Imagine watching Michigan get absolutely demolished by the only good offense they faced all year and walking away even considering them a top ten team.

If you think leaving a room takes away his influence, then y’all should be talking about firing him on that private board of yours. That’s not how committees actually work in real life.

And I don’t see how UF not wanting to play UCF offends you. There’s zero upside and a decent amount of down. Just business.

I just took advantage of their cyber monday deal and I have to say The Athletic is great. Totally worth it.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Hope Mack wiped away tears as the final seconds ticked away.

Tears for her son, Darriel Mack Jr., the backup quarterback leading UCF to victory. Tears for McKenzie Milton, who watched the game at his apartment in Orlando while recovering from a major knee injury a week ago and is “like a brother” to Darriel.

Who could have imagined Darriel Mack in this position, leading UCF to a second consecutive undefeated regular season and American Athletic Conference title? Not when Mack redshirted last year and was expected to be the third-string quarterback this year, until Noah Vedral transferred to Nebraska in January. Not when he was behind a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate in Milton. Not when he was handed the reins and entered this game completing less than 50 percent of his passes this season.

And not when UCF trailed Memphis by 17 points after a first half in which Mack lost two fumbles.

But there he was at the end, the game’s most outstanding player after totaling 407 yards and six touchdowns in the No. 8 Knights’ 56-41 comeback victory.

“I think he’s doing the job God has gifted him to do,” Hope Mack told The Athletic from the stands. “He’s doing a fantastic job. For him to play a whole 60 minutes is a wonderful feeling, and it’s awesome to see him on the field executing and doing what he loves to do.”

The entire Mack family was there, coming from Norfolk, Va. They brought signs that read “Mack Attack” and “8 BGR8, Win 4 10.”

“10” is Milton, the Hawaii native. UCF passed out leis to every fan before the game to honor the quarterback. The Mack family had their own black and gold leis. Darriel and Milton, roommates for road games, last spoke Friday night, and Milton’s advice was simple.

“He told me just to go out and play my own game, never get too high, never get too low,” Darriel Mack told The Athletic while walking off the field. “Keep my head in the game.”

    (Chris Vannini / The Athletic)
By the end of the game, Spectrum Stadium was rocking, but for a while, it appeared the emotion of playing for Milton wasn’t going to match the actual play on the field. Four plays into the game, Memphis led 7-0 thanks to Darrell Henderson’s 62-yard touchdown run. Four plays after that, Mack was hit and fumbled the ball away, leading to another Henderson touchdown run to give Memphis a 14-0 lead just 3 minutes, 5 seconds into the game.

On UCF’s third drive, Mack was sacked and fumbled again, leading to a field goal and a 24-7 Tigers lead. The following drive, Mack fumbled while going into the end zone, but it was recovered by UCF tight end Michael Colubiale for a Knights touchdown.

A Henderson touchdown pass gave Memphis a 38-21 halftime lead, UCF’s largest deficit in the past two years. UCF had no answer for Memphis’ direct snaps to running backs in the backfield. Henderson had 207 rushing yards on just 10 carries. Patrick Taylor had another 94 on 10 carries, and the two had accounted for five total touchdowns. Memphis’ 336 rushing yards at halftime were the most allowed by any FBS team in a first half this season.

But UCF had been in this position before.

On Oct. 13, the Knights trailed Memphis 30-17 at halftime, and Henderson had 172 rushing yards. They made adjustments and held the Tigers to zero points and Henderson to 27 rushing yards in the second half.

On Saturday, it happened again. UCF held Memphis to three points and Henderson to 3 yards in the second half.

“We had guys that didn’t have gap integrity in the first half,” UCF head coach Josh Heupel said. “I thought our ’backers weren’t shaded enough, so some of the combinations were able to seal off the linebacker on the second level, create some big plays. Structurally, there weren’t a ton of changes, some subtle adjustments by (defensive coordinator Randy) Shannon and the staff, but as much as anything, we started to feed in blocks playing with great technique and playing gap sound.”

Heupel also had no worries about his quarterback, Mack, who was an efficient 12-for-19 passing for 193 yards and a touchdown in the second half. He just needed to stop fumbling.

“I was able to look in his eyes and see that there was no cause for concern,” Heupel said. “No hesitation. He still had a confident look in his eyes, was ready to go out and compete.”

Then UCF did what it has done in every third quarter this season: dominate. A 14-3 quarter pulled the Knights within 41-35. UCF has outscored opponents 122-33 in the third quarter this season.

Two plays into the fourth, UCF took a 42-41 lead on Mack’s 2-yard run and never looked back. Mack rushed for two more touchdowns to close it out.

Mack completed 19 of 27 passes for 348 yards and two touchdowns, with 59 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground. In the past 20 years, the only other FBS quarterback to throw for that many yards and rush for four touchdowns was Lamar Jackson against Syracuse in 2016, according to STATS. Mack is the second player over the past five years with two passing touchdowns and four rushing touchdowns, according to ESPN Stats & Info, joining Mississippi State’s Nick Fitzgerald.

“Everybody has confidence in D.J.,” Heupel said of Mack. “I think you saw that tonight, and D.J. has a lot of confidence in himself and played fantastic football. Since I’ve gotten here in January, no matter what has hit them adversely, they’ve reacted and responded in a positive way.”

One of the loudest fan reactions came in the final minutes, when Memphis took the field down by 14, and UCF put a stock clip of Milton telling fans to get loud up on the video board. The same stock clips of various players had played throughout the game, but the Milton image meant more to everyone. It was impossible to miss the impact of the emotion of playing for Milton. Signs for Milton were all over the stadium, as were the aforementioned leis.

When the Knights celebrated the win, wide receiver Dredrick Snelson ran around the outside of the field, holding up Milton’s No. 10 jersey. At the trophy ceremony, one player held up a big sign of Milton’s head.

Milton was discharged from Tampa General Hospital on Friday and returned to his apartment in Orlando. His mom lives in Orlando during the season, and his dad came in from their family home in Hawaii. His mom was at Saturday’s game, while Milton watched at home with his dad. ESPN reported Saturday that Milton underwent three knee surgeries during the week and will have reconstructive knee surgery in four to six weeks.

Despite being away, Milton took part in team meetings over FaceTime during the week. Milton has had an eye toward coaching whenever his playing career ends. He told The Athletic in the spring that Scott Frost offered him a graduate position spot whenever he wants it.

“He’s been in meetings all week with us on FaceTime. Having a common opponent in Memphis, he’s seen tendencies maybe other people haven’t seen,” Mack said. “He sat and talked to me about that.”

(Reinhold Matay / USA TODAY Sports)
While presenting the conference championship trophy to UCF, American commissioner Mike Aresco finished by saying to the crowd, “On to the Playoff!” which was met with a roar. Away from the microphone, UCF athletic director Danny White asked Aresco what was happening in the Alabama-Georgia game, which the Crimson Tide won 35-28.

Heupel, who had dismissed all questions about the Playoff throughout the season, finally said afterward that his team deserves a shot to compete. White held a short news conference after Heupel and made his case.

“This is a sport,” White said. “These kids deserve the opportunity to settle it in true competition. That’s what college athletics is.”

He added that if UCF doesn’t get in, it shows a glaring flaw in the four-team Playoff model. It’s a model every conference originally signed off on in 2012. The last team to go undefeated and untied in back-to-back seasons without winning the national title was Penn State in 1968-69. The Knights may be the next one.

Still, the Playoff debate didn’t take away from the bigger celebration on the field and in the stands. A celebration for a comeback, another conference championship, a 25th consecutive win and a victory to honor Milton.

Mack called No. 10 as soon as he got into the locker room.

“He was just telling me how proud of me he was,” Mack said. “I told him how much I loved him and how hard I played for him. This was for him.”

The debating will never end, but there’s no denying that what this UCF team has accomplished over the past two years. This year’s team is 12-0 with a completely new coaching staff, a rebuilt defense and a roster that lost four players to the NFL Draft.

With gold and black confetti on the ground, the Mack family posed for pictures with fans and other family members, people they didn’t know, proud of their son after a performance few could have predicted.

They soaked it all in, like Darriel, making the most of an unexpected moment in the spotlight.

Dumb of him to write he was expected to be the 3rd QB. The only reason Vedral got playing time last season was because of his familiarity with Frost's system. Mack has NFL talent. Vedral is probably destined to hold a clipboard forever.

From ESPN's first bowl prediction article. So much fucking rage...
PlayStation Fiesta Bowl: LSU vs. UCF

    [IMG][IMG]

(1 p.m. ET on ESPN at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona)

I love the way UCF rallied behind new quarterback Darriel Mack to win another AAC title and post another perfect regular season, honoring injured QB McKenzie Milton in the process. But the streak ends in the desert as an LSU team, more motivated than Auburn was last year, uses its run game and defense to hold the Knights down just enough.

    Prediction: LSU 40, UCF 33

LSU broke 40 twice all season in regulation, vs Rice and and Ole Miss. They have just as many games they scored in the single digits. They aren't getting 40 unless we get 60.

The OL will continue to be dominant
I expect improvement on the DL and hopefully more depth
    LB-no Pat equals improvement
CB- elite unit going to get better
Safeties- Lose Gibson but Grant is a star and we have depth here

K and Punter- lose both but we wont be doing either next season

OL is really good this year. It's hard to gauge how that's going to look.

I can see it happening but to highlight the rarity of something like that if we managed to go undefeated next season we would have 40 wins which would put us at the 2nd longest streak of all time behind only the 1950s Oklahoma teams.

The sad part is that no one is going to talk about the Xs and Os of the game. Switching channels last night and went past ESPN, saw our logo so stopped, as they started to talk about our game on College Football Live or whatever show was on later at night. First thing said, "well the most intriguing matchup to me is"....(go on)..."seeing if Ed Orgeron can motivate his players." (Oh for fuck sake). Ok so another guy talks "well I think the game will be won in the trenches" (go on) "because LSU is just going to dominate on both sides of the ball because they have the talent" (FUCKING HELL). And then multiple guys starting talking about how young LSUs team is as if that's some sort of differentiator (we aren't young?) or even an advantage anyway. And that's it. That's the analysis.

Moral of the story is a) no one has learned anything and b) no one is going to break down the matchup except a couple of really dedicated writers. So let's share those articles when they actually show up.
