My best friend's cousin is neighbor to a heavy hitter in the Ram' s Club. He said it's not a sure thing, but they feel pretty good about the deal they can offer Jon Gruden which might be enough to at least consider our offer. This is all preliminary and nothing would really be set in motion until after the midway point of the season, but the money appears to be there.
he still likely ends up at duke but the moore stuff at the beginning and ending is pretty interesting WEEKLY SCOOP Spoiler Fall Evaluation Period On Sunday, college coaches can travel the country to watch and visit with prospects. It’s the beginning of the fall evaluation period which lasts through the start of the fall signing period in November. The North Carolina staff has traditionally used this period as a grab-bag of sorts. Roy Williams has honed in on offered players and secured in-home visits in the past. There was the 12:01 a.m. meeting with Brandon Ingram and his family in Kinston, an in-home with Kennedy Meeks with 20-30 family members present, and a stealth visit to Texas that yielded an offer for Will Baker. All the attention doesn’t go to the senior class, though. Three years ago, Steve Robinson watched a tall, lanky sophomore point guard from Concord (N.C.) High School during an open gym session. Four months later, UNC freshman Rechon “Leaky” Black was a UNC commitment. Two years ago, former ECU coach Jeff Lebo took a trip to Orlando (Fla.) Christian Prep. He watched Nassir Little for the first time, took the evaluation back to Robinson and Williams, which ultimately led to UNC’s highest-rated signee since Harrison Barnes. I share these anecdotes to say the fall eval period, while not as glamorized as the spring, is vital. This year, we’ve already confirmed trips (dates to come) for Williams to Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy (Armando Bacot, Josh Green, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Jaden Springer), as well as Winterville (N.C.) South Central (Day’Ron Sharpe). Sharpe told Inside Carolina he plans to attend “Late Night with Roy” in the Smith Center on Oct. 12. In addition, count on Williams making evaluation trips/in-home visits with 2019 targets Cole Anthony, Vernon Carey, Matt Hurt, Keion Brooks, and Wendell Moore. Other visits will undoubtedly be scheduled, but those are near locks. For clarification’s sake, a readers have asked how the visits to IMG count from an NCAA evaluation tally, as far as individual players. One visit to the school – say Williams is specifically there to see Bacot and has no interactions with Green, Robinson-Earl or Springer – counts as a visit to each of the players. Two years ago, when Williams was searching for big men help in the class of 2016, he met Isaiah Stokes (who eventually signed with Florida) at IMG Academy for a visit. That same day, he flew to Stokes’s parents’ home and conducted an in-home visit. The visits counted as two, off-campus visits with Stokes. That’s important to note because we fully expect Williams to do in-home visits with some parents of players who are at prep schools. For example, we already know Williams expects to have an in-home visit with Robinson-Earl’s mother in Kansas at some point. We wouldn’t be surprised if the same is true for Anthony, Bacot, and Green. Speaking of Green, on Tuesday Bryan Antoine committed to Villanova. It was a little surprising as much of the industry buzz regarding Antoine centered on Duke for many months. Green’s top six list consisted of Villanova, UNC, Arizona, Kansas, USC, and UNLV. We saw his true list (“list within a list") being Villanova, UNC, Arizona, and Kansas in a previous Weekly Scoop. With Antoine’s commitment, and the Wildcats continued chase of Nico Mannion and Isaiah Stewart, it’s fair to wonder if Villanova might be out for Green. Furthermore, we haven’t heard much chatter about Green and Kansas. Thus this could be shaping up as an Arizona vs. UNC battle. And it’s also worth considering the potential ramifications with Robinson-Earl, who is Green's friend and teammate, with a very similar school list. Don’t be surprised if Robinson-Earl and Green take their official visit to UNC together. Getting to Know Boogie The offer to 2019 guard Boogie Ellis was a surprise. It wasn’t a surprise that UNC was recruiting him, we’d heard rumblings earlier in the week and knew that UNC saw him play very well in July, but the surprise was that UNC offered him so quickly. It was clearly a quick response to the sudden decision by Tre Mann, who one day was a very viable Tar Heel target with an official visit scheduled, and the next day was off the board after succumbing to the local efforts to keep him with the nearby Gators. The times Williams has offered in such a condensed schedule (first contact and offer in the same week) are few and far between. Ellis is scheduled to speak with Williams again, presumably about either a Williams visit to San Diego or an Ellis visit to Chapel Hill. We’ll see exactly how strong the UNC draw is, considering Ellis was deep into his recruitment with a final list and the full slate of visits set. This isn’t to say it will end the same way, but the suddenness of the recruitment and offer reminds me of UNC’s short courtship of UCLA forward Kris Wilkes two summers ago. Few scouts have seen Ellis as much as 247 Sports National Recruiting Analyst Josh Gershon. In the latest 247 Sports rankings, Ellis is the No. 25 overall player in the senior class. That’s a jump of more than 60 spots since the last rankings release. “We've long ranked Ellis in the Top 100 but the main question with him was whether or not he would become a consistent shooter,” explained Gershon. "At the point where his jumper and confidence went to the next level, it was clear his stock had made a serious jump. When you see players consistently improve the way Ellis has and add to their skill set in similar fashions, they're easy guys to bet on. “He has good size and length, can contribute as a scorer or facilitator, has strong ball skills, and is a plus athlete with the physical tools to be a very good defender. His combination of athleticism and skill make him one of the top guard prospects in the 2019 class.” USC, San Diego State, and Arizona have been the presumed favorites for Ellis – an up-and-coming team with a strong 2019 recruiting class (USC), the hometown school (SDSU), and a nationally-relevant team (Arizona). “I’m sure the North Carolina offer will open his eyes and be something he seriously considers,” Gershon said. “Of course, there will be some ground to make up from a relationship standpoint. But, the North Carolina brand speaks for itself and will make almost any kid seriously consider it.” Fall Schedule Sept. 9 - Fall Recruiting Period Begins Sept. 21 – Jeremiah Robinson-Earl Official Visit Sept. 25 - Practice Begins *Oct. 12 - Late Night with Roy Oct. 12 - Wendell Moore Official Visit Nov. 2 – Vernon Carey Official Visit Nov. 2 – Keion Brooks Official Visit Nov. 6 - Season Opener at Wofford Nov. 11 - Fall Recruiting Period Ends Nov. 14 - Early Signing Period Begins * not confirmed by UNC. More Info • UNC commitment Armando Bacot has not yet scheduled his official visit to Chapel Hill, he told Inside Carolina. Already known as a recruiter, I wouldn’t be surprised if UNC and Bacot are discussing a visit date that will provide maximum impact towards their recruiting efforts. • North Carolina’s other 2019 Jeremiah Francis is on the mend. It’s been six weeks since underwent micro fracture surgery. He’ll return to Chapel Hill, the site of the surgery, this weekend to get clearance to begin walking again. • Despite the (very logical) expectation that he ultimately ends up at childhood favorite Duke, Wendell Moore is not giving any such indication to those close to him. A source told Inside Carolina that he has no idea what school leads for the senior wing. “People say Duke leads all the time, but he’s never said anything about it, really.” Moore, as we reported a few weeks back, dropped South Carolina and will take official visits to the four in-state ACC schools – Wake Forest, N.C. State, Duke, and UNC. We’ve also heard that the UNC staff has been in contact with the Moore camp each of the last couple weeks. • It’s still very quiet when it comes to the class of 2020 – again underscoring the importance UNC is putting on the 2019 class. We’ve tried – in vain – multiple times to get in contact with junior guard Anthony Edwards. We spoke with his camp several times, and they confirmed North Carolina’s interest, as well as a conversation with Roy Williams. Edwards could very well have a UNC offer, but we haven’t been able to sufficiently confirm it. • Another junior guard North Carolina watched a fair amount over the summer was two-sport star Jalen Suggs from Minnesota. He told Inside Carolina he hasn’t heard from UNC in “a little bit” but that he “likes the message” they are sending him. “They just said how much they like my game, and they want me to come down and visit soon. They said they like how I can control a team and make my teammates better.” Suggs hopes to travel to North Carolina in the fall, and visit Duke and UNC.
Kind of believe him tbh We've reached the phase where he's continuously embarrassing himself in the public eye, although this is obviously much smaller in scope, but that's a good sign imo
everyone should listen to the doherty interview on the carolina insider podcast. i am only on part 1 where they discuss mainly his playing career and what got him to unc from ND as a coach. it’s interesting and got some great stories. you can definitely see why he recruited so well. looking forward to part 2 where he gets into his time as coach. fact i didn’t know: he was the color commentator for the 2005 santa clara game which is insanely awkward to consider
part 2 of this doh interview is fascinating and i can’t recommend it enough. the backstabbing from dean and baddour and the internal politics are fascinating. he really opens up about his time coaching at us i wish we could get an oral history book on that time period bc it’s so damn intriguing
Guy has had 14 years to prepare his defense for why he was a shitty coach at UNC and your’e falling all over it. Come on man. Doh was a loser and will always be a loser.
i mean yeah he definitely was a loser. he even admits he fucked up. he took emeka okafor and caron butler. still was interesting to hear him explain all the fuck ups he made
opened at 13.5. either we get a win which always makes me happy or we lose and larry is fired on the bus. gonna be a good day
I listened to the preview podcast yesterday because I'm a weak individual, last year ECU gave up more ypp than NCAA leading Oklahoma averaged for the season, essentially every team they played became the best offense in the country in that regard
got a waiver to let Brain Anderson play today due to lack of numbers at C, this whole suspension shuffling deal makes me chuckle
I realize everyone already made this comparison, but the way his legs churn really does remind me of Elijah
typical fedora coached team 3rd and 22 and the qb is throwing it away and we rough the qb. it’s a pattern on teams coaches by this retard
we have led the acc in penalties 6 of the last 7 years. that alone should be evidence enough of how fucking awful our coach is
