I feel like an unjustified, unprovoked war would be really unpopular. Feel like much of the public learned from Iraq, and lots of young voters have only known war and deficits.

Not sure this war will be very popular. I literally have no clear idea what it’s supposed to be about. Can’t imagine many people feeling differently.

Iraq had also been starved for a decade before we invaded. Iran is 4x larger and has 2x the population of Iraq.

Republicans don’t bother with facts because their policies only benefit the few. That’s why they prefer talking points, Repeated over and over until their voters forget they aren’t true. Reality is a losing proposition for republicans.

It is better for them to push conspiracies, scare tactics, false equivalence, demonization of opponents, anything to distract from reality.

    Here’s a great example:

Rudy tweeted the fake Pelosi video, asking what is wrong with Pelosi

So Nadler just said on Maddow that Mueller wants to testify in private. A transcript would be made available. He doesn’t want to be part of a political spectacle.

Fair enough. But remember everyone has a different idea of what the “right thing” is. The current polling is clear the onus will be on Dems to change the minds of the majority. And they’ll have to do so while having a person who is deeply unpopular in the battleground states serve as the public face of the effort. Also, not all Dems are going to support this; there will be defections. That means you’re gonna be stuck playing defense right out of the gate in a game where the opponent is mathematically certain to win. So, essentially, we’re playing for a moral victory.

And no matter how valuable you consider that “victory” here is potentially the real life cost to the nation:
    (4) more years of Trump
    (6) more years of Mitch as ML
(2-4) years of McCarthy as SOH
    (35) years of Amy Barrett on the SC

Maybe we should let the ppl have their own impeachment vote on Nov 3, 2020...

If trump wins re-election, it won’t be because he was impeached. That’s foolish to assert. He has a rabid insane base. Showing the president is a criminal is not a negative for Democratic election chances - regardless of what the senate does with that information.

None of us knows exactly how an impeachment process will play out; it’s a wildcard no matter how you cut it. And the media has run literally thousands of credible stories about Trump engaging in criminal behavior for nearly half a decade. I think at this point most people are just over the never-ending hearings and daily accusations. If a voter wants him gone, they’ll vote him out.

“The right thing” is the law. What’s the point of having laws and subpoenas and processes if there’s no recourse when they aren’t adhered to? That’s what I’m talking about. Why should I vote for people who say they oppose what’s going on if they aren’t going to attempt to do anything about it?

Also, fuck “it’s not popular.” Fuck that shit to hell. Civil rights weren’t exactly popular either, but striving for that was the right thing to do. So enough of this weak-sauce bullshit. Have core beliefs and fight for them. The Republicans do, that’s why they win.

As for your doomsday scenario, that shit could easily happen if you continue to do nothing, so why not go out giving it your best shot. You seem to want to kneel on the ball when you’re behind. That’s not good strategy, no matter how flowery you are in defending it.

That isn’t what we should ask of our congress. They are there to protect us from a criminal self-dealing executive. It’s part of their job. They need to do it. Democrats were elected to be a check on the president. If they don’t do that, they have failed in their promise.

I appreciate your passion. But impeachment is a political process, not a legal one. Have as many investigations as you want, but distribute those findings to the people and let their vote be the one that removes Trump. There’s more than one way to go about this.

  35. Rothko

    Rothko The Grand Sachem

No one is saying give Trump a pass, but it might be best to have those investigations then run on those findings, rather than kickstarting something no one can control.

And why exactly would those people vote Democrat? “They’re not Donald Trump” isn’t a sufficient answer.

You need to evoke passion to win elections. There’s no reason for people to vote for Democrats if they just sit there and twiddle their thumbs while everything erodes. Overthinking, fear and unwillingness to take chances doesn’t inspire and doesn’t lead to victory. It’s time to stop making excuses for inaction and taking quarter-measures.

  38. Rothko

Look, your point is well-taken. It’s a damn frustrating process. But the actual evidence before us clearly shows a lot of dems are very likely to pay a price for kickstarting impeachment. I also believe it potentially gives Trump the best chance of pulling another upset because he’ll counter it with, “let the ppl decide on Election Day.” As we saw with Garland, that’s a tough narrative to counter.

Maybe I’m wrong. Time will tell I suppose. Ttyl zzz

You're being disingenuous with the bolded. It's not like its 10 percent approve, 75 disapprove and 15 don't know proposition. It's more like 30-40-30, and that's with Democratic leadership being meek and afraid and making little effort to control any part of the message. Those Democrats, and you from most of your posting, seem stuck in a rut. Too afraid to take the initiative that they have no control over any part of what's going on. Politics are a lot like sales -- you have to sell what you're doing. Many Democrats have a compulsive instinct to completely ignore or avoid that.

Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Stop being afraid, dude. I don't know how else to tell you that. I'm not exactly a person who was gung-ho over politics prior to the 2016 election process, and a lot of that was because I didn't see much of a difference between one side or the other. It's that type of mentality that the Democrats have to defeat. A lot of the country doesn't vote because they don't see a difference between the two, and sitting there whistling in the corner while the Republicans are setting fires in the classroom doesn't exactly combat that dynamic. It reinforces it.

If Democrats are unwilling to fight this president right now by any means necessary and unwilling to stand up and make a case why, we're putting ourselves at the mercy of assholes, and only because those assholes are willing to shoot their shot.

I know I'm picking on you Rothko , but the mentality that Pelosi possesses on doing nothing and that you seem to want to go 12 rounds in defending reminds me of why I ignored politics for much of my life. Just empty words and no guts or backbone.

He is putting US intel assets lives at risk. Nunes tried to do the same thing to witnesses in the Russia investigation. It is a tactic to dissuade potential witnesses from coming forward. It is a threat to national security. Russia sure does seem to end up benefiting directly/indirectly from a lot of Trump tactics.

Let’s be claro, the polls are split in a very partisan way. 91% of R’s oppose impeachment, duh. But only 23% of D’s oppose impeachment with fucking 70 PERCENT IN FAVOR. Sooooooooo, which Dems are going to be eviscerated by backlash? And the Indy’s are at 51-40 disapprove/approve, the people who don’t pay as much attention and could use a national stage for allegations against trump. These numbers are from two weeks ago, NBC Marist.

Or we can keep twiddling our thumbs.

I’m in favor of impeachment, but I don’t believe that’s an accurate characterization of Independents. Many of those self-identifying as independent are turned off by what they view (incorrectly imo) as fierce and counter-productive partisanship. In fact, I’d venture that’s why a slight majority of them do not favor impeachment. Beginning impeachment proceedings has a high likelihood of playing poorly with self-described independents.

My only hope is that Pelosi is trying to run this closer to the election so there’s no perceived “exoneration” by the Senate before too far ahead of next November. Otherwise, she’s being stunningly politically tone deaf on the issue and should just step aside - and I’ve been a supporter of hers to this point.
