vaughn's character's last name. His last name is Russian as I was commented so it goes along with the business plan with the Russian businessman/gangster at the unveiling party of the railroad plan (which the city manager did not show up to). I missed the part of McAdams character saying that her mother committed suicide.
Also, each character has some form of sexual dysfunction, yes? Waiting for a couple more episodes before I judge it. Did feel some shots were bland, the intro song should've been the bar scene (great scene) song, Colin is a natural drunk and I think he'll be the best character, don't care for Taylor, waiting for more background with Vince, and Rachel is Rachel.
Maybe the episode wasn't perfect, but I'm not sure I have a better way to spend 9-10 PM on a Sunday. Some of you want every episode to be all 5 seasons of the Wire in one hour.
The expectations for this show couldn't be any higher. Thats just the landscape they have to deal with and the magnifying glass is unfairly strong.
Was that the case? I thought maybe they were trying to do some weird shit and the dude pussed out or something. Coupled with the close-up of that weird book she had in her room At the end of their convo, he asked if she liked that, and she said sometimes. Seems like a topic for something other than premature ejaculation. Maybe I'm already looking for something that isn't there.
I'm going with they just had butt sex. There were tons of butts and butt references all throughout the episode.
i dont know they kind of panned over knives and shit in her apartment if i had to guess it was a little rougher than just butt stuff
Maybe. That scene + a couple male butt scenes + female butt scene + the best one-liner from the whole episode was "... I will buttfuck your dad..." = I'm going to assume anything ambiguous is about butt stuff
Thought it was a good setup episode. Looking forward to the rest. I've made myself not compare this to last season, it was just too good.
Guy with McAdams at the beginning was from the Disney original movie Motorcrossed and the guy who got knocked out in Ballers was the main character in another Disney original Luck of the Irish. Both great movies. Thanks for your time.
She'll always be the twin sisters from All My Children- one was normal the other one was slightly retarded. My wife always points her out to me. "I know you're proud of the little girl from your soap opera."
Wasn't a big fan of that episode. Just really felt like work more than entertainment. That's fine as the 1st episode to an extent but it kind of seemed like they were trying too hard to set a mood. I couldn't put my finger on it and then Greenwald explained it as everyone seemed very aware that they were in True Detective. From the music to the wide shots it just seemed like they wanted to force the mood immediately instead of letting it reveal themselves. Combine that with everyone scowling the entire time and it just bored me a bit.
watched last night. episode was definitely all over the place. guess I'm alone in thinking that Colin line was something out of kenny powers's book and kinda stupid. I do like him playing a raging alcoholic. seems to be the only role he's good at. pretty sure McAdams wanted some BDSM action. That was definitely not a conversation you have after premature ejaculation. Gonna take something serious for me to give a shit about Kitsch's character. with the exception of the hot latina being in the frame, everytime he was on screen I was ready for it to move onto one of the other characters. the "i'm gonna ride real fast and turn the lights off" scene was lame to me. Moto people - was it realistic at all for him to slam on the brakes of a motorcycle that's going 100+ and stop in 3 seconds that included swerving off the road and fishtailing... but then just smoothly stop? I was expecting the bike to go sliding down the road and leave him behind and then he just... parked it calmly.
I get that but Greenwald is also the fgt that is on record as saying he "Didn't like" the first season of True Detective. He's always been cunty about this show.
ah well... my question has little to do with what street he was on and moreso the physics of motorcycles and what seemed to be the equivalent of pulling the parking brake while going 100+. I thought he was about to have a real bad time
Actually it was Chris Ryan. I read the recap and just assumed it was Greenwald. Greenwald is actually on board as saying he likes this season a lot
I thought it was a pretty good first episode. Not gonna try to compare it to last season. Just gonna take it for what it is. I actually liked learning about the characters. Seems like Colin Ferrell will excel in this role. All the characters seemed to be fucked up in their own way.
So Greenwald didn't like the first season, but likes this one so far? Seems like he's being a contrarian just for the sake of being one.
so McAdams character likes it in the ass? is that what the guy was talking about when he said he thought most girls didn't like that? and then her sister said something about when she walks it being like two erasers(?) clapping in the wind?
So Kitsch's scars are obviously road rash from the last time he tried to kill himself am I right or am I right
I thought the previews for next week have his lady fiend asking "what happened in the dessert" so I assume he got fucked up in the war
What happened was Rachel was making an English Trifle but the cookbook pages were stuck together so she made half trifle half shepherd's pie
and after reading this post i'm going to assume the russians are all going to turn out to be aliens that have been abducting people and doing butt stuff to them. so guy doing a 100+ mph on a bike, swerving off the road, sticking the landing like a goddamn Olympic gymnast in a gravel/dirt parking lot, is easier for you to believe than a drunken parent with tons of issues beating the shit out of another parent bc his kid's a bully?
