Goya CEO tells Fox he won't apologize after his praise for Trump sparks boycott David Goldman byline By David Goldman, CNN Business Updated 12:42 PM ET, Fri July 10, 2020 People are boycotting Goya after its CEO praised Trump New York (CNN Business)In an interview with Fox News Friday, Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue said he was "not apologizing" for praising President Donald Trump at the White House. Unanue's appearance at a Rose Garden Thursday ceremony announcing the White House Hispanic Prosperity Initiative sparked outrage on social media. By Friday morning, the hashtag #Goyaway was trending, as prominent Hispanic American leaders called for a boycott of Goya products. On "Fox & Friends," Unanue told co-hosts Steve Doocy, Emily Compagno and Brian Kilmeade that "it was good to talk to some friends," and he called the boycott movement "suppression of speech." He claimed a double standard in the reaction to his laudatory remarks about Trump, noting that he accepted an invitation from Michelle Obama in 2012 to an event in Tampa, Florida, to promote the former first lady's healthy-eating initiative. "You're allowed to talk good or talk praise to one president but you're not -- when I was called to be part of this commission to aid in economic and educational prosperity and you make a positive comment, all the sudden that's not acceptable," Unanue told Fox News. "If you're called by the president of the United States, you're going to say, 'No I'm sorry, I'm busy, no thank you?' I didn't say that to the Obamas and I didn't say that to President Trump." In brief remarks at the White House Thursday, Unanue compared Trump to his grandfather, a Spanish immigrant who in 1936 founded Goya. "We are all truly blessed ... to have a leader like President Trump who is a builder," Unanue said during the Rose Garden speech. "That is what my grandfather did. He came to this country to build, to grow, to prosper. We have an incredible builder, and we pray. We pray for our leadership, our president." The fact that Unanue would associate with Trump was sufficient to anger many people, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro, who acknowledged Goya's "staple" status in Latino households, but encouraged people to reconsider buying Goya after Unanue's White House appearance. President Trump is unpopular among Hispanic Americans. Hispanics favor Vice President Joe Biden over Trump in the race for president by a 36 percentage-point margin, according to the latest New York Times/Siena College poll. Unanue was invited to the White House as part of President Trump's executive order aimed at improving Hispanic Americans' access to educational and economic opportunities. In brief remarks at the White House Thursday, Unanue announced Goya would donate 1 million cans of Goya chickpeas and 1 million other food products to American food banks. He said the company wanted to help families hurt by the coronavirus pandemic. A Goya spokesman said the purpose of Unanue's White House appearance was to announce the donation and support Trump's initiative. Goya did not comment on the boycott calls.
Unless Unanue endorsed the Obamas like he did Trump, then his response is unfathomably disingenuous in terms of trying to equate his appearance at both events. And that’s not even to address the most obvious issue about his company’s customer base, the horrific treatment of immigrants directed largely towards Hispanics (and yes, undocumented workers buy Goya too) and his blindness to his stakeholders and employees who would be affected by an economic boycott of Goya products. Fuck him. I won’t buy Goya shit ever again.
As I posted elsewhere, Kirby brand black beans are superior in every single way to Goya and any other canned black bean on the market. Same goes for red bean soups (El Ebro kicks Goya’s ass here, too). Any other canned beans are all basically the same regardless of brand. Ancillary products like guava, olive oils, mojo and the like can also be purchased from competitors. Goya’s main draw is wide availability, but that’s not really a problem for me here in South Florida where even the average Publix carries multiple competitive brands for Hispanic foods.
I quickly learned how many other elite brands of Hispanic foods are out there when I moved to Florida. Like Asian food out west, Kikkoman is the main brand you see but there’s so much other shit you get exposed to when the market doesn’t buy your mass appeal products because the demographic knows it’s mediocre.
Got some soy sauce at the local Asian grocery recently. Changed my whole world. Threw that Kikkoman shit in the trash where it belongs.
Yes. Apparently you understand. Good luck, especially now that you've amplified it by going on FNC to have your bitchass validated by prominently known ghouls.
To be fair, he didn't know shit about the Party of Lincoln before he pretended to be one so he could get elected.
If only "cancel culture" referred to our ability to cancel these GOPers who clearly have no business being part of a functional, and ethical society.
whoooo really american pac. Tell me more. That part of the spot where they play his quote about how "they buy many toys from me" or whatever is very, very good.

Own 20 yard line? These motherfuckers fielded the ball inside their own end zone, fumbled it, picked it up in a panic, ran out of the end zone to avoid a safety, got tackled on their own one yard line, then all rushed the field for a group celebration dance like they just won the Super Bowl.
Crenshaw’s current timeline is full of nyc crime data for July and SJW/cancel culture stuff. GOP definitely focused on the task at hand.
I work part time at a beach restaurant/bar here and this is what another worker there just put in our group chat just pulling in Who the fuck wraps their boat in a politician's name? Much less a raging asshole of a politician.
Weird fucking times. Literally not something that existed until 2016 (trump flags, boat and vehicle wraps).
That might be the guy that lives here in Jupiter. He started the whole stupid flotilla thing because the HOA in the upscale community he lives in asked him to take down his Trump flag so he wrapped his boat with that shit as a protest and a bunch of angry white asshole neighbors egged him on. The worst part is the guy is a fucking Peruvian immigrant.
