I'm midway through Season 3. Just watched the episode where Bartlet agreed to a bipartisan Congressional censure "because he was wrong." First of all, this Congress agreeing to anything like that would take a miracle and b) the thought of this president admitting anything wrong (even though that's all he does) is laughable too. What I wouldn't give for West Wing to be real life and for this dystopian crap we're living through to be the product of a TV show.

By and large yeah their hiring has been linear. That said, they've made mistakes and a lot of those cuts are on the corporate side of Sam's club. After all why have the corporate infrastructure if you're cutting stores out?
They are facing great competition from Amazon and Costco. This is a good thing, it will force them to get better. Laying off 1000 people by someone who employees 1 million + is a non story. They will probably rehire many of those same people in a different part of the company. While their hiring may be close to linear, this is far from the first time they have laid people off. Maybe they layoff at Sams Club and hire at Jet.com
Actually the corporate jobs are some of the better paying ones available in Arkansas. And they're not about to go on a hiring binge after they just bought the company. Not when Walmart has had their own e commerce people out in California.

Those corporate employees are fucked in terms of finding another equal job in NWA. They could maybe get on with a vendor or Tyson or god forbid JB Hunt but as far as finding another job like they had it’s simply not there.

Why should they be entitled to another job in NWA? People move for work all the time. How many corporate millionaires has Wal-Mart made? I’d venture to guess a lot more than most other companies. Layoffs / restructuring etc are not exclusive to Walmart.
Sams club was not booming. No one is arguing that. The layoffs are necessary in order to compete With Costco and Amazon. The competition will result in better service and results for everyone. Something you probably can’t comprehend.
