I need the NYT and Washington post to write long stories about the fencing with trump locked in the White House all weekend afraid of the citizens. Will help them in a big way. He makes another few errors on Monday and Tuesday that keeps next weeks news cycle on fire.

I don’t know where else to put this. A friend is now head of school at the school we both attended. It’s a small, independent private school in Montgomery, AL that was founded post-Brown v. BOE. Being non-religious and largely supported by the city’s Jewish families, it gradually became the “liberal” private school, which it prided, but it never really addressed the obvious timing of its founding. He sent the below email out today to all students, family, and alumni. I’m pretty damned proud of him.

Dear MA Family,

It has been very hard to watch all that has transpired around the country over the past two weeks. The painful images of racism, violence and hatred -- on top of the ongoing challenges with the pandemic -- have been very disturbing and heartbreaking, and I know that this has been a challenging and hurtful time for so many including those within our MA community. Specifically, my thoughts go out to our African American students and their families, African American alumni as well as our faculty and staff members both past and present. I am sad for our country, and I mourn the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and so many others who have been killed as a result of racial violence in this country. I also mourn for those whose lives have been lost due to COVID-19. This is a difficult time in our history that will shape our world for many years to come.

In looking at what our country is experiencing today, I believe that we are witnessing the cumulative impact of over 400 years of white supremacy, racial division and discrimination play out in our streets and cities across the country. This "reckoning" - as Equal Justice Initiative Director Bryan Stevenson terms it - is forcing all of us to take a hard look at ourselves in the mirror to see if we are going to be a part of the problem or a part of the solution moving forward. As we all engage in the productive process of community building and reconciliation, this is an important time to listen intently with compassion and empathy to others around us.

Over the course of the past week, I've tried to take some time to process what is going around rather than speaking out immediately, but it is now time for me, as Head of School, to share some reflections on what has happened and to encourage all of us to move forward with hope. I write from a position of humility knowing that it takes the collective wisdom of diverse perspectives and voices to answer the challenges before us. I write from a position of privilege knowing that I have been granted many unearned advantages as a result of my skin color. I also write from a position of hope with a strong desire to help move the MA community, the Montgomery community, and our country forward in a positive direction. With a raging pandemic, growing economic uncertainties, and protests in nearly all major cities, we are facing challenges that most of us haven't seen in our lifetimes. I hope, in the words that follow, that I can take a step forward by addressing where this school has been, where we are today as an institution, and the steps that I believe that we must be willing to take to improve as an institution and as a community.

Our beloved MA has been revered by many as an institution for academic excellence within the Montgomery community for over 60 years. Over those years, we have produced over 200 National Merit Finalists, numerous AP Scholars, and our graduates have gained entry to colleges and universities across the country. Each year, our graduates earn millions in merit-based scholarships to both in-state and out-of-state schools. We have built top-notch arts and athletics programs that demonstrate the wide skills and talents of our student body. Our speech and debate program has been consistently ranked in the top 1% of programs nationally. Our students have engaged in service of the Montgomery community through many outreach programs, our Community Days, and service learning opportunities. Through our ongoing accreditation processes and our accolades, our school has been recognized in the state, region and nation as a shining example of what a good independent school should seek to do in terms of the opportunities that it has created for its students and in the outstanding faculty it has attracted from across the state, region and country. Ultimately, I'm very proud to be associated with this school as an alumnus, a faculty member, Head of School and now as a parent, and I hope that you are, too.

However, we must be willing to confront the uncomfortable fact that The Montgomery Academy, like many other independent schools founded in the South during the late 1950s, was not immune to the divisive forces of racism that shaped this city and community over the course of its history. When we study the stories of the past, sometimes, as American poet Miller Williams shares in his poem, "Of History and Hope," "we like the places they take us. Mostly we do." But we also have to be willing to admit when it takes us to a place that makes us uncomfortable. We don't like to talk about it, but, in 1959, MA first opened its doors in the old Governor's mansion on Perry Street as an all-white school. It was initially designed as an all-white school, MA remained an all-white school for the first fourteen years of its existence, and it was seen by many as one of the early catalysts for the "white flight" from Montgomery's public schools.

Thankfully, much has changed at MA in the decades following the admission of the first African American student in 1973. Our current mission statement, core values and portrait of a graduate create a framework for transcending the problematic origins of our school and the complicated legacy that it has created. As our mission states, our daily focus at MA is to develop "leaders committed to honor, scholarship, service, and the pursuit of excellence." In today's world, we desperately need strong leadership across all levels of our society, and I am pleased that our school is playing an important role in developing our future leaders.

Our current core values further define the ways in which we live out our mission as a school. Those values define the essence of the MA experience and what we seek to cultivate around us:

We create a supportive, challenging and joyful learning environment that cultivates academic, artistic and athletic excellence.

We develop meaningful and lasting relationships among teachers, students and parents.

We nurture, engage and empower each student to reach his/her maximum individual potential.

We actively seek and value diversity in its many forms.

We develop curious and confident life-long learners with a strong moral and ethical sense of purpose.

We develop servant leaders who recognize their responsibility to help strengthen their communities.

Finally, our school's Portrait of a Graduate reflects our school's commitment to helping our students develop the skills and habits they will need to succeed in the future. Through our program, our graduates become "balanced individuals" who "challenge themselves to think critically, solving problems creatively and ethically, demonstrate initiative and curiosity, and to listen and communicate effectively; commit to promoting service locally and globally, uniting and motivating others to improve their community, and to modeling integrity and resilience; champion diversity in its many forms, honor as reflected in our Honor Code, and a healthy lifestyle through arts and athletics." In short, our school seeks to develop individuals who are committed to making the world a better place for us all.

I'm very pleased that, in developing these purpose and outcome statements, the school has specifically included a commitment to diversity in our core values and our portrait of a graduate. However, it's one thing to talk about the importance of diversity; it's quite another to ensure that we walk the walk. In the months and years to come, we specifically need to do more work to demonstrate how we "actively seek and value diversity in its many forms." Specifically, we need to improve our outreach to the African American community of Montgomery. Although students of color have attended MA for far more years in the school's history than they have not, we must confront the fact that our student population at MA is not reflective of the demographics within Montgomery. While we have made great strides in seeking and valuing diversity over the years, we simply must do better to live up to our stated values. We are not where we need to be.

This year, a team of our faculty members have engaged in work on an inclusion task force to propose ways to increase inclusion within the school's curriculum and programming so that each child has the opportunity to feel nurtured and validated within our community. Furthermore, another group of faculty and administration completed a study of implicit bias over the course of last summer. For the first time, we included a tour of Montgomery's Civil Rights history as a part of our orientation program for new faculty, and, in one of the highlights of the spring semester, a group of African American students involved in an Upper School Cultural Awareness Club designed an interactive Black History Culture Fair that all students in Grades 6-12 attended. This Cultural Awareness Club emerged out of a student-led panel discussion on racism the previous year, and several students from the club attended the first ever Low Country Student Diversity Conference in Savannah, Georgia. Moreover, for the past three years, we've engaged in a collaborative project with a group of teachers from an independent school in Brooklyn, New York, as they have visited the city as a part of their curriculum. Students and faculty from MA have travelled alongside students and faculty from New York to historical sites and museums in the area and engaged in conversations with one another about history and geographic stereotypes. I'm proud of what we accomplished as a school in recent years, but I recognize that more work must be done. We need to work with our faculty to think about what students at MA -- particularly students of color -- experience when on campus each day. We need to engage in more conversations with our students about these topics, even when they make us uncomfortable. We need to continue to attract faculty members and students from different backgrounds to the school, and we need to think critically about the ways in which we can improve cultural competence and appreciation of differences within our student body.

Furthermore, as we seek to develop servant leaders, we can't just focus on our insular community -- what I have sometimes called the "MA Bubble." We have to think about ways that we can support communities beyond our school. We have to ask ourselves tough questions like: what impact did the creation of MA as an all-white school ultimately have on the support for the development of public education in Montgomery? What impact did the creation of MA and other private, initially segregated schools have on the development of racial divisions in our city and state? What responsibility do we bear, over six decades later, for the challenges in the educational landscape that we see in the city today? While the complete answers of those questions require more detailed analysis than this essay can provide, it is clear that we must be willing to think about these questions and admit that the existence of MA in our community undeniably shaped the challenges that so many of Montgomery's children -- namely those unable to attend schools like our own -- face today. In the months and years to come, we must challenge ourselves -- as members of the community at large -- to think about how we might better support education for all children in Montgomery.

This year, I had the distinct honor of serving on the education committee for Mayor Reed's transition team. My colleagues on that committee and I spent two months this winter engaging in detailed study and reflection on the current situation that we face today. Through that powerful work, it was clear to me that all residents of Montgomery must invest in the health of our public school system -- regardless of whether their children attend those schools -- in order to ensure a productive future for our community. Although only a small portion of Montgomery's children will attend MA, we can think about ways that we can serve all of Montgomery's children.

Service of others is one of the clear hallmarks of leadership, and our community's future will depend on a culture of servant leadership. And strong leadership begins in the educational journey that MA seeks to provide each and every day -- in cultivating a desire to learn, a willingness to listen, and a heart for serving others within a community.

MA family and friends -- as we look at all of the challenges that face us, now is the time for MA graduates to commit themselves to living out our mission in the communities where we live.

Now is the time for MA students to double down on their efforts to pursue excellence in their work in academics, athletics and the arts as well as in their service of others.

Now is the time for our faculty, administration and staff to focus on clear, meaningful and demonstrable ways -- as our core values state -- "to value and seek diversity in its many forms."

Now is the time for us to respond to others with empathy, compassion and love and to treat others with the respect they deserve.

Now is the time for us to work collaboratively to seek common solutions to the systemic and cultural challenges that exist within our society.

Now is the time for us all to recognize and denounce the racism that continues to plague our society, accept and learn to counteract the implicit biases that impact us all, and to be willing to lean into the discomfort of recognizing the pain of the past and explore the possibilities of a positive future.

Now is the time for The Montgomery Academy, as an institution, to engage sincerely in the ongoing "pursuit of excellence" recognizing that we may not exactly be where we want to be as a school, city, country or world, but with continued work and dedication to positive goals, we can make progress.
