Gordon Brown is unique in his stint ending in a good ole fashion electoral defeat. Which actually wasn’t all that straightforward since it involved two parties that disagree on everything forming a coalition to oust Labour.
Since 1970 Wilson (resigned on own accord) Callaghan (lost an election) Thatcher (deposed by party) Major (lost election) Blair (long goodbye after pressure) Brown (lost election) Cameron (lost Brexit) May (deposed) It’s a mix and match really. If you want truly banana politics, look to Australia.
Long term Conservative parliamentarian Enoch Powell said all political lives, unless cut off in midstream, end in failure.
So true, that Rudd/Gillard partnership then bitter rivalry was amazing content. Great documentary on it called The. Killing Season.
FFS, it is easy to forget how many ridiculous cabinet positions the British government has. Personally, I would want to be the Minister for Lacrosse Enthusiasts in Northern Ireland if I had my pick of the lot.
I hope Boris can draw a crowd that reaches double figures who are willing march to Parliament and take over The House of Commons. I'll feel sort of sad for him if his pathetic version of Jan 6th turns out to be too big of a laughingstock.
They're likely to end up with someone worse; and if there's an election, Labour will likely lose because, just like our beloved Democrats, they're a tepid party much more adept at criticism than presenting actual ideas, winning elections, or governing.
Not 100% certain but I'm pretty sure the entire idea of the office of PM is never mentioned in any constitutional document. Throw out the entire concept IMO. There are so many glaring weaknesses in what it is today. Pretty sure a single person (not even the monarch) isn't what they had in mind when Robert Walpole became the first PM.
This style of govt is so fascinating as an American. Could you imagine the Cabinet just mass resigning - would be insane
The run of the mill electorate doesn't have a say on who the nominees for PM are. Which in hindsight sounds pretty fucking genius considering how our nomination method backfired to say the least.
Unless L and LD do a vote sharing agreement, the same thing that’s been happening will happen again; left-of-center will split the vote, and Tory’s will win with 37% of the vote.
He will be forced to resign after President Xi posts a video of Big PM Sam selling cabinet positions to the CCP. This would normally be fantastic for Xi but there is just something so sleazy about Sam's behavior that he would be morally obligated to share with the public.
In fairness, most of these resignations have been from non-cabinet people, just random junior ministers.
I mean Labour ran on a very ambitious manifesto last time around and got annihilated, so I don't know if you can criticize them for being too tepid.
He always treated being PM with the seriousness of being a fantasy football commissioner. That quote is perfect.
Imagining Boris say “Them’s the breaks” when being confronted by any of the people he stabbed in the back on his journey to 10 Downing Street is fucking hilarious.
When the history books are written about Johnson’s rise and fall they will make some reading. He’s most unprincipled and self serving person ever to hold high office in the UK, and I’d argue globally too. The shear damage he has done economically and socially is hard to put into words, and all become he wanted to be “world king”.
