    CHAPEL HILL
My first reaction upon reading the Yahoo! Sports reportthat J.P. Tokoto plans to skip his senior season at North Carolina to enter the NBA draft was probably a lot like yours: Huh? What? Really? This makes no sense.

But then, after some more thought, the immediate surprise wore off and it started to make sense -- a lot of it. Not because Tokoto might – as he thinks he can – work his way into becoming a first-round pick, or because, regardless of where he's picked (or isn't) this isn't the worst financial move (more on that later).

No, Tokoto's decision to enter the draft makes sense – at least more sense than it does in a vacuum – given that he just didn't appear all that happy this season. I'm not going to say Tokoto was a malcontent. That'd be too strong. But it's fair to question whether he ever really accepted his role on this team, and whether he caused the Tar Heels some chemistry issues.

Was there anything obvious to suggest he did? No. Nothing too obvious.

Tar Heel guard J.P. Tokoto entering NBA draft[/paste:font]
There weren't any memorable exchanges between Tokoto and his teammates – at least not during games – that suggested they didn't get along. Even so, I believe I watched this team in person more than anyone who makes a living doing so – with the exception of Roy Williams and company – and it was impossible to escape the thought that something was just … off … with Tokoto this season.

Maybe it was the body language. Maybe it was the fact that he often forced things – whether it was errant passes or poorly-timed pull-up jumpers that just seemed out of place in UNC's offense. There were times earlier in the season when Tokoto appeared on the verge of taking the next step and becoming an All-ACC type player. But he never took that step.

In fact, you could argue that he regressed in some areas as the season went on. There was that one stretch in late January and the first two weeks of February when Tokoto, to put it mildly, really struggled.

He committed six turnovers in back to back games against Syracuse and Louisville. In the next game, against Virginia, he finished with one point and was nearly absent from the box score. He didn't start the next two games, at Boston College and at Pittsburgh, where he finished with four points.

I remember talking to him inside the locker room after the Pitt game, and it was kind of a weird talk.

“My playing time hasn't been affected, I'm just not starting,” he said. “A lot more people make it a big deal than what it is. This is the second week in a row I got a question like that. My answer is simply it's basketball. I'm going to keep playing whether I'm starting or not. And it shouldn't be anything big to anybody else. It shouldn't even be a question.”

Clearly – at least it was clear to me – Tokoto didn't handle the demotion well. Then he returned to the starting lineup in UNC's next game, at Duke, and gave one of his finest performances of the season: 15 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, three steals in the Tar Heels' overtime defeat.

That was the maddening thing about Tokoto: he could do what he did at Duke. Or he could disappear. Or even worse, perhaps, than disappearing, he could hurt the team with turnovers and poor shots.

There were times this season when Marcus Paige, the team's unquestioned leader, questioned whether some of his teammates were in it for the right reasons – whether they were more dedicated to the team or to themselves, and their numbers. I remember one moment in particular when Paige did this, after UNC lost against Virginia on Feb. 2.

    After that loss Paige said:

“We have talent. We have pieces. But if you don't have five guys buying in, playing every possession the way coach preaches, you know, it sounds cliché and it sounds – that's boring talk for media, it's not anything juicy for you guys. But it's the truth. When you have five guys committed to helping each other on the floor, working together, setting good screens to get right guys the ball. That's success. And then when you have talent, it elevates it to another level. So we're still somewhere trying to figure out how to get to that point.”

    Paige went on:

“We can't keep talking about change. We've got to have guys look in the mirror and decide they're going to change, buy in, and then some good things will happen.”

Paige didn't name names but, naturally, all of us who heard what he had to say wondered who he was talking about. Williams certainly challenged the heart and hustle at times of Brice Johnson and Kennedy Meeks. So Paige's comments, in a sense, fit them. More than anyone, though, they seemed – at least to me – to be directed toward Tokoto.

Not because Tokoto was a bad teammate or a completely me-first player. But because there were times when what he was doing on the court seemed so far removed from what Williams wanted him to be doing. Some of what Tokoto told Yahoo! Sports' excellent NBA reporter Adrian Wojarnowski support the assertion that there was a disconnect between Tokoto and Williams.

Tokoto told Wojarnowski: “I feel like there can be a lot more to me as a player, more than just the defensive player who can occasionally dunk the ball. I know I can be so much more, but I’m not sure that I’m pushed to be that much more (in college).”

It's a strange thing for Tokoto to say, that he wasn't pushed, given that Williams appeared – at least publicly – to push Tokoto as hard as anyone with the possible exception of Johnson. Then again, Tokoto could have meant it in a way that he wasn't pushed to develop offensively – that perhaps Williams and the coaching staff chose to emphasize the things Tokoto proved he could do well: defend and finish in transition.

If Tokoto wanted a chance to do more than that, he was right to leave. His senior season was unlikely to be all that much different from his junior season. He was never going to be a leading option offensively for the Tar Heels. He was never going to be the guy UNC turned to for late points with a game on the line.

In fact, after Tokoto missed a late jump shot in the loss at Duke, Williams said, honestly, that Tokoto hadn't been the first, second or third option on that play. But those kinds of things likely irritated Tokoto, too. He saw more in himself – more, perhaps, than Williams saw. Then again, few college coaches showed more interest in Tokoto than Williams did during the recruiting process. Tokoto was, for a time, the centerpiece of the Tar Heels' 2012 recruiting class.

And he was, it can't be forgotten, the initial link between Paige and Williams, who began recruiting Paige only after Tokoto recommended him to Williams. Tokoto's three years at UNC, though, were a bit strange. He's as good of a natural athlete as just about anyone who's ever played at UNC, and some of his dunks provided some of the team's most memorable highlights in recent years.

Yet overall Tokoto was a confounding player. He could be an excellent all-around contributor one game and then could go missing the next. Tokoto never seemed to lack for confidence but at times he lacked the production to go along with it. You got the sense that maybe he thought he was above his role player status, that he believed he should have been something more.

And now he'll get the chance to prove himself. Tokoto told Wojnarowski that he was better off working with professional trainers and coaches during the offseason.

“I think that’ll give me the best chance to grow than staying school and being that player that fit into the mold of my first three years (at UNC),” he said.

It was a comment befitting of Tokoto's ultimate goal of individual growth, which isn't a bad goal but one that, at times, could conflict with what's best for a college basketball team comprised of a lot of guys who, like Tokoto, arrived as a heralded prospect. Tokoto will receive some criticism from fans, and some UNC supporters will find it easy to make fun of it.

After all, here's a guy who didn't even average 10 points per game, who led the Tar Heels in turnovers, trying to go to the NBA. Who does he think he is?Regardless of whether he's drafted, though, Tokoto will do well financially, either in the NBA or overseas. He'll make more money than the vast majority of people who will graduate from UNC in the next two years.

Of course, he could have done the same had he stuck around for his senior season. Maybe to Tokoto, though, the writing was on the wall. By now he would have met with Williams to discuss individual goals and the vision for the future, and maybe Tokoto didn't like what he heard. Maybe he saw a decrease in playing time coming.

This is a decision that Tokoto believes is the best one for him. In a lot of ways, it could be best for UNC, too.

TIGARD, Ore. -- Top senior Jaylen Brown spoke with Inside Carolina on Friday at the Hoop Summit about his development, his approach, and his Tar Heel recruitment.

What does it mean to play in the Hoop Summit and against the World team?
It means a lot, you know the world team is trying to make their name off of this game. There’ve been a lot of good players like Dirk Nowitzki, Serge Ibaka, Dante Exum that have come through playing for the world team and had successful careers so far. They’ve been playing well and are coming to make a name for themselves.

How comfortable are you playing with your U.S. teammates?
Yeah, about half the team I played with this summer on the U18 team and then the other half of the guys played on the U17 team so it’s basically like trying to mesh two teams.

How has your experience been over the last two weeks? First Chicago, then New York, and now Portland.
It’s been tiring, but it’s been cool. You get used to it, the travelling. I’m just trying to prepare myself for two years from now when I’m in playing probably in the NBA or however many years from now. It’s just good preparation and good practice for that type of stuff. It definitely takes a toll on your body and I’m learning that I have to take care of my body a little better.

Are you planning on narrowing your schools at any point in the future?
Yeah, around these next one or two or maybe three weeks I’ll probably be narrowing it down based on the best decision for me. I’ve got about eight schools I’m looking at right now and this week and next week I’ll be probably be praying a lot and thinking about what I don’t want and what I do.

Will you conduct any more in-home visits?
Yeah, we’ll see. If I want an in-home visit I’ll reach out, but if it’s not necessary than I won’t.

What parts of your game do you want to improve on?
That’s a long list of things. I could start naming stuff but then we’ll be here all day. It’s a lot of things I want to work on.

What about this summer? With a few more months before college what are your goals?
I’m really excited about this summer. I’m really looking forward to it. Like I said I’ve got a lot of things I know I have to work on. I’m going to get in the gym as much as possible and get as much therapy as possible and make sure my body is 100 percent healthy to make sure I am ready to go for college. It’s a big opportunity to play in front of a lot of people and I’m just going to try to take advantage of it.

Let’s go back to last summer. You made a big jump going into your senior year and are now considered one of the top prospects. What was your mindset the last year?
Really, last summer was a big summer for me as well. I didn’t really go to as many AAU tournaments and things like that. I just worked on my game and worked on my body. That was better for me than playing 1,000 or however many AAU games that you play nowadays. I just went to three tournaments. In those three tournaments I displayed what I could do in those three tournaments and I had the opportunity to turn some heads. I was just working on my game and working on my body; I wasn’t focused on playing as many games as possible but I just used the games I played and took advantage of the opportunity.

You had good shooting numbers in those tournaments. Are you still working on this area?
Yeah, absolutely, that’s the area I’m trying to develop the most right now. I feel like if my shot is on I really can’t be stopped. I can get to the basket anytime I want and can shoot really well and it’s the second piece I’m adding to my game as I’m developing as I get older. I’m working on my form getting up a lot of shots every day. Definitely my shot is something I’m working on and it’s a work in progress.

Over the last two weeks, a lot of NBA scouts have watched you play. Does anything change when it goes from college coaches to NBA scouts?
No, basketball is basketball. I don’t care who is watching. Same thing I don’t try to focus on who is watching I just try to play the game the same way every time. It’s a blessing to be on the court. I try not to pay attention to the rankings and the hype because once you start paying attention to that is when your start diminishing and your game starts going backwards. I’m trying to go forwards and be positive.

UNC is one of the schools recruiting you. What has their main pitch been throughout the recruitment?
Probably about the same as everybody else. Coach Roy Williams, great coach, humble guy, been around a long time. UNC has a lot of tradition. Coach Roy talked to me about that. He said they do things a different way at UNC. Like everybody comes back and they mentor the young guys and prepare them so it’s a family like environment. I felt that when I was there. I honestly did. I could see why there is something at UNC that is so special.

Are you close with anyone on the current roster? I know a lot of them played on the Nike circuit while you played on the Adidas.
Yeah, Theo. Theo is my guy. I’ve known him for a few years. Played with him at camps a few times. Joel Berry I know as well. They both played on the Nike circuit, but I know those two guys well.

This week, J.P. Tokoto announced that he was going pro. Does this factor into your decision and what were you thinking about the small forward spot even before this was announced?
Well even if Tokoto had stayed I feel that I could find my way to get on the floor. Tokoto definitely opened some things up being at the small forward spot and the position I would play at UNC. It’s something I looked at and I wish him the best for his future.

UNC has a lot of returning players and could make a run at the championship next year. Has this been a selling point from the coaching staff?
Yeah, absolutely. UNC definitely has the pieces with everybody coming back next year. I think they lost in the Sweet 16 to Wisconsin so they are definitely coming back better, stronger for next year. The people are more experienced, so that’s something I could walk into. To have people to lead me, mentor me, and give me some more experience since I haven’t played in that experience like they have.

Have there been any one and done conversations or is it just based on how you develop?
Yeah, as I develop. Roy doesn’t really talk to me about if I want to be one or done or whatever. He’s good with whatever I want to do.

There has been some talk about a California package with some combination of Ivan Rabb, Caleb Swanigan, and yourself. Have you talked to them about that at all?
I don’t think it will happen. It sounds nice, but everyone has to make their own decisions. Caleb is down to I think three or four schools. Michigan State is one. You almost have to be selfish at this point and do what’s best for yourself.

    YOU'RE WELCOME YA NERRRRRRD

sounds like the defense was decent yesterday and the offense was pretty meh, obviously part of it due to a ton of starters being out on that side

I think it's hard for me to give a shit about Spring/Preseason type stuff now after about eleventy billion seasons in a row of not living up to the hype, I have finally become the wiser, does that phrase even work like that, who cares, so wise

    scrimmage recap:

    Defense

    by Buck Sanders

    * First, a few depth chart notes. In the base defense M.J. Stewart now starts at corner with Malik Simmons. Junior Gnonkonde is now the starter at RDE, backed up by Dajaun Drennon. At left DE, Jessie Rogers starts, backed up by Mikey Bart. Andre Smith started almost exclusively at MLB for the second team (more about Smith later).

    * It should be noted that there were lots of more sub packages on the field defensively today than at any other scrimmage.

    * In the nickel defense, either Brian Walker or Des Lawrence come in and play corner (and they both did today at times), with Malik Simmons shifting into the slot position. Today, however, there was a “Big Nickel” package on display at times, with Donnie Miles coming in as the nickel defender, giving the Tar Heels, in effect, three safeties and two corners on the field. Dan Mastromatteo played at times with the first team in short yardage and goal line packages.

    * I thought that as the scrimmage wore on, the defense wore out some. They are down three defensive tackles (Nazair Jones, Tyler Powell, and Justin Thomason) and it was telling. It was a warm day and though the defense played hard, they played less well toward the end of the scrimmage.

    * Still, there were some great individual plays during the scrimmage, for example:

    - Several balls batted down by Mikey Bart and Jeremiah Clarke

    - Brian Walker knocking the ball away from Juval Molette on a well-thrown ball, and stoning Thomas Jackson on an attempted jet sweep

    - J.K. Britt making a play on the ball against Austin Proehl in the end zone

    - A great play by M.J. Stewart on Damien Washington, preventing a reception

    - Dom Green making a great play to prevent a reception to Josh Cabrera

    - T.J. Jiles hammering Ty’Son Williams on an attempted outside run.

    - Malik Simmons making a great play on the ball against Bug Howard

    - Sam Smiley making a play to prevent a reception to Austin Proehl

    - Andre Smith would have had at least one sack

    * Speaking of Smith, unless I miss my guess, I think he is going to be a stud MLB for UNC – and play this year.

    * The defensive staff on the sidelines – John Papuchis, Tray Scott, Charlton Warren, plus grad assistants – including Ryan Sims, where tough on their charges. On one particular play (which tells you what I know) I thought Junior Gnonkonde made a particularly good play, getting the tackle on a run, which gave up about three yards. As I am making that note, I hear Tray Scott and Ryan Sims yelling to Gnonkonde, “Clean it up, Junior, clean it up!”

    * Not to say they didn’t praise players at times, but they are quick to point out mistakes – every single time.

    * Greg is going to give you the offensive rundown, and to be fair the offense was without their entire starting wide receiver group plus their starting quarterback. Not every wide receiver ran every pattern precisely, not every pass was on the money, but I thought the secondary made far more plays on the ball than I have seen in any scrimmage in the past three years.

    Offense

    By Greg Barnes

    * John Ferranto worked with the ones at right tackle for the first half of the scrimmage while Jon Heck worked with the twos. They switched midway through the afternoon. Fedora told us after the game that Ferranto earned the opportunity with his play in practice over the last week.

    * Marquise Williams was set up behind the offense – alongside Fedora – with a clipboard in hand. As he’s done all spring long, he wrote down pre-snap reads and post-snap decisions as part of his mental prep.

    * As Buck mentioned, the defense clearly wore down as the scrimmage plays added up, but early in the day, the defense outplayed the offense. As the scrimmage reached its midway point, you could see the defensive linemen putting their hands on their hips after just about every play. Only then did the offense start having consistent success.

Part of it was likely due to the various injuries on the offensive side of the ball – Williams, Quinshad Davis, Mack Hollins, Ryan Switzer were all out and T.J. Logan was donning an orange jersey – but there were plenty of mistakes that could have been avoided. Dalton Stogner, Bug Howard and Charles Brunson were just a handful of the players that dropped passes. Mitch Trubisky just missed on a couple of deep throws that would have resulted in big plays and/or touchdowns.

    * After a quick 3-and-out by the twos on their first possession, OL coach Chris Kapilovic could be heard saying, “That’s embarrassing!” as the players walked off the field. A little bit later, Kap told his OL: “You look like you’re in slow motion!”

    * Brewer dressed down a veteran wide receiver early in the scrimmage for not paying attention on the sideline and not helping younger players to understand play calls going in.

    * The first big play of the scrimmage was a 30-yard pass play from Caleb Henderson to walk-on slot receiver Thomas Jackson.

    * Speaking of Henderson, I continue to be impressed with his athleticism. I’ve heard plenty about his arm, but his smoothness/quickness on roll-outs and pull reads were solid today. On a 3rd-and-10 from his own 2-yard-line, Henderson showed some patience in the pocket before darting up the middle for a first down.

    * Anthony Ratliff-Williams has a lot of potential and made some solid passes and some good decisions, but he’s got some work to do on tightening up his mechanics. Plenty of pluses and minuses for the January enrollee today.

    * The most impressive freshman was undoubtedly Ty’Son Williams. The early enrollee is not afraid to create contact and one of his first runs consisted of him gaining five yards after contact. Physical runner with good speed and lateral quickness. He primarily took reps with the twos, but also subbed in with the ones for a couple of series. I believe Williams scored the first TD of the day with a 10-yard run that including some moving-the-pile work.

    * During one series in which the first team was backed up on its own 2, Hood ran up the middle for a 6-yard gain. WR coach Gunter Brewer wasn’t pleased with Howard’s blocking effort on the play: “What was that, Bug? Run in there and fall on your butt?” Brewer told another receiver, “Don’t stop your feet, run through him!”

Howard clearly is talker. After a solid block to set up Proehl’s 21-yard touchdown off a screen pass, Howard bounced to the sideline yelling at Proehl, “You’re welcome! You’re welcome.” Later, when Trubisky’s 40-yard pass to the end zone seemed to graze Howard’s fingertips before hitting the ground, a teammate yelled at Howard, saying, “Dang Bug, you 5-2?”

    * When the offense was backed up at its 2, defensive tackle Ian Dibble entered the game as a fullback in front of Hood.

    * After the ones and twos both delivered 3-and-outs from their own 2, Fedora reset it and had both run through the same situation again. The ones finally got a victory on the back of Hood by extending the drive out past the 30-yard line.

    * A good indication of the offensive struggles came on the sideline after a poor drive. Kap walked down the chalk encouraging the entire offense with phrases like, “Let’s get it going.”

    * After a late fumble – there were a number on the day – one player on the sideline summed up the concern in saying, “We’ve got to take care of these balls, baby, or we’re going to be hurting.”

    * Corbin Daly is going to be a weapon at punter for UNC. First kick went 45 yards despite a poor snap and his next punt was a 60-yarder that drove the return man back some 15 yards to field the kick. He also showed placement skills with a 40-yard sky punt toward the right sideline.

    * There was some good humor following a Joey Mangili directional punt that traveled 37 yards before bouncing out of bounds. John Papuchis made a point to yell out Mangili’s name to get his attention and then proceeded to clap and tell him, “Good placement!” Mangili then walks to the sideline and tells a teammate with a laugh: “I missed it.” His teammate said, “Good miss.”

    * While Fedora has made it clear nothing has been decided yet at PK, Will O’Briant took the snaps with the ones and Nick Weiler took snaps with the twos with Freeman Jones working in. All three made field goals on the afternoon.

    * Not sure which staff member to attribute this quote to, but I thought it was amusing: “Hurry off! You can be hurt later!”

    * We noted this in an earlier practice report, but Kedrick Davis took the opening kickoff with Romar Morris by his side. Devin Perry and Brian Walker took KOR reps with the twos. Perry returned one kick 40 yards, but it was called back due to a penalty. T.J. Jiles turned in the longest run of the day with a return to the 50-yard line. Austin Proehl assumed first-team punt return duties with Switzer out.

    * After Jeff Schoettmer dropped Romar Morris for a 5-yard loss to bring up 3rd-and-12, Trubisky threw for a first down and then ran for 15 yards to set up another Williams TD from two yards out.

    * Another freshman with a ton of potential is wide receiver Juval Mollette. Big, physical kid who made one early catch in traffic and then proceeded to drag defenders several yards. He also made a number of mistakes, which is to be expected from a kid that could still be in high school. After one play down near the goal line, Brewer told him, “I don’t know what that was, but it wasn’t a route.”

A later play showed the problems that can arise by making mistakes. As the offense set up, Brewer could be heard yelling, “Trouble! trouble!” in Mollette’s direction. Once Ratliff-Williams received the snap, he threw a quick screen to Jackson in the flat, where Walker was waiting and absolutely blew him up. Undoubtedly the hardest hit of the day. A few players on the sideline yelled at Mollette that it was his responsibility to block Walker up, and when the freshman came to the sideline, Stogner grabbed him and talked him through the situation.

    * The scrimmage closed with a two-minute drill and the offense starting at its own 35. Trubisky methodically led the ones down the field, connecting with Brandon Fritts for a 20-yard gain down to the goal line. Fritts tried to jump in but was stopped short. Hood finished the drive with TD run from one yard out. The twos had no such luck with four plays and only a couple of yards to their credit.

    * We saw a number of two-back sets with either Morris motioning out to the slot or both backs setting up beside the QB in the shotgun.

    * After one play in which various penalties occurred, the PA announcer said, “There is a plethora of flags on the field.” The crowd laughed.

    * R.J. Prince has been moved back to the offensive line.

    * A source told IC that quarterback Kanler Coker is seeking a medical hardship waiver. We’ll share more details as they come in. Coker was not dressed out on Saturday.
