I've watched this a bunch the last week or so, and it's finally dawned on me that Coby's game as a score first point really isn't all that different from what Marcus or Joel brought, who I never questioned in their incoming lead roles. Think the only difference is just that, in my head, I've had Coby pegged mostly as a 2 since his commitment, despite the fact that he's been lead guard for his aau/hs teams the last year or so. I'm sure there'll be a learning curve, but honestly we've never had a guy like Coby running the show. Long story short, all hail Crab Man I also think Nassir has the highest ceiling of anybody Roy's brought in, but that's a story for another time. Now back to our regularly scheduled 32'n
I dunno about being better, but I'm not worried about the potential of next year's team. My 3 years comment wasn't implying that we'll be going anywhere, just saying it's the end of an era. Thread title looks naked now
No one will replace what Theo can do as a point forward, Nassir Little is an instant impact 3 though. Coby White will likely be given the reigns at point, and obviously Seventh has to get his mind right.
thought this was interesting ej montgomery is good and i guess roy know what he is doing but i would much rather go all in on hagans or a grad transfer pg bc point is a much bigger worry than post next year imo and i know he is saying coby is a pg but i just don't see it
shame his career never really got off the ground, but he seems pretty content going after that mba so good for him
rob's report: Spoiler Nassir Little: As much as any other player on the day for either team, Nassir Little showcased power, athleticism and skill. “He’s not like their (UNC’s) usual guys at this event,” one NBA scout told me, indicating that former Tar Heels at the game have been more finesse and willing to blend in. Little, on the other hand, is hardly bashful. He seeks scoring opportunities as a shooter, driver and transition finisher, and he’s successful at all ranges. His jump shot actually was inconsistent today, but he did nail a few threes. He also impressed in one-on-one transition drills, pulling up for short, but contested 12-footers. His mechanics appear to be pretty good, although his shot is a touch stiff and could use a little refinement. But his release and arch are on point, and he certainly possesses three-point range. Meanwhile, on the move he puts his head down and likely will draw a lot of fouls for the Heels. He isn’t a *great* dribbler but certainly is fine for a jumbo wing, and he can attack right or left. And as a finisher, few can compare. Importantly, he’s explosive from a standing position, meaning the types of plays that happen in games. He doesn’t need to time his steps and excels going off two feet. He has long arms and elevates effortlessly for power dunks in traffic. He didn’t look to post up today — he’s playing exclusively on the wing — but has the tool in his kit. Perhaps his most impressive play was a leaping, left-handed offensive rebound that he then finished with a slam. Little does take some plays off from time to time, and that tendency is something he’ll have to eliminate if he’s going to play the 30 minutes per game I believe he could next season. Though he’ll be a freshman and inevitably prone to mistakes, his length and strength should enable him to become a solid long-term defender as well, albeit likely that won’t occur until he’s already in the pros. All in all, and not surprisingly, he ranked among the most impressive guys on the day. Coby White drives past Zion Williamson at McDonald's All-American Game practice. (Photo: McDonald's) Coby White: Though he’ll never be the imposing physical talent Little is, White also enjoyed a lot of success in his practice. The caveat is that the East team did less competitive work in their practice, so there just wasn’t as much to see. Still, White caught fire from the perimeter. He buried multiple jump shots in a row, at one point drawing groans and curses from the opposing squad. He certainly is a rhythm scorer and when he’s on, he can knock down shots even without a clean look, with his feet set, etc. He sometimes will not follow through at all on those shots, but that just means he’s feeling it. Of course, he’s prone to missing some shots badly that way, but such is life for a volume scorer. I’d love to add thoughts here about what today indicated about his immediate future as potential (or likely?) starting point guard next season. But it’s difficult to offer much, because he’s on the same team with Immanuel Quickley and Darius Garland, who are the point guards. Thus, he’s exclusively on the wing. He had some tough defensive assignments but battled. He guarded Zion Williamson in a few drills and more frequently guarded R.J. Barrett, players who have several inches of height/length on him. I thought it was interesting that he did his damage almost entirely from the wing (but did have one nice drive), and I think that’s foreshadowing how he’ll need to tailor his game for college. Because he relies on stop and go and deception, finishing in traffic may be difficult until he figures out the shotblockers. But it’s encouraging that he already seems to understand that and plays accordingly. He did more shooting than passing on day one, but he was feeling it and in one competitive 5-on-5 period he was the only guy making it happen for his side offensively. Can’t fault him for being shot-first in that scenario. Overall, I think Roy Williams absolutely will love him from day one. There’s a reason he has talked up White far more than he does the typical signee. White is a very focused young competitor and accepts coaching. Whatever adjustments he needs to make, he’ll most definitely try to make them and quickly. I can see where playing on the ball may stunt his growth in terms of refining his shot selection and learning to play with big men, but he possesses an innate feel for the game that I’m hesitant to apply much of a ceiling to next season’s projection.
sherrell saying he doesnt think nas is 100% wanting to be a one and done and lord at the 2020 team if he comes back with coby
just realized that theo and joel will be playing in the 3-on-3 tourney this weekend so looking forward to seeing them together one more time
just realized we're forgoing the spring game for an extra practice, doubt too many people will mind this year
Nassir doing work in the McDonalds game. Approaching MVP territory for the game. Wish we would have stuck around McCormack as well. He looks like he will be a monster for Kansas.
A 3pt jumper. A pick and roll dunk. Stepback jumper. And then locked up Zion two times in a row, picking his pocket on one occasion. All in the matter of a few minutes. Nassir putting on a show right now.
tbh i dont think it is particularly close. harrison is the only one remotely close but i think nas is much more athletic and refined as a prospect
Yeah...Little is a legit stud. Reminds me of Andrew Wiggins but with a stronger and more badass competitive fire.
Barnes was more polished coming in, but yeah the explosiveness and tenacity that Nas plays with eventually puts him on another level, also has quicker feet
damn, I guess Joel and Theo already bowed out of this 3v3 thing, was looking forward to watching them :/
also some mystery 2018 recruit is saving an official visit for us really hope it’s hagans. i don’t think ej is a duke lock like everyone else but i am more than comfortable with our post guys next year and not remotely comfortable with our pg situation
