yeah this weekend doesnt matter but getting beat by western will expedite things. that will mean he is gone before the state game and i can actually root for us to win against them instead of pulling for a blowout

Nnaji's father's quoted in the weekly scoop as saying the FBI investigation's given them pause about perceived leaders Zona/KU, combine that with him apparently being enamored about playing at a blue blood and this sudden surge in his recruitment towards UNC all makes sense

My reflex to that is a strong no, but I see the positives with a proper staff in place. HCIW I'm not so sure about. Sounds nice on paper, but I doubt anyone worth a shit would wait around for UNC, although maybe a guy like Satterfield would be willing to. The biggest thing to take away from all of this is basically every scenario seems to give me some kind of hope, the times are desperate indeed.

thought it sounded really dumb earlier this year but i am coming around on it. we need something to right the ship and excite the fanbase and i think that would do it. the coordinators would be the issue (doubt satterfield wants to wait 3 years but maybe he wants the job that bad).

same argument for a butch reunion. talent is there for next year but we have to get our heads above water immediately in recruiting or it is going to be a disaster for years no matter who we hire and i think a guy like mack could do that

more a ceo type to fix things. here is the article that our site owner did discussing it. i bolded what i think is the key point here for better or worse

In the context of discussing potential replacements for Larry Fedora, and again, as yet our information is that no firm decision has been made on that issue, someone suggested discussing the potential of Mack Brown as a hire. Thought-provoking, to say the least.

First, would such a move be viable? As in, would Mack Brown be interested in returning to UNC? There are some indications that yes, he just might. Sources close to the program say that Brown has spent more time at North Carolina in recent months than he has in years. There was a Blue Zone party for Brown following his selection for the College Football Hall of Fame. He attended some practices. He participated, for the first time, in the Roy Williams Charity Golf tournament. That doesn’t mean he would throw his hat into a ring, if a ring existed, at UNC. But it is interesting that he has recently been more of a presence than usual.

And what does Mack Brown say when asked if he would coach again?

    https://hornsillustrated.com/qa-with-longhorn-legend-mack-brown/

This interview took place this past August.

“People say, ‘Well, are you ever going to coach again?’ or ‘Will you say you’re not going to coach again?’ and I say, ‘[Former NFL coach] Dick Vermeil waited 17 years, then came back and won a Super Bowl.’ So it would be wrong of me, not knowing that I won’t coach again, to say I won’t coach again. I’ve got the energy — in fact, I’m rested, and I’ve seen more football in the last four years than I did when I quit.

“I’ve always been honest with ESPN. So many coaches go there for a year and leave to go back into coaching. That’s what ESPN expects and I didn’t want to be that guy who just took a job. I’m going into the last year of my contract — I had a three-year contract, then they extended it two more years — but ESPN has always said that if I found a coaching job I wanted, they’d let me out of my contract.”

And about North Carolina, where the Browns have a mountain home?

“But we’re also fortunate that when we go to our house in the mountains of North Carolina, we’re North Carolinians — it’s the lake, trout fishing and our friends in North Carolina, and that’s who we are when we’re there.
“We have two wonderful places to live. In fact, Sally said, ‘We love Chapel Hill so much that when we left Chapel Hill, we didn’t leave … we just moved to Austin.’ In fact, North Carolina is having a celebration in August for the Hall of Fame selection like we had here at Texas — with the players and coaches coming back.”

Another factor: With UNC staring a huge hole in the budget with the buyout of Fedora, Brown would no doubt move the needle with big UNC donors. In addition, among long-time UNC fans, there is palpable nostalgia for the Brown era in Chapel Hill. Brown is a consummate salesman, and a Brown hire is one of the few hires that might help to put fan fannies in those pretty new blue seats immediately.

Brown could also jump start recruiting at UNC. As noted, he is a salesman, and there are few better at it than he is. Though he’s been out of coaching since 2013, kids today are likely to be familiar with his face and name through his ESPN presence. I also would think that Brown would keep any UNC assistants he feels are critical to recruiting. As he is, for all practical purposes, unemployed, Brown would be immediately available. He has said that ESPN would let him out of his contract if he took another coaching job.

But for the Brown-to-UNC scenario to work, it would also likely involve a potential successor-in-waiting plan. At 67, Brown might have three-to-five (good) years to coach. A succession plan in place would be optimal, if not immediately, sooner rather than later.

Has it been done before? John Robinson’s return to USC in 1993 perhaps comes closest. He left the Trojans in 1982 for the LA Rams and was out of college coaching for 11 seasons. Bill Snyder of Kansas State also fits somewhat into this concept. He was only absent from that school for three years. Brown has been out of coaching for five years.

How would a Brown return play out on the field? Historically, Brown has not been wedded to any particular style of offense or defense. He is not known as necessarily a chalkboard, X’s and O’s, type of coach. At UNC, he employed an option attack for a few years when he lacked an adequate “Pro-style” type of quarterback. Vince Young, at Texas, ran a zone-read spread offense, and Brown rode it to a national title.

After spending several years at ESPN and surveying the college football landscape, while not being committed to any particular style of play, Brown could potentially be in a great position to field a team that utilizes schemes that fit its personnel - that’s the best-case scenario. It could, of course, go the other way, with Brown being out of the coaching game so long that he’ll be stale and rusty at the helm.

It is an intriguing idea, but one that is sheer speculation at this point.

Seems like a disaster to hire a 70 year old who has been out of football for 5 years that even this class of krewts already know won’t still be their coach for SR day. What does it give you?

Butts in seats is laughable. It’s not like a bunch of people went to the games when he was there in the 90s. As a youngn, my dad and I used to easily and cheaply get great seats day of, even for games like Clemson and UVA where there was a rivalry vibe and the other school brought fans.

Why not just jump in with both feet on Satterfield?

I think he'd have more sway in the NC recruiting game than you're giving him credit for, but this is still all just hearsay anyway. As far as Satterfield goes, I'd be perfectly happy with that hire. Honestly we're just at the phase where almost anything sounds nice compared to what we have.

those are valid concerns but he is "only" 67. younger than saban and younger than roy. i think the age thing is overblown. it all comes down to the coordinators to make this plan work

i dont think people realize how close this program is to turning into a kansas or rutgers. recruiting (specifically in state which is obviously crucial) is hemorrhaging. we need a stabilizing force to just get our heads above water and mack is a salesman who can repair that damage that larry has inflicted with nc high school staffs.

satterfield is my top choice for sure but we really can't mess this hire up at all and for as good as satterfield is, there is some risk there. mack would at least stop us from taking on water. its a really bad situation that larry has put us in and i wouldnt blame our AD for going safe with mack

I guess I am out of touch with today’s NC teen and UNC has been bad for a long time, but I figure it won’t take much more than a new coach that’s not a scummy meathead (or that is at least somewhat personable) for UNC recruiting to turn around. Kids want to go there.

On the plus side, reading about this Mack Brown idea brought back some fun memories with my dad, so I called him on my drive back from lunch.
