No argument here. I've changed my mind a lot on the religious question, but that sort of shit is absurd-- as are huge real estate Ponzi schemes.

That headline takes some liberties. Not that she didn't support that at some point, but the ad she signed didn't say anything remotely close to that.

She signed an add that said “We, the following citizens of Michigana, oppose abortion on demand and defend the right to life from fertilization to natural death. Please continue to pray to end abortion”

What’s the nuance that I’m missing?

The "abortion providers should be prosecuted" portion. One can believe it's life at fertilization but understand that abortion to a point is currently legal and providers aren't subject to prosecution. Hell, one could even believe that abortion is morally wrong but not want to criminalize the procedure for providers or the women.

Sorry, I’m irritated that people keep defending this but the prosecuting providers is in her quotes in the article where she said “we support the prosecution of doctors who perform abortions”

So maybe it’s not in the “advertisement” but it’s on the record

Those aren't Barrett's quotes; they're the quotes of the head of the organization. I get that it's problematic to be in any way affiliated with an organization that holds that position, but the fact that it holds that position doesn't necessarily mean that she did (or, for that matter, that she would decide cases that way if it were her personal belief). Thus, the headline taking some liberties with the implication that the ad was making that statement.

Thanks for the clarification - it would appear then, that the headline is accurate and she did sign an add for an org who’s leadership supports prosecuting doctors that perform abortions.

I’m not an ACB defender. I was just answering your question.

I think you can fairly show she likely holds some pretty abhorrent views while still remaining factual.

They're not going to overturn Roe v. Wade. This line of attack is such a waste of time when there's so much other shit wrong with the nomination.

She's a devout Catholic. We knew from jump that she personally was anti-abortion. That's provable without going back to a 2006 ad.

i find this assuredness soft, especially as we've seen the ever quickening expansion of abortion restrictions across the country

and in the face of a joke court case getting laundered all the way to the supreme court to kill the ACA

like trump and other conservative leaders openly state that overturning roe is the litmus test for these judges

i get the chess people think they're playing by keeping the evangelicals on board, but at some point much like the entire conservative movement you end up with people who drank the kool aid and don't understand those early dynamics of power.

i think if they over turn roe the court will basically cease to exist.

the republicans probably already want to start ignoring what these people write and if they overturn roe the democrats could join them

You may be right, but I think the right likes keeping it as a carrot. It's pretty much the only voting issue they win with Catholics. :twocents:

The old timers that get how the game is played don't want it overturned. But now you have this new generation of psychos that have been drinking from the right wing propaganda fire hose their entire lives and don't live in the same reality as the rest of us. All those dumb dumbs are gonna overturn it without a second thought.

This requires Dems finding a spine and correctly neutering the court, which I don't exactly have a lot of confidence in.

again, much like the trump takeover pulled back the veneer that all the 90s talk radio and insane fox news shit wasn't just to win votes, it was the unifying ideology of the party from top to bottom. i think a similar dynamic can play out with the judges. the macro thinkers just aren't around anymore.
i also mostly agree with this, we're already seeing trump doing this at different levels most notably with the census. i mostly think barring some serious reform measures in the short term the court is on a dead end path.

While a wholesale reversal of the precedent of Roe v. Wade *may* not happen, it is very clear and potentially more dangerous that the Supreme Court would continue to chip away at states’ abilities to provide access to safe and affordable abortion care, which will ultimately harm more Americans.

Saying the “precedent is safe“ is about like saying the tweet above is factually accurate. It’s accurate, but it’s deceiving as all hell.

Roberts is the only conservative on that court who plays the long game. Can't keep gutting voting restrictions and ensure minority control of the government if you nuke the power of the court on something he deems irrelevant like abortion or the ACA.

It's going to be wild to see what Republican governors and state controlled legislatures do even if Biden wins and he has the Senate. It seems like we'd very quickly reach a point where they will have to decide what they want to do to enforce the law.

next to the trump takeover the most illuminating thing of the last 5-10 years has been republican state governments operating as if democrats winning elections is irrelevant and they don't get power. stripping Evers of power the second he won in WI. stripping Cooper of power in NC (NCGOP also just being low key the craziest most undemocratic political group in the country too). court packing in multiple states, on and on.

the herrenvolk dynamic in american politics is something you can't put back in a cage if it gets out too far and why the democratic reforms (especially if the SC starts throwing out some of them, like the voting security bill) need to be day 1 priorities if Biden gets a trifecta. last time we failed it took a century to try to turn it back around.

That's fair. I could see Gorsuch writing a majority opinion on a 5-4 abortion case not overturning Roe but weakening it. But, I think that even a majority liberal court expanding Roe wouldn't keep Republican-dominated state governments from restricting access anyway. To them, there's political value in chasing the windmill.

frankly if now is the real actual scotus crisis then Dems have themselves to blame for running the scotus crisis playbook for decades to drum up support for their shitty candidates and platforms

given how willing republicans are to circumvent the law or in the specific case of abortion to use whatever means available to make them inaccessible, I have a hard time rousing myself for a do or die scotus fight.

Depends on how many apply? Percentage accepted for a really small expensive school isn't an apples to apples comparison with an elite but public university.
