I don't think you put it on the back burner, but you focus your speech and talking points on economic issues. If equal rights and social issues pop up, you treat like it's as obvious as it actually is ("uh yeah...of course we should do xxxx"). But under no circumstances do you just "forget" those issues.

The social issues and economic issues are inextricable from each other at this point, as their motivations are generally the same. Corporate America more-or-less agrees with the social issues and takes pains to market to social liberal causes, however cynical the creation of that marketing is.
