It’s an opinion from the National Review that the New York Times decided to amplify because they suck.
They copy pasted a National review article and called it an op Ed in the name of both sidesism . It’s as bad as you imagine it would be.
Back before vaccines, and in the middle of a surge, DeSantis used to make reporters jam into his office for briefings.
I'm ashamed of the time that I thought I was smart for reading that paper. I was so, so naive. I'm sure I continue to be, but fuck
I mean, it will improve your vocabulary if you are a high school student studying for the SAT. Edit - and the crossword puzzle is legit.
Eek, but dig. That was the timeframe. I had a friend whose dad read it and I admired him. As it circles around, he was a smug wishy-washy, self-entitled liberal ex-hippie who was full on capitalist.
Got to admire a principled conservative like Rich Lowry, who supports fascism but personally hates Trump because Trump doesn't care about the deficit.
And I guess this is merely a glimpse into the future when the government allows literally every single aspect of life to be monopolized and it's just one disaster after another
As a new guy, Daniel ocean clowned me for saying something so similarly stupid. But, yes. Full fledged, as fast as we can. And we gleefully buy a Yukon and go to Applebee's. Exactly. Sincerely no disrespect. I'm as fucking shell shocked
Same. There was a thread where I was completely agreed with you but you loled me. I'm guessing this is related
Abbott Labs had a huge recall of formula, but chuds are blaming Biden. Capitalism strikes again. I know the tweeter kind of sucks, but this is a good rundown
Like a monopoly broken? No. "Some" states allow a limited amount of direct to consumer sales but those numbers are very limited and the distributor tier of alcohol is heavily consolidated
Yep. In SC, if a liquor store wants to carry a certain brand, there is only one place they’re allowed to purchase it from. There’s a grand total of three distributors that compete (work out or cooperate with are more apt terms) for the exclusive rights to sell brands to the retail stores. The three distributors can get away with permanent price increases for the flimsiest of reasons like gas prices spiking for a few days.
I was just thinking of all the new breweries/distilleries but is sounds like distribution is the choke point?
Something like 3 companies control over 90% of the baby formula market, Abbot I believe is the biggest. I'm just glad our kid isn't young anymore because we definitely used a ton of formula as my wife didn't make nearly enough breast milk. At the grocery store yesterday they had some stock but probably well under half of the normal amount.
Yes. Laws vary by state but generally places like that can self-distribute if they do under a certain limit of volume otherwise they're forced to go through a 3rd party distributor
Also fuck Rhule and The Hoarse Account, they screamed "SOCIALISM" when the one candidate who actually would have the spine to break up huge monopolies started trying to make a real push to become the Democratic nominee. They are out of touch PMC pieces of shit that aren't fit to walk the Earth.
Was gonna keep going but I see it’s already been addressed that it’s a lot of them. We have market failures everywhere because of bought and paid for politicians ensuring high barriers to entry and pretty close to unfettered M&A.
I'm probably just in an extra salty mood, but seriously as a supposed news pundit if your first thought is "Wait, this is abnormal. We don't have a monopoly problem here in the US, this seems out of bounds!" then you should quit your fucking job. I couldn't imagine being that out of touch.
One of the reasons I was a conservative in the past is I actually bought into the myth of the free market then realized that’s a fantasy land sold to saps who don’t have the money or resources to rig the game
Free market is basically a religion. You have to believe the market reacts rationally and justly while being led by irrational actors. It makes no sense but if you have faith!
I also love how these companies are all against regulation, until it comes to regulations that exclude competitors.
at my grocery store they keep it locked up in front with the cigarettes and expensive booze. It depresses me every time I walk past.
When my kids were old enough to switch from formula to milk we saved like $75-$100 a month. Yay capitalism!
I have a recurring amazon shipment that runs $140 every 2 weeks. And that's the best case scenario, because we almost had to do this special dairy free stuff that was going to run $400/month after insurance
Love the fedora tipping libertarians who think a game with no rules is "fair competition". Imagine if i showed up to the 100m dash on a motorcycle or some shit and it was allowed because i paid the olympic committee $1m a pop to change the rules specifically for me because i'm an "innovator"
Our son was born 2 weeks ago and we are feeding him with formula. This shortage is terrifying. We’ve been buying as much as we can over the last week out of fear that we won’t be able to feed him. What an amazing country this is.
